Powys football club fundraiser in memory of Andy McVeagh

Llanfair United Football Club have raised £3,600 for the British Heart Foundation.
The money was raised from the Andy McVeagh Memorial Cup match between the Llanfair United veterans and Llanfair United Reserve side last May Bank Holiday.
The day was a resounding success as past team-mates of the much-missed club legend paid their respects in a most fitting fashion by lacing up their boots with many coming out of retirement for the afternoon.
It was also a successful community event as townspeople descended on Mount Field for the annual charity match and a chance to honour one of the town's sons who passed away in 2021 aged 56.
McVeagh was a former player, coach, and supporter of Llanfair United, and his commitment to the club was widely recognised.

Former rugby player to take on world-record swim with Scottish Canals

The 48-year-old aims to tackle and overcome the full 60 miles of the Canal, including 29 locks, starting on September 15 and completing the challenge within 10 days. He is raising awareness for three charities that hold a personal significance to him: Crohn's & Colitis UK, British Heart Foundation, and mental health charity Mikeysline. Sinclair said: 'After some research, I discovered no-one had ever swum the full length of the Caledonian Canal, from sea to sea across the Highlands of Scotland. 'It's long, cold water, and logistically quite tricky. 'Swimming was always the hardest part of the triathlon for me, heavy rugby player legs and the nickname 'Sinky' says it all, so anything that involved swimming would by default, be a challenge. 'I thought it might be fun to build a small team and create our own wee bit of history, perhaps inspire others and raise money for great causes close to us in the process.' He has faced significant health challenges. Diagnosed with indeterminate colitis, an inflammatory bowel disease, he underwent major life-changing surgery in 2013 to remove his colon and another operation to reverse the stoma and form an internal pouch using his remaining small intestine. Two years later, determined not to be defined by illness, he completed an Ironman triathlon alongside his friend Colin Maguire, raising funds for Crohn's & Colitis UK in the process. In 2024, Maguire died of a sudden heart attack – and Sinclair also lost Jenny Hastings, the wife of his friend and former Watsonians and Edinburgh Rugby teammate Scott Hastings. He is raising money for the British Heart Foundation and Mikeysline in their memory. Claire Maguire, wife to Colin, in support of Sinclair, said: 'It means the world to me and my boys that Iain is taking on this open water challenge in memory of Colin and other special friends. 'Iain's challenge will raise vital funds for the British Heart Foundation, a cause very close to my heart.' Also backing Sinclair is former teammate Scott Hastings, who said: 'It's with huge admiration that Iain is embarking on this amazing challenge in memory of my wife Jenny. 'I am delighted that Iain has chosen the mental health charity, Mikeysline, one of the three benefitting charities of this groundbreaking challenge. 'I look forward to being part of Iain's support team as he takes on this amazing feat.' Sinclair went on: 'I'm genuinely humbled to have the support and input of a hugely experienced and capable core group of people, along with the amazing support from our partners at Scottish Canals. 'From fitness and safety experts to friends, mentors, and family, it's been a shared effort from the start. 'I'm especially grateful for the support of my wife and our three children, the ones I hope to make proud above all. 'We're going to give this everything we've got.'

Friends dress as Beefeaters to cheer on cyclists

Dressed as Beefeaters, a group of friends have made an annual tradition of meeting up to cheer on competitors taking part in the Tour de Curson and Dave Hick from North Yorkshire met through their own cycling 2009 Andy and another friend decided to travel to the South of France to watch a stage of the race and, wanting to represent their home country, chose to dress up as the Tower of London's Yeoman Warders - otherwise known as then the group has expanded to include seven friends and they have even received outfit advice from a real Beefeater, who Dave joked had contacted them to "keep them in check". "I think you've got to be a specific person, we're a unique group," Dave said."I was fortunate enough to join because of Andy. I've never looked back since – it's a phenomenal experience, a great party."Often selecting a gruelling hill-climbing stage, the men form a 'Beefeater Bend' around a corner of the course, to spur competitors have even been known to bust a move or two, famously captured in a 2015 video where they danced along to Links Rechts, a popular song played at Dutch sporting recently, the friends made the trip across the Channel to attend the 16th stage of the Tour de France, on Mont none of the group can claim the official title of beefeater, they have been advised on their outfits by the real deal. One of the warders contacted the group on social media to give some tips on what they had got right and wrong, Dave 2017, the group was invited with family and friends to attend the Ceremony of the Keys in London, and meet some of their real-life counterparts. "It's such a privilege that the Beefeaters are watching our activity while we're out in France, and obviously they like what we do, so it's great," Andy hung their costumes up after this year's event, discussions have already begun about which stage to attend in added that the group was especially excited about the Tour's return to the UK in 2027."The route starts in Edinburgh – that's going to be huge one," he said."If you've not experienced it before, get yourself to that one, anyone who wants to party or who loves cycling, because that's going to be a big one."
