'Govt has a significant role': RG Kar victim's father speaks out; slams TMC for Kolkata law student gangrape

NEW DELHI: Nearly a year after the shocking rape and murder of a student at RG Kar Medical College in Kolkata, city witnessed another disturbing case. Speaking on the incident, the RG Kar victim's father expressed anger over the repeated crimes, blamed the Mamata Banerjee-led state government, and demanded strict punishment for the accused. A female law student was allegedly gang-raped inside her college in South Kolkata's Kasba area on Wednesday evening, raising fresh concerns about women's safety in the city. ANI news agency quoted him saying, "Such incidents are happening again and again. After what happened with my daughter, many people came out on the streets in protest. Even after that, such incidents continue to occur. People inside the college are committing such incidents. The government has a significant role in this, which is why all these incidents are happening. All three people arrested are from the TMC , so this political party should ensure that such incidents do not happen again. The accused should be severely punished." The BJP also reacted strongly. In a post on X, the party said TMC stands for "Terror, Molester, and Corruption." TMC leader Shashi Panja responded by saying she was deeply disturbed by the incident. She defended the police action and criticised the BJP for politicising the issue. She said, "There was an immediate postmortem and dissection to look at the names and the religion. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like eToro IPO Goes Live on Nasdaq – Discover the IPO Buzz Today eToro Click Here Undo You have to condemn the incident. Rape in Kolkata law college: BJP alleges ‘TMC allows criminals in educational institutes', ruling party says ‘Aparajita Bill needed'

The rape case of a woman in the premises of a Kolkata law college, registered on Friday, has sparked a political row, with the BJP-led Opposition invoking the R G Kar rape and murder case in August last year. BJP state president Sukanta Majumder said, 'This has happened for the second time in Kolkata where in a educational institute, a student was raped. The TMC gave lease to some criminals in educational institutes. This incident came to light, but such incidents are happening across the state… The police are not firmly taking action because the culprits are close to the TMC. Here, I have heard the main accused also threatened her parents. We say: if anyone threatens your child, come to us, we will give full legal support.' TMC MP Kalyan Banerjee said, 'Police can't be deployed at every college. Male colleagues should be alert and save their female colleagues. Some perverted persons are committing such crimes. Strong action should be taken against them. On the other hand, women should also stand against such crimes.' Meanwhile, Jayprakash Majumder, vice-president of TMC told mediapersons, 'This is a social malice. We all condemn the incident. We should all fight against this unitedly. This is not the time for blame games. Kolkata police has made a prompt arrest and justice will be served.' The Trinamool Congress also took to X, stating: 'We unequivocally condemn the tragic rape incident at (the college). Kolkata Police have swiftly apprehended all three accused, and the full weight of the law will be brought to bear, ensuring the most severe measures are imposed on those found guilty… This tragedy once again underscores the urgent need for the implementation of the Aparajita Anti-Rape Bill to establish a strong deterrent against sexual offences, emphasising the necessity for speedy investigations, swift trials, and stringent punishments. It is extremely unfortunate that the BJP government at the Centre has not lifted a finger to get it implemented.' State secretary of SFI Debanjan Dey alleged that 'the main culprit… is a known criminal of Kalighat. Many cases are pending against him. Even after that, he was given a job at this college. Why didn't the police take action against him?' The TMC continued in its post, '… Our hearts are heavy with sorrow for the profound trauma endured by the victim. The state administration, under Hon'ble Chief Minister Mamaa Banerjee, is committed to providing every possible form of support and assistance to the victim during this distressing time. Justice will be served.'

Kolkata horror: TMC, BJP trade barbs over rape case in law college; cops nab 5 accused

Representative image NEW DELHI: A political blame game has erupted amid the uproar over the rape case that has been reported in a Kolkata-based law college, with both ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) and rival Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) pointing fingers at one another. While TMC pointedly blamed the BJP for "delaying" the passage of the 'Aparajita' anti-rape bill, brought in the wake of the tragic RG Kar rape case, the BJP hit out at the Mamata Banerjee government for "failing to take action in cases involving crimes against women due to political considerations". Condemning the tragic rape incident at South Calcutta Law College, TMC wrote on X: "This tragedy once again underscores the urgent need for the implementation of the Aparajita Anti-Rape Bill to establish a strong deterrent against sexual offences, emphasising the necessity for speedy investigations, swift trials, and stringent punishments. It is extremely unfortunate that the BJP govt at the Centre has not lifted a finger to get it implemented. " Last year, West Bengal governor CV Ananda Bose referred the "Aparajita Woman and Child (West Bengal Criminal Laws Amendment) Bill, 2024" to President Droupadi Murmu, citing "multiple loopholes" in the legislation. The bill, passed by the state assembly following the brutal rape and murder of a trainee doctor at Kolkata's RG Kar Hospital on May 9, 2024, proposes capital punishment for rape convicts if the assault results in the victim's death or leaves her in a vegetative state. The BJP, which is the key opposition in West Bengal, levelled the TMC government "anti-women" and demanded "a fair and unbiased investigation, free from political interference." "TMC government is anti-women, which is why it tries to protect the accused. The Mamata Banerjee government consistently fails to take action in cases involving crimes against women due to political considerations. Data suggests that crimes against women are on the rise in Bengal. We demand a fair and unbiased investigation, free from political interference," BJP spokesperson Pradeep Bhandari told news agency PTI. West Bengal BJP MLA Shankar Ghosh claimed the mentality of society has deteriorated due to the language spoken by CM Mamata Banerjee. "Horrific. I should say that the situation in West Bengal is horrific. The atrocities against women are increasing day by day. The way the girl student was raped within the premises by, as I know the present and the ex-student, shows the deteriorating mentality of our society. I should say that this kind of mentality is due to the language spoken by our is becoming a kind of shelter for these criminals. These arrests are nothing," Ghosh told news agency ANI. In the incident, which is the eerily reminiscent of the gut-wrenching RG Kar case, a student was allegedly raped on the night of June 25 within the premises of a Kolkata law college, leading to the arrest of three men, two students and a staff member who is also an alumnus of the institution. Police identified the accused as Manojit Mishra (31), Zaib Ahmed (19), and Pramit Mukhopadhyay alias Pramit Mukherjee (20).

