Live updates: Inter Miami-Atlas scoreless as second half of Leagues Cup opener begins

Miami Herald4 days ago
Inter Miami not only got their superstars Lionel Messi and Jordi Alba back in their lineup to open Leagues Cup play on Wednesday night at Chase Stadium.
They also saw the club debut of recently-acquired Argentine star midfielder Rodrigo De Paul.
Messi and De Paul, who have each starred for their home country's national side, were reunited even faster than some expected as Inter Miami took on vs. Liga MX powerhouse Atlas in the first of three opening phase games of this year's Leagues Cup.
Through one half, the sides have dueled to a scoreless draw despite each team putting together multiple promising scoring chances.
De Paul started despite not having taken part in any collective training with his new teammates prior to Wednesday's match, according to coach Javier Mascherano, who said Tuesday he was in 'great shape.'
Messi and Alba returned to Miami's lineup after serving a one-game suspension this past Saturday against FC Cincinnati after not playing in the MLS All-Star Game a week ago.
De Paul showed off his speed in the half, but it was Luis Suarez, who came the closest to finding the mark for Inter Miami.
Suarez, who has not scored in Inter Miami's past 10 matches across all competitions, hit the crossbar just before the final whistle of the first half on a great ball in from Jordi Alba.
Inter Miami was outshot by Atlas, however, 8-6 overall and 3-1 in shots on goal in the first half including a pair of shots that goalkeeper Rocco Rios Novo needed to make brilliant saves to thwart.
Rios Novo started once again for the injured Oscar Ustari.

Lionel Messi has 'minor' muscle injury in right leg, return timeline unclear

Inter Miami announced on Sunday that Lionel Messi is dealing with a "minor" muscle injury in his right leg, a day after the superstar striker left a game with what appeared to be a hamstring injury. After the Leagues Cup win over Necaxa via penalty kicks, head coach Javier Mascherano described Messi's injury as "discomfort" and told reporters that he would undergo further testing Sunday. Inter Miami's update on his status after that testing was light on details and did not offer a projected timeline for Messi's return. "Messi underwent medical tests to evaluate the extent of the muscle discomfort he experienced during last night's Leagues Cup match against Necaxa, which forced him to leave the field," the statement reads. "The results confirmed a minor muscle injury in his right leg. His medical clearance will depend on his clinical progress and response to treatment." That was the extent of the team's update, which did not confirm if the injury was to Messi's hamstring. This story will be updated.

Lionel Messi suffers ‘minor muscle injury' during Miami win over Necaxa in Leagues Cup

Lionel Messi suffered what Inter Miami is calling 'a minor muscle injury in his right leg' during Miami's Leagues Cup penalty shootout win over Necaxa on Saturday. Messi underwent medical exams to determine the extent of the injury, according to a club statement on Sunday. It is unclear how long Messi will be out of action. Messi was substituted in the 11th minute of Miami's second Leagues Cup match after he fell to the ground and clutched his right leg. Miami head coach Javier Mascherano told reporters after the game that Messi had injured his right hamstring, but that he may have avoided a more serious injury after talking to Messi after Miami's penalty shootout win. Advertisement Messi's availability will be evaluated by the club's medical staff. Messi's two assists in game one of the tournament's group phase powered Miami to a last-minute victory over Atlas at Chase Stadium. It goes without saying that despite the recent inclusion of Rodrigo de Paul, Miami's attack will be severely limited without Messi. The superstar Argentine has scored 18 goals and added nine assists after 18 MLS regular-season appearances this year. Messi has been on a tear of late that saw him score two goals in six out of seven matches, including a record five straight games with a brace. Plus, Miami has relied more heavily on Messi this summer, including during the club's recent participation at the Club World Cup. Messi played over 90 minutes in all four of Miami's matches. It should be noted that Messi has a history of hamstring injuries, dating back to his prime years at Barcelona. He has missed a handful of games since joining Miami in 2023 due to a similar diagnosis. Miami will face Pumas on Wednesday in their third and final group stage match. Miami is second in the MLS side of the bracket with five points, just one point behind the Portland Timbers. Miami will need a positive result against Pumas to increase their chances of being one of the four MLS teams that will advance to the second round. The Leagues Cup final will be played on August 31.

Even after a wild trade deadline, Yankees still lack sense of urgency

MIAMI — By all accounts, the New York Yankees were one of the big winners at the MLB trade deadline. They added a third baseman, two utility infielders, a platoon partner for Jasson Domínguez and revamped the bullpen. The excitement in the Bronx this past Thursday was the highest it has been in over two months. Advertisement It all evaporated in Miami. The Yankees were swept for the first time by the surging Miami Marlins, who have just one player making more than $3.5 million on their roster, and he didn't even play (Sandy Alcantara). By comparison, the Yankees have 14 such players on their active roster. Payroll discrepancy isn't everything to measure which teams should and shouldn't be good, but they do provide general expectations for the franchises. The Yankees are all-in and have World Series aspirations. The Marlins hope to somehow sneak into the third Wild Card spot in the National League. But if you watched the three games in Miami, it appeared as if the teams' expectations were reversed. The Yankees were sloppy, again; they made Little League mistakes; and their bats were quieted in the final two games. After getting swept, the Yankees are 4 1/2 games back of the Toronto Blue Jays in the American League East and 1 1/2 games back of the Boston Red Sox for second place. They are just a 1/2 game ahead of the Seattle Mariners for the final Wild Card spot and 1 1/2 games in front of the Texas Rangers, who they start a three-game series with on Monday, from missing the playoffs entirely. 'I wouldn't say there's concern, but I would say I think a little sense of urgency would be good for us,' Yankees catcher/first baseman Ben Rice said. That would be the opposite of how the Yankees usually approach the game. They tend to operate with a laissez-faire attitude that starts with manager Aaron Boone. Since team captain Aaron Judge said they would hit a hot streak, they're 4-6. Since the Yankees lost two of three to the Los Angeles Dodgers on June 1, they are 24-30, a worse record than the Chicago White Sox, Pittsburgh Pirates and the Athletics during this span. 'I think we have the makings of a very good club, but obviously we haven't shown it consistently enough,' manager Aaron Boone said. Advertisement It is still possible the Yankees can turn their season around and make the playoffs with ease. They have 16 games remaining against the White Sox, Washington Nationals and Minnesota Twins. They have the best offense in baseball, with a 117 OPS+. They have an MVP contender in Judge. They have Cody Bellinger, who will be a down-ballot MVP contender. Their bullpen now features numerous high-leverage arms. They should be better than this. 'Since I've been here, I feel like we have a chance to be as good as any team as we've had,' Boone said. 'I really feel like that. That starts with me and helping them get it out, but we got to do it. And, again, I am very confident that we will. But, it has been a long enough stretch of ups and downs, lose a few, win a few. We got to do better than that.' Talk is cheap for the Yankees. The Dodgers spent their offseason poking fun at the Yankees and how sloppy they were defensively, only for New York to regress. They dropped from 10th in outs above average last season to 21st in 2025. They came into spring training taking those comments from the Dodgers personally, but that fire to prove they were better than what they showed in the World Series has gone missing. Yankees general manager Brian Cashman called the post-deadline a sprint until the end of the season. There are 50 games remaining. The Yankees are slipping in the standings. And with them still struggling to find urgency within themselves, it's fair to wonder if it'll be impossible to find. 'I think everyone in this room, we have really high expectations, and we're not meeting them right now,' Bellinger said. (Photo of Luis Gil: Sam Navarro / Imagn Images)
