Student Allegedly Gang-Raped At Law College In Kolkata, 3 Arrested

Three people have been arrested for the alleged gang rape of a law student in Kolkata 's Kasba neighbourhood. The attack allegedly took place on the college campus on Wednesday between 7.30 pm and 8.50 pm. Two students are among the three arrested; the third is college staffer.
Kolkata Mayor Firhad Hakim told reporters he had not yet been briefed about "this very serious incident", and said, "I will speak to the police and then address the media." But, unfortunately for Mr Hakim and the ruling Trinamool Congress, the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party has already attacked.
In a post on X, Amit Malviya tore into Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and the Trinamool Congress, sharing a Bengali news report and writing, "Horrific! A female law student was gang-raped inside a law college in Kasba, a suburb of Kolkata, on June 25, by a former student and two college staff members."

He also said a Trinamool member was involved but offered no evidence to back his claim.
"Horror of RG Kar hasn't faded... and yet such heinous crimes continue to rise daily in Bengal. Under Mamata Banerjee's rule, Bengal has become a nightmare for women. Rape has turned into a routine..."
BJP National Spokesperson Pradeep Bhandari also attacked the Trinamool on X, declaring, "Shameful! Bengal under TMC sinks deeper into lawlessness. On 25th June, a college girl was allegedly gang-raped at Kasba Law College, involving two current students and one ex-student... "
Neither Ms Banerjee nor the Trinamool have responded to Mr Malviya and Mr Bhandari's jabs.
The RG Kar Rape, Murder
This horrific incident comes 10 months after the shocking rape and murder of a junior doctor at the city's RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The RG Kar case, as it came to be called, made national headlines for its brutality; the body of the young woman was found in a seminar room on the college premises and the autopsy concluded she had been raped and possibly tortured - there were injuries to her genitals, the left leg and right hand, and face - before being strangled.
Sanjay Roy, a 33-year-old civic volunteer for Kolkata Police, was arrested and convicted for the rape and murder of the woman, and was sentenced to life in prison, a punishment that was seen as too lenient by many; they, including the family, had demanded a death sentence.
The RG Kar rape and murder case also sparked a massive political row in Bengal - as this will too - ahead of an Assembly election next year, with Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and the ruling Trinamool Congress severely criticised for the police and government's handling of the case.

Monojit Mishra, a 31-year-old practising criminal lawyer at the Alipore Court, has been arrested by Kolkata Police as the prime accused in the alleged gangrape of a 24-year-old first-year student at South Calcutta Law College on June 25. However, this is not his first run-in with the law. 'History-sheeter' Monojit Mishra faces charges of molestation, theft, vandalism before Kolkata student gangrape case(X, PTI) Mishra was arrested along with two others — Zaib Ahmed (19) and Pramit Mukherjee (20) — who have also been named as co-accused in the case. All three are associated with the law college, where the alleged assault took place. Subsequently, the police also arrested the college's 55-year-old security guard, Pinaki Banerjee, for 'failing in his duties' during the incident. Media reports, citing police records, indicate that Mishra is a 'history-sheeter' with multiple serious charges against him, including assault, molestation, theft, and vandalism. Mishra was once a student leader associated with the Trinamool Congress Chhatra Parishad (TMCP), but was removed from the post in 2021 due to complaints of unruly behaviour. The TMC has distanced itself from Mishra. 1. Accused of theft from friend's house after New Year's Eve party in 2019 In a separate incident from late December 2019, Mishra was accused of stealing a gold chain, music system, perfume, and a pair of spectacles from a friend's home in Haridevpur. As per The Telegraph, the case was registered in the first week of January 2020, and police later filed a chargesheet against him. Molestation case in Kasba in 2022 In March 2022, Mishra was again accused—this time of molesting a woman in Kasba. Assault on college guard and vandalism in 2024 In May 2024, the law college administration lodged a formal complaint against Mishra for allegedly assaulting the college security guard, Sanjib Kumar Sil, and vandalising property on campus. According to The Telegraph, this was among several complaints filed by college authorities over the years. Kolkata police constitutes special probe team According to police, cases against Mishra have been registered at Kalighat, Kasba, Alipore, Haridevpur, and Tollygunge police stations. 'Monojit Mishra is a history-sheeter with several cases and chargesheets against him in the Kolkata Police jurisdiction,' a senior officer told The Telegraph. Meanwhile, Kolkata Police has formed a special investigation team (SIT) to probe the gangrape case. The SIT will be led by an officer of assistant commissioner rank. 'An SIT has been formed to probe into the alleged crime. It will start its investigation immediately," a senior official said.

