HONG KONG: China stocks struggled for direction on Tuesday as the second quarter economic growth slowed, while a tech rally boosted Hong Kong shares, thanks to Nvidia's resumption of chip sales to China.
At the close, China's blue-chip CSI300 Index was flat, while the Shanghai Composite Index lost 0.4%.
Hong Kong benchmark Hang Seng climbed 1.6%. Tech giants listed in Hong Kong jumped 2.8%.
Data showed China's gross domestic product grew 5.2% in the April-June quarter from a year earlier, slowing from 5.4% in the first quarter, but just beating analysts' consensus expectations of a 5.1% rise in a Reuters poll.
Analysts said the U.S.-China trade truce and strong exports helped the world's No.2 economy avoid a sharp slowdown.
Meanwhile, the property downturn remained a drag on overall growth, with investment in the sector falling 11.2% year-on-year in the first six months.
In June, China's new home prices fell at the fastest monthly pace in eight months, highlighting the weak demand.
China stocks gain on pickup in exports
CSI 300 real estate dropped more than 1%, among the worst performers in mainland A-shares.
The market didn't move much as there are offsetting data, said Kai Wang, Asia equity market strategist, Morningstar.
'For the bad news, consumption sales and housing prices, two key areas that required improvement, did not really show us any significant improvement,' Wang said.
However, U.S. tariffs have not affected China's overall economy as feared thanks to resilient export data, he added.
Meanwhile, the news that Nvidia will resume sales of its H20 artificial intelligence chip to China lifted cloud computing, 5G communications stocks.
In Hong Kong, internet giants jumped, with Alibaba and Tencent gaining 7% and 4%, respectively.
The latest news is positive for overall sector sentiment, and for Alibaba/Tencent/Baidu /Kingsoft Cloud, said Thomas Chong, an analyst at Jefferies.

Nvidia to resume 'H20' AI chips sales to China

Nvidia logo is seen in this illustration taken, January 27, 2025. Photo: Reuters/ File US tech giant Nvidia announced Tuesday it will resume sales of its H20 artificial intelligence chips to China after Washington pledged to remove licensing restrictions that had halted exports. The California-based company produces some of the world's most advanced semiconductors but cannot ship its most cutting-edge chips to China due to concerns that Beijing could use them to enhance military capabilities. Nvidia developed the H20 — a less powerful version of its AI processing units — specifically for export to China. However, that plan stalled when the Trump administration tightened export licensing requirements in April. "The US government has assured Nvidia that licenses will be granted, and Nvidia hopes to start deliveries soon," the company said in a statement Tuesday, adding it was "filing applications to sell the Nvidia H20 GPU again." CEO Jensen Huang, wearing his trademark black leather jacket, told reporters in a video published by Chinese state broadcaster CCTV: "I'm looking forward to shipping H20s very soon, and so I'm very happy with that very, very good news." Defending the policy change, Trump's AI Czar David Sacks told CNBC the H20 was a "deprecated chip" that is "not anywhere close to the state of the art."

Nvidia powers Nasdaq to record high; S&P 500 lags as data, earnings parsed

NEW YORK: The Nasdaq cruised to a fresh record high on Tuesday, powered by a jump in Nvidia, while the S&P 500 hovered below its peak, as investors digested an inflation report and a flurry of major bank earnings. US consumer prices posted their biggest jump in five months in June, hinting that tariffs may be starting to heat up inflation. Still, underlying inflation stayed moderate, offering some reassurance despite the headline spike. Hopes for a July rate cut have all but vanished, and bets on a September move dipped to 55% from 60% after the latest data, according to CME FedWatch. 'It's (CPI data) perfectly in line with expecting the Fed to kind of re-engage on rate cuts at its September meeting,' said Ross Mayfield, investment strategist at Baird. At 11:33 a.m. ET, the S&P 500 gained 0.71 points, or 0.01%, to 6,269.27, and the Nasdaq Composite rose 136.40 points, or 0.66%, to 20,776.73. The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 251.28 points, or 0.57%, to 44,208.37. The Nasdaq was boosted by AI-chip leader Nvidia, which rose 4.4% after unveiling plans to resume sales of its H20 AI chip to China. Other chipmakers also advanced, with Advanced Micro Devices and Super Micro Computer rising more than 6% each. The technology sector rose 1.7% to hit a record high. Meanwhile, Wall Street opened the second-quarter earnings season on a somber note, with banking stocks whipsawing in volatile trade. JPMorgan Chase slipped 0.4% despite raising its 2025 net interest income outlook, while Wells Fargo fell 5% even as its profit rose on reduced loan-loss reserves. BlackRock notched a new milestone , managing a record $12.53 trillion in assets amid optimism over trade deals and rate cuts, yet its shares slid 5.4%. The KBW Bank Index sank to a two-week low, down 1.1%. Bucking the trend, Citigroup climbed 3% after its traders delivered a windfall that boosted second-quarter profits. Mayfield, referring to the banks' results, said 'there must have been a higher bar to clear, but most of the reporters so far have beaten estimates, which is what you want to see.' Despite President Donald Trump's renewed tariff threats - this time aimed at Russia - markets largely brushed off the rhetoric, focusing instead on a breakthrough from negotiations with US trade partners. Hopes were buoyed after Trump signaled a willingness to talk following his weekend warning of 30% tariffs on the European Union and Mexico from August 1. At least four Fed officials including Board Governor Michael Barr are scheduled to speak later in the day, potentially offering fresh clues on the central bank's next steps. Nine of the 11 S&P 500 sectors were trading in the red. Among other movers, Trade Desk surged 9.7% after the software firm was set to join the benchmark S&P 500 index. Declining issues outnumbered advancers by a 2.65-to-1 ratio on the NYSE and by a 2.06-to-1 ratio on the Nasdaq.

Nikkei edges higher amid tech rally

TOKYO: Japan's Nikkei share average nudged higher on Tuesday, as gains in technology stocks were partially tempered by caution ahead of local election results and US inflation data. The Nikkei was up 0.12% at 39,507.28 by the midday break. The index rose as much as 0.46% earlier in the session, buoyed by gains in Nasdaq futures during Asia trade. The US stock futures index advanced after AI chip giant Nvidia said it will resume sales of its H20 graphics processing unit (GPU) chips to China. The broader Topix edged 0.05% higher to 2,824.15. 'The Nasdaq's gains were a positive cue for the Nikkei, but the gains of the Nikkei were limited as the market awaited US price data and the outcome of the national election,' said Takamasa Ikeda, senior portfolio manager at GCI Asset Management. Global investors also await US consumer price data for June, due later in the day, and will monitor for any upward pressure on prices from tariffs. In Japan, markets are wary of a potential defeat for the Liberal Democratic Party and its coalition partner Komeito in the upcoming upper house election on July 20.
