Vidaamuyarchi To Kuberaa, How Tamil Cinema Fared In Early 2025
Tamil cinema kicked off 2025 with a bang, boasting a star-studded lineup that promised a blockbuster year. While a few films lived up to the hype, others missed the mark, leaving fans divided and critics unimpressed. From Kamal Haasan 's Thug Life to Dhanush's Kuberaa, some of the most anticipated titles of the first half of 2025 didn't quite meet expectations. Let's take a closer look at how the industry has fared so far.
Tamil Cinema in the First Half of 2025
The year began with the release of Vidaamuyarchi, starring Ajith Kumar and directed by Magizh Thirumeni. This action thriller follows a troubled couple, played by Ajith and Trisha Krishnan, whose road trip takes a terrifying turn when the wife is kidnapped by a gang. Though the premise, loosely inspired by the Hollywood film Breakdown, had promise, the film underperformed at the box office and failed to impress critics.
Ajith, however, bounced back strongly with Good Bad Ugly, a high-energy action comedy helmed by Adhik Ravichandran. Released in April, the film became a surprise hit and reaffirmed his box office pull.
Other major releases included Veera Dheera Sooran – Part 2, the sequel to Vikram's 2023 film. Focused on a man protecting his family at all costs, the film showcased Chiyaan Vikram in an emotionally charged role. Meanwhile, Suriya's Retro, directed by Karthik Subbaraj and co-starring Pooja Hegde, generated buzz ahead of the release but ended up receiving mixed reactions.
Two of the most anticipated titles of the year—Kamal Haasan's Thug Life and Dhanush's Kuberaa—also received a lukewarm response. While Thug Life attempted to explore dark, layered themes through Kamal's complex character, and Kuberaa delivered a gritty, intense Dhanush performance, both films fell short of audience expectations, with critics calling them ambitious but inconsistent.
As we head into the second half of 2025, all eyes are now on Rajinikanth's Coolie and Sivakarthikeyan's Madharasi. Will these upcoming releases strike the right chord and bring the box office magic that Tamil cinema is known for? The next few months will reveal all.

Kuberaa Continues Box Office Run After A Slow Week 2, Next Stop Is Rs 85 Crore
Kuberaa opened to strong reviews from fans and critics alike, especially for its engaging storyline and cast performances. Kuberaa, the Dhanush, Nagarjuna Akkineni and Rashmika Mandanna-starrer crime drama has been enjoying a successful run at the box office. The film, which opened to strong numbers and saw a solid first-week run, has slowed down significantly in its second week. Despite that, it has managed to cross the Rs 80 crore mark and is now heading towards the Rs 85 crore mark at the domestic box office. According to Kuberaa minted Rs 80 Lakhs on its second Wednesday, taking the film's total 13-day collection to Rs 83.55 crore Nett in India across all languages. The film witnessed a grand opening weekend, collecting Rs 14.75 crore on Day 1, Rs 16.5 crore on Saturday and Rs 17.35 crore on Sunday. In its first week, Kuberaa collected Rs 69 crores across all languages. Kuberaa opened to strong reviews from fans and critics alike, especially for its engaging storyline and cast performances. Megastar Chiranjeevi, who attended the film's success party, said no one else could have played the character of Deva better than Dhanush, and that he couldn't recognise Dhanush at first while watching the film because the actor seemed so immersed in the character. 'Deva is the character in this film who touched my heart the most. 'No one else can play this character except Dhanush," he said. 'It has become a regular affair for you. But let me wish you well in advance. Congratulations, the award for best actor should come to you. If you win, everyone will be proud. Otherwise, there is no point to National Awards. Certainly, you will win." Apart from Dhanush, Nagarjuna and Rashmika, the film also features actor Jim Sarbh in the leads. Devi Sri Prasad composed the music for the film, and Niketh Bommi did the cinematography. Ramakrishna Sabbani and Monika Nigotre are the production designers of the film, which has been co-written by Chaithanya Pingali. Kuberaa depicts the story of Deva, a beggar whose life gets altered by an encounter with Deepak, a former CBI officer. The film addresses themes of greed, power, and redemption via a social and political storyline. Deva gets caught in a world of black money laundering and shadow finance, while Deepak, initially honest, is dragged into a corrupt system. First Published:

‘Thug Life': Kamal Haasan-Mani Ratnam film drops on OTT after 28-day theatrical run
Thug Life, starring Kamal Haasan and directed by Mani Ratnam, has arrived on the OTT space after its 28-day theatrical run. The gangster drama, which hit the screens on June 05, 2025, failed to create magic at the box office. Produced by Kamal Haasan's Raaj Kamal Films International and Mani Ratnam's Madras Talkies, Thug Life is currently streaming on Netflix. The Tamil film also stars Silambarasan T R, Nasser, Trisha, Joju George and Ashok Selvan. Thug Life opened to negative reviews from critics. Fans were disappointed that the Kamal Haasan-Mani Ratnam combinaion couldn't recreate the magic of Nayakan (1987), the first collaboration between the two artists. The movie is about an ageing gangster who has to protect his family when a power struggle tears through his clan, and enemies return seeking vengeance. The Hindu review of the film said, 'It doesn't help that the film fails to add more to its archaic fight-for-the-throne conflict at the centre of the film. Subplots and layers seem added purely for convenience, like a character that returns in the climax to serve a meagre purpose. You also feel bad for Silambarasan since Amar never comes into his own or grows beyond what the plot requires him to do. A lion's share of the screen space is given to Kamal, and the veteran aces his role as an ageing man fighting the God of Death — be it in the more tender moments like the aforementioned scene with Abhirami, or the many face-offs he has on rooftops and cliffs. But is he really feeling the weight of his actions or questioning his morality as the Sakthivel Naicker we once knew? The verdict is still out.' Thug Life missed its release in Karnataka due to a controversy. During a promotional event, Kamal Haasan said that 'Kannada language is born from Tamil', leading to widespread opposition in the State. The makers of Thug Life moved court for a smooth release of the movie. Despite a favourable response from the Supreme Court, Thug Life had no takers in Karnataka as it failed to meet expectations at the box office.