Bihar voter list revision: No need for 4.96 Crore electors to submit documents, clarifies Election Commission
The Election Commission of India has uploaded the 2003 electoral roll of Bihar, comprising details of 4.96 crore electors, on its website, the poll panel said on June 30. These 4.96 crore electors do not need to submit any documents, the poll panel said. It also said that the children of these 4.96 crore electors need not submit any other document relating to their parents. The Election Commission's clarification comes days after Opposition parties – including the Congress, the TMC, the RJD and left parties – raised objections to the poll panel's 'Special Intensive Revision' of electoral rolls just three months ahead of the assembly elections in Bihar. The ease of availability of 2003 Electoral Rolls of Bihar, would hugely facilitate the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) in Bihar as now nearly 60 per cent of the total electorate, would not have to submit any documents, the poll panel said. "They (4.96 crore voters) have to just verify their details from the 2003 Electoral Rolls in the electoral rolls and submit the filled-up Enumeration Form, it said. Further, as per instructions, anyone whose name is not in the 2003 Bihar Electoral Roll can still use the extract of 2003 Electoral Roll rather than providing any other documents for his/her mother or father, the poll panel said. 'In such cases, no other document would be required for his/her mother or father. Only the relevant extract/details of the 2003 ER would be sufficient. Such electors would have to submit the documents, only for themselves, along with the filled-up Enumeration Form,' it said. Beginning June 25, the Election Commission is holding the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) in poll-bound Bihar. This means electoral rolls for Bihar will be prepared afresh. The move sparked a political row, with the Congress opposing it, saying it risks the willful exclusion of voters using the state machinery. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee called the move 'more dangerous than NRC (National Register of Citizens)' and alleged that her state, which heads to polls next year, was the real 'target'. In the process, the Booth Level Officers (BLOs) are conducting a house-to-house survey for verification during the process of this intensive revision. In the previous special intensive revisions, BLOs would go house to house with an 'enumeration pad' to be filled by the head of a household. This time, however, each voter in a household will have to submit an individual enumeration form. Voters added to the electoral rolls after January 1, 2003 — the year of the last intensive revision — must provide proof of citizenship. The ECI's Form 6, which registers new electors, requires applicants to sign a declaration that they are citizens, and not furnish documentation proving the fact. The ECI has now added a new declaration form requiring proof of citizenship for the special roll revision exercise in Bihar. Documents such as passport, birth certificate, SC/ST certificate, an extract of one's parents' name in the electoral roll of Bihar as of January 1, 2003 will be considered as a sufficient documents to prove citizenship. The other documents are pension payment order, permanent residence certificate, national register of citizens, family register by local authorities, land allotment certificate, to name a few.

Kolkata Gangrape Case: The investigation into the alleged rape of a 21-year-old student at South Calcutta Law College has taken a critical turn, as the Special Investigation Team (SIT) of Kolkata Police recovered key forensic evidence, including clothes worn by the main accused—referred to as 'M'—that matched those seen in CCTV footage, according to Anandabaazar Patrika. The Bengali daily refused to identify 'M' in their reports. The SIT also visited the homes of all three accused — Monojit Mishra, Jayeb, and Pramit — and collected multiple samples. Kolkata Police officials revealed that a red kurta, brown trousers with six pockets, and black shorts were recovered from the Kolkata gangrape prime accused 'M's residence. These were the exact clothes the Kolkata gangrape case prime accused, Monojit Mishra, was seen wearing during the time of the incident, according to the Bengali publication's report citing the CCTV footage. The items have been sent for forensic analysis and are expected to play a vital role in corroborating the victim's account. The SIT, initially comprising five officers and now expanded to nine, is led by Assistant Commissioner (South Suburbs) Pradeep Kumar Ghoshal. A female officer has also joined the probe. The team visited the homes of all three accused on Sunday, collecting clothing, electronic devices, and other physical evidence. Investigators are probing whether the accused used any other gadgets beyond their mobile phones. According to the ABP report, the South Kolkata law college gangrape survivor was taken back to the crime scene to help reconstruct the sequence of events. The 21-year-old law student told officers that the sexual assault began inside the student union room of the south Kolkata law college, but escalated when she was dragged into the guard's room, where the rape occurred. The gangrape survivor claimed to have suffered a head injury during the assault and alleged that one of the accused attempted to strike her with a hockey stick. The stick has since been recovered, and strands of torn hair were also found at the scene and have now been sent for DNA testing. CCTV footage from 7:30 pm to 10:50 pm on 25 June has been collected. Investigators say the footage supports the survivor's claims and places the accused at the scene. The security guard, who allegedly failed to intervene, has also been arrested. The gangrape survivor's family has stated that they do not want a CBI probe at this stage and have expressed faith in the Kolkata Police investigation. According to several local media reports, the arrested guard, Pinaki Bandopadhyay, has revealed to investigators that another female student was present at the union room throughout the day before the survivor was assaulted. Around 8:30 pm, that female student left the college. On the day of the incident, Pinaki was assigned to the night shift, while another security guard had been on duty during the day shift, whose statement is also likely to be recorded as part of the investigation.
