Elmenus Appoints Walid El-Saadany as CEO, Succeeding Amir Allam
Elmenus, Egypt's leading food-tech platform, has announced the appointment of Walid El-Saadany as Chief Executive Officer and member of the Board of Directors, succeeding founder Amir Allam, who will continue to serve on the Board. This leadership transition marks a defining moment for Elmenus as it accelerates into a new era of nationwide expansion, artificial intelligence (AI) integration, and deeper restaurant ecosystem enablement.
'Elmenus is at an inflection point,' Walid El-Saadany stated. 'We're entering a new chapter, one rooted in local relevance and powered by world-class execution. We aim to become more than a food delivery platform; we are building an ecosystem that empowers Egyptian talent, supports small businesses, and leads the country's digital transformation'.
After 14 years of founding Elmenus, Amir Allam shared: 'What began 2011 with $5,000, a laptop and two teammates, became a household brand that impacted millions of users, created jobs for tens of thousands, and brought lasting positive change to an entire industry.
It is now the right time to pass the baton as the company enters a new phase of sustainable growth building on the brand's strong foundations and loyal customers. I remain fully committed as a Board member and advocate of our mission to elevate Egypt's food industry'.
Elmenus: A Success Story Spanning Over 12 Years
Founded in 2011, Elmenus has grown into one of the leading food discovery and ordering platforms in the region. Under the leadership of Founder and CEO Amir Allam for the past 12 years, the company has experienced significant growth and profitability trajectories.
In the past 12 months alone, more than 8.5 million unique users engaged with the platform across four major cities, exploring millions of dishes from over 12,000 restaurant partners. Of these, more than 1,000 restaurants are currently live for online ordering.
Elmenus has raised $30 million in funding to date, backed by prominent investors including Careem, Global Ventures, Algebra Ventures, and former Just Eat CEO David Buttress.
A New Era Led by a Visionary Operator
With nearly two decades of experience spanning entrepreneurship, logistics, venture capital, and platform scaling, Walid El-Saadany brings a uniquely balanced perspective to Elmenus. He played a pivotal role in shaping Egypt's online food delivery sector, having led Otlob through two of the industry's most significant acquisitions—first by Foodpanda, followed by a strategic deal with Delivery Hero, which rebranded the platform as Talabat. These milestones highlight El-Saadany's leadership in navigating major business transformations and steering companies through critical phases of growth and evolution.
Elmenus: Powering Egypt's Food-Tech Future
Elmenus is charting a bold new course to shape Egypt's food-tech landscape—powered by local talent, smart technology, and a deep commitment to inclusion.
Under CEO Walid El-Saadany, the platform is scaling beyond Cairo, Giza, and Alexandria, onboarding over 4,000 restaurants across underserved cities and towns. It's also enhancing the app with AI-driven features—smarter discovery, faster delivery, and real-time tracking—to create a more personalized and efficient user experience.
Walid El-Saadany adds: "It's not just about expansion, but about going deeper—enhancing service quality and approaching the local market more effectively."
A core focus is investing in Egyptian talent. From developers to delivery riders, Elmenus is building future-ready teams through upskilling programs and leadership training—helping Egypt compete globally in the digital economy.
The platform provides comprehensive support to its restaurant partners through advanced digital tools, loyalty programs designed to boost engagement, and analytical dashboards that drive sustainable growth. It also plans to launch a range of social initiatives, including empowering women to establish and manage independent community kitchens, supporting and enabling youth in the tech sector, and promoting greater inclusion of delivery riders within the ecosystem—reinforcing Elmenus' position as a brand with genuine social impact.
Food Meets Tourism and Financial Inclusion
As Egypt's tourism sector grows, Elmenus offers visitors a convenient gateway to local cuisine—from street food gems to fine dining—delivered seamlessly. The platform also expands access to digital payments, supporting Egypt's cashless transformation with bank cards, wallets, and fintech integrations.
AI at the Core
By harnessing AI, Elmenus optimizes prep times, pricing, and food discovery—empowering restaurants and delighting users.
'We're not just delivering food,' says El-Saadany. 'We're delivering opportunity—for people, partners, and communities.'
As Egypt's leading homegrown food delivery platform, Elmenus stands out for its local-first ethos, fair partnerships, and tech-driven approach—building not just a company, but a food-tech movement that matters.