Student Allegedly Gang-Raped At Law College In Kolkata, 3 Arrested

Kolkata: Three people have been arrested for the alleged gang rape of a law student in Kolkata 's Kasba neighbourhood. The attack allegedly took place on the college campus on Wednesday between 7.30 pm and 8.50 pm. Two students are among the three arrested; the third is college staffer. Kolkata Mayor Firhad Hakim told reporters he had not yet been briefed about "this very serious incident", and said, "I will speak to the police and then address the media." But, unfortunately for Mr Hakim and the ruling Trinamool Congress, the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party has already attacked. In a post on X, Amit Malviya tore into Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and the Trinamool Congress, sharing a Bengali news report and writing, "Horrific! A female law student was gang-raped inside a law college in Kasba, a suburb of Kolkata, on June 25, by a former student and two college staff members." Horrific! A female law student was gang-raped inside a law college in Kasba, a suburb of Kolkata, on 25th June, by none other than a former student and two college staff members. Shockingly, reports suggest that a TMC member is also involved. The horror of RG Kar hasn't faded,… — Amit Malviya (@amitmalviya) June 27, 2025 He also said a Trinamool member was involved but offered no evidence to back his claim. "Horror of RG Kar hasn't faded... and yet such heinous crimes continue to rise daily in Bengal. Under Mamata Banerjee's rule, Bengal has become a nightmare for women. Rape has turned into a routine..." BJP National Spokesperson Pradeep Bhandari also attacked the Trinamool on X, declaring, "Shameful! Bengal under TMC sinks deeper into lawlessness. On 25th June, a college girl was allegedly gang-raped at Kasba Law College, involving two current students and one ex-student... " Neither Ms Banerjee nor the Trinamool have responded to Mr Malviya and Mr Bhandari's jabs. The RG Kar Rape, Murder This horrific incident comes 10 months after the shocking rape and murder of a junior doctor at the city's RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The RG Kar case, as it came to be called, made national headlines for its brutality; the body of the young woman was found in a seminar room on the college premises and the autopsy concluded she had been raped and possibly tortured - there were injuries to her genitals, the left leg and right hand, and face - before being strangled. Sanjay Roy, a 33-year-old civic volunteer for Kolkata Police, was arrested and convicted for the rape and murder of the woman, and was sentenced to life in prison, a punishment that was seen as too lenient by many; they, including the family, had demanded a death sentence. The RG Kar rape and murder case also sparked a massive political row in Bengal - as this will too - ahead of an Assembly election next year, with Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and the ruling Trinamool Congress severely criticised for the police and government's handling of the case.

1 more held over Kaliganj girl's death; victim's mom refuses money from TMC MLA

Kolkata: One more person was arrested on Wednesday over the death of a nine-year-old girl in Kaliganj on June 23. This is the fifth arrest in the case, whereas the FIR names 24 people. Forensic experts collected samples from the crime scene at Malandi village where Tamanna Khatun was killed in a bomb blast during a political procession following Trinamool Congress's victory in the Kaliganj bypolls. Police said the forensic team collected some "white substance", "hair clips stained with blood", and some other articles. These will be sent for chemical examinations. Meanwhile, Tamanna's mother, Sabina Yasmin, refused to accept the money offered by TMC's Debra MLA Humayun Kabir and set a 24-hour deadline for the police to nab all the culprits. Yasmin later alleged that the MLA attempted to give her money in a closed envelope in an attempt to silence her. Kabir told reporters that he was in Kaliganj not as a politician but as a human being. "I think everyone should raise their voice against such bomb attacks," he said. TMC spokesperson Kunal Ghosh said, "The parents are in pain. We will make no political statements on whatever they say. But as we have seen before, including during the RG Kar issue, although people demand a CBI probe, the agency has failed them time and again. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Memperdagangkan CFD Emas dengan salah satu spread terendah?
