Live updates: Inter Miami-Atlas scoreless as second half of Leagues Cup opener begins
Inter Miami not only got their superstars Lionel Messi and Jordi Alba back in their lineup to open Leagues Cup play on Wednesday night at Chase Stadium. They also saw the club debut of recently-acquired Argentine star midfielder Rodrigo De Paul. Messi and De Paul, who have each starred for their home country's national side, were reunited even faster than some expected as Inter Miami took on vs. Liga MX powerhouse Atlas in the first of three opening phase games of this year's Leagues Cup. Through one half, the sides have dueled to a scoreless draw despite each team putting together multiple promising scoring chances. De Paul started despite not having taken part in any collective training with his new teammates prior to Wednesday's match, according to coach Javier Mascherano, who said Tuesday he was in 'great shape.' Messi and Alba returned to Miami's lineup after serving a one-game suspension this past Saturday against FC Cincinnati after not playing in the MLS All-Star Game a week ago. De Paul showed off his speed in the half, but it was Luis Suarez, who came the closest to finding the mark for Inter Miami. Suarez, who has not scored in Inter Miami's past 10 matches across all competitions, hit the crossbar just before the final whistle of the first half on a great ball in from Jordi Alba. Inter Miami was outshot by Atlas, however, 8-6 overall and 3-1 in shots on goal in the first half including a pair of shots that goalkeeper Rocco Rios Novo needed to make brilliant saves to thwart. Rios Novo started once again for the injured Oscar Ustari.

Rodrigo De Paul starting in Inter Miami's Leagues Cup opener vs. Atlas
Inter Miami fans won't have to wait to see Lionel Messi and Rodrigo De Paul on the field together wearing their favorite club's uniforms. De Paul, who this week joined his good friend Messi and Inter Miami on a four-year loan-to-buy deal with Atletico Madrid, was listed in the starting lineup for Wednesday night's Leagues Cup opener against Liga MX powerhouse Atlas at Chase Stadium. De Paul joins Messi and Jordi Alba, who are back in Miami's lineup after serving their one-game suspension last Saturday for not playing in the MLS All-Star Game last week. They will be joined by Sergio Busquets and Luis Suarez as Inter Miami will play its usual lineup as the 2023 Leagues Cup champions try to open this year's revamped tournament on a positive note. De Paul, who is a key player on the Argentine national team, had yet to train with Inter Miami per coach Javier Mascherano, but he said he was in great shape. De Paul's paperwork cleared in time for him to immediately suit up for his new squad. Inter Miami is hopeful the 31-year-old star midfielder can make an immediate impact thanks to his on-field chemistry with Messi and his overall skill and speed. Also returning to Inter Miami's lineup is Maxi Falcon, who missed the club's recent 0-0 draw with FC Cincinnati due to yellow card accumulation. Benja Cremaschi, who started that game at left back, is available as a reserve. Gonzalo Lujan, Telasco Segovia, Tadeo Allende, Marcelo Weigandt and Rocco Rios Novo, who will start once again in goal for the injured Oscar Ustari, round out Inter Miami's starting lineup.