INTERVIEW: Bazaar founder Lydia Akram on modest fashion, Egypt's homegrown retail revival - Style - Life & Style
In this Ahram Online exclusive, Lydia Akram — founder of LA Market and a pioneer of Egypt's modest fashion bazaars — talks scaling up, spotlighting local brands, and why Cairo is becoming a regional shopping destination. Related Austin and US embassy in Cairo pave way for 11 Egyptian fashion entrepreneurs In mid-July, Akram hosted her eighth fashion-plus event of 2025 at the Egyptian International Exhibitions Center. The three-day exhibition featured over 250 Egyptian brands offering everything from modest clothing and kids' wear to home décor and prepared foods, drawing over 20,000 visitors. For Akram, this is more than a business milestone. It's the culmination of a vision that began in 2018, when she first launched LA Market as a one-woman initiative, with just 20 brands and a small social media campaign. The debut event drew 2,000 visitors—less than one-tenth of the most recent turnout. Akram, a logistics management graduate and mother, saw an early gap in the Egyptian retail space for stylish, modest clothing—years before 'modest fashion' became a global trend. She explained that there was always demand for modest dressing, but many women, hijab-wearing or not, were tired of clothes that were awkwardly adapted to be modest, rather than designed that way from the start. The 2016 currency devaluation had already made imported fast fashion prohibitively expensive for many. This shift in consumer behaviour created an opening for affordable, well-made local alternatives. Today, Akram heads a 25-member team and works with more than 300 homegrown brands, with another 2,000 on the waiting list. But she insists that the real story is 'about the wonderful job the many good local brands have been doing.' 'I really think what the local brands have been offering in general, but specifically in terms of modest dressing, is the core of the success story,' Akram said. 'Obviously, we are very particular about who joins our LA Market, not just in terms of quality but also in terms of making sure that it is really and truly 100 per cent Egyptian from styling to production.' According to Akram, the success of these local brands is similar to that of the LA Market – and for that matter other brands that do not necessarily specialize in modest fashion: 'it is an incremental process of catering for the local taste with high quality products – not just in terms of clothing, although this remains to be the number one item on the list of purchases, but also in terms of skin care, beauty products, home décor and more.' The COVID-19 pandemic also reshaped the retail landscape, Akram explained. 'When people were confined to their homes and were surfing the net to do all kinds of shopping.' With the relaxation of the pandemic restrictions, she recalled, people were still not very keen to move around crowded shopping malls. Bazaars held in open spaces proved to be a very attractive idea. 'Luckily, because of this, my business did not die; I was scared that it was going to be crushed with COVID, but it turned out that the pandemic created some new spaces,' she said. Local production, Akram argued, expanded in the wake of the pandemic, with some people having used the time to think through long-procrastinated business plans or to decide on a new career path. Many new local brands came out across the board in the year after the pandemic, she insisted. Post-pandemic, LA Market has also gained international traction. 'We actually get visitors who are coming from many Arab countries, Europe and North America who actually book their flights to town in line with scheduled bazaars,' she stated. She also receives many foreign shoppers in a permanent store she set up this year for a selected choice of 80 local brands 'specifically for modest wear.' 'I think we do have some really impressive local brands that deserve a lot more attention, and the way forward is to try to take these brands to the international market – somehow,' Akram added. Her next ambition is to help these brands break into global markets. Helping these brands export their ware, Akram said, would expand the volume of their production, and this, 'by definition', could take them to the mass-production threshold, which is necessary to get the prices down. 'I am aware that some people are complaining about the pricing of local brands, but it all relates to the volume of production,' she added. She stresses that around 95 per cent of the brands working with LA Market are women-led schemes, including some projects specifically designed to help women of all socio-economic brackets expand their income, fulfil their passion, and maintain good cognitive functions. Currently, Akram has around 300 local brands on the business partners list. 'And we have some 2000 others on the waiting list; this is to indicate the growing volume of local brands,' she concludes. The exhibition has also devoted a special section to the 'Golden City,' one of the most important archaeological discoveries in recent years. Excavations revealed a large residential complex dating back to the reigns of King Amenhotep III and King Akhenaten, offering unprecedented insights into the daily lives of artisans and their families.

Hundreds of Volunteers at the Abu El-Enein Foundation Participate in 11th Convoy to Gaza
Rana Atef As part of Egypt's ongoing humanitarian support to the Palestinian people, the Abu El-Enein Foundation for Social and Cultural Work continues its intensive work to launch the 11th relief convoy to Gaza. This effort falls under the alliance of the National Alliance for Civil and Developmental Work, with the participation of hundreds of volunteers who work hard. The foundation's warehouses are witnessing evolved activity, as volunteers work to pack, wrap, and sort the aid supplies according to a carefully planned system that ensures urgent humanitarian needs are delivered to those who need them most inside Gaza. The convoy includes trucks loaded with dry food packages and essential relief materials intended to meet the needs of Palestinian families affected by ongoing aggression and blockade. The foundation emphasized that this convoy is a continuation of its active participation in relief efforts since the beginning of the crisis, reaffirming its national and humanitarian commitment and its dedication to being at the forefront of Egyptian civil society efforts in supporting the Palestinian people. Active coordination for the convoy's launch is being conducted under the direct guidance and real-time follow-up of Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives and Chairman of the Foundation, MP Mohamed Abu El-Enein, along with Vice Chair of the Board, Somaya Abu El-Enein. All stages of the process are being closely reviewed to ensure the highest levels of efficiency, speed, and precision. It is worth noting that Egypt has sent more than 35,000 humanitarian aid trucks through the Rafah crossing since last October, carrying over 130,000 tons of food, medicine, and logistical support—making it one of the largest ongoing regional relief operations to date.