Inter Miami opens 2025 Leagues Cup campaign against Atlas on Wednesday
The 2025 Leagues Cup kicks off Wednesday, and Inter Miami is ready to get to work. A turbulent week saw both Lionel Messi and Jordi Alba pass on their invitations to the exhibition in Austin, triggering an automatic one-game club suspension under MLS rules, which bars players from their next league match if they miss the All-Star Game without prior approval. That sidelined both stars in Saturday's 0-0 draw against FC Cincinnati. The club was reportedly 'extremely upset' by the league's 'draconian' policy. However, they managed to find a silver lining. 'They had some mandatory rest after many consecutive matches, so I think it ended up being a good thing,' Inter Miami coach Javier Mascherano said. 'Now, starting this new marathon of games with the Leagues Cup and more MLS matches, they feel refreshed and ready.' Both Messi and Alba were happily back on the pitch during Tuesday's training session, signaling they're ready for the next phase of a demanding summer. Inter Miami now enters the Leagues Cup — a high-stakes tournament featuring all 18 Liga MX clubs and 18 qualifying MLS teams — with plenty to play for. A CONCACAF Champions Cup automatic bid awaits the winner, and with a packed schedule ahead, Miami knows the road will be tough. 'We know this is going to be a very high-level competition,' midfielder Benjamin Cremaschi said. 'We know it will be tough; we know we will have to compete, but we'll take every opportunity to get as far as we can.' Under the tournament's revamped format, Miami will play three group-stage matches against Liga teams Atlas, Necaxa, and Pumas UNAM between Wednesday and August 7. But while it will face Mexican clubs on the pitch, Miami will compete in an MLS-only table, with only the top four MLS clubs across all groups advancing to the knockout stage. 'Tomorrow is going to be very important for us to start this tournament on the right note,' Mascherano said. Should it advance, the team will enter a single-elimination bracket, where matchups are cross-league, seeded by group-stage performance. Helping Miami's push is a major addition: midfielder Rodrigo De Paul joins on a four-year loan-to-buy deal from Atlético Madrid. A key figure on Argentina's national team alongside Messi, De Paul brings fast footwork and a well-established chemistry to the roster. '[Having De Paul] speaks to the level the club is trying to achieve,' midfielder Tadeo Allende said. 'It motivates us to play alongside someone who's won at the highest level and to learn from him.' Mascherano confirmed De Paul has yet to train with the full squad but said he's in 'great shape' and will be available as soon as paperwork clears. First up for Inter Miami: a tough test against Atlas FC on Wednesday night at 7:30. Former Atlanta United manager Gonzalo Pineda now heads Atlas, and he has beaten Miami in two of their past three meetings. Pineda knows what his team is up against, and he's not backing down. 'Inter Miami is a very mature team, and there is an aura surrounding them,' Pineda said. 'To have so many stars on one team is something else, but once the referee blows the whistle, we'll just focus on taking the ball off their feet. Cutting them off is something this team can do very well.' The atmosphere promises to be electric, with thousands of Atlas fans expected to travel from Guadalajara and across the U.S. to Chase Stadium in Fort Lauderdale 'Many of our fans can't make it to Mexico to see us, so we're bringing a little bit of Mexico to them here,' said Atlas captain Aldo Rocha. 'Giving them a win tomorrow would be something special — for them and for us.'

The 22nd of those 52 different numbers is jersey No. 21, which has has had a total of 26 players wear the number in the history of the team. The 16th of those players wearing No. 21 played in the (then) New Jersey (now, Brooklyn) Nets era, wing alum Bobby Simmons. After ending his college career at DePaul, Simmons was picked up with the 42nd overall selection of the 2001 NBA Draft by the Seattle SuperSonics. The Chicago, Illinois native would play the first two seasons of his pro career with the Washington Wizards instead after a draft night deal, though. He would also play for Los Angeles Clippers and Milwaukee Bucks before he was dealt to New Jersey in 2008. His stay with the team would span span two seasons, coming to an end when he signed with the San Antonio Spurs in 2010. During his time suiting up for the Nets, Simmons wore only jersey No. 21 and put up 7.2 points, 3.6 rebounds, and 1.1 assists per game. All stats and data courtesy of Basketball Reference. Former England footballer and Inter Miami owner David Beckham has said that Argentina midfielder Rodrigo de Paul is a player that he has admired for a long time and as a leader, he has contributed well to the teams he has played for, and hence, he brought him into Inter Miami. Speaking to the media on Saturday, July 26, Beckham opened up on De Paul's move to Inter Miami, saying that he would be a crucial footballer for the team. Miami, meanwhile, used the pre-game festivities to unveil new star signing De Paul, Lionel Messi's World Cup-winning Argentina team-mate. 'He brings experience, passion and quality to the team. Rodrigo is a player I've admired for many years. As a leader, he's contributed greatly to the teams he's played for, especially his national team, Argentina," Beckham said. De Paul said that he is keen on competing for trophies, acknowledging that the Inter Miami management was building a special side. 'What brings me to Inter Miami is the desire to compete, win titles, to write the pages in the club's history. The 31-year-old left Atlético Madrid, where he's played for the last four years, for Major League Soccer on a short-term contract with Inter Miami that could lead to a multiyear deal. De Paul and national team buddy Messi hope to continue to elevate Inter Miami, which has reached historic heights since Messi arrived two years ago. The Herons reached the knockouts of the Club World Cup and have won their past five Major Soccer League games as they eye a second straight Supporters' Shield. The deal, which has been in the works for multiple weeks, comes as negotiations between Messi and Inter Miami on a contract extension remain ongoing. view comments Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
