Travelling on the NH-16, which connects Bhubaneswar with Cuttack, has become a safety hazard due to non-functional street lights and inadequate maintenance, raising concerns among commuters and pedestrians.The situation has become particularly critical during the ongoing Shravan month, with thousands of kanwariyas (devotees) walking barefoot along the highway carrying water pots to various Shiva shrines in the twin cities. The dark stretches has made their journey increasingly dangerous."This is absolutely harrowing. I walked to the Shiva shrine in Laxmi Sagar for the second time last Sunday, and the street lights were defunct. Vehicles passing dangerously close make it a nightmarish experience," said Krushna Puhan, a kanwariya from Phulnakhara.The problem is compounded by unauthorised vehicle parking during night and stray cattle occupying the main carriageway. With restrictions imposed by commissionerate police on heavy vehicles between 5am and 10pm, trucks enter the city limits after 10pm only.Girija Hota, a shopkeeper at Palasuni, witnessed a recent accident involving cattle. "I saw two bulls fighting in the middle of the highway. A speeding truck hit one of them due to the darkness," he said.National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) said they regularly service the priority stretch. "We will investigate any issues with the street lights and address them promptly," said Suraj Singh, NHAI (project director), Bhubaneswar circle.Traffic authorities promised action. "We will discuss the matter with both NHAI and the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation to address road safety issues on the highway," said an officer of the traffic wing of commissionerate police.With increasing traffic volume and pedestrian movement, especially during festivals, the demand for proper lighting and their maintenance has become more urgent, according to residents and road safety experts."There is a need for a comprehensive safety audit of the highway stretch and implementation of strict enforcement measures against traffic violations. The situation has really worsened due to poor lighting and it needs to be addressed on priority," road safety activist PV Ramana said.

Now, Gaps Emerge On Pardi Flyover
Nagpur: Within just two years after three of the five legs of the Pardi Flyover were opened, multiple gaps between two spans or joints on the Itwari to Bhandara Road stretch and near the rotary have surfaced. While commuters have raised concerns about the gaps on the busy stretch, the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI), which implemented the project, has claimed that there is no cause for alarm. TOI visited the spot on Friday and observed a big gap between the two spans of the flyover on the Itwari or Wardhaman Nagar leg. Apart from this, a gap was also observed on the joint at the rotary from legs coming from Manewada and Central Avenue sides. These gaps have raised serious concerns among commuters, who claimed that they could lead to accidents or cause their valuables, like mobiles or other materials, to fall into them. Since the five-legged flyover, dubbed as 'Khekda Flyover' for its crab-like structure, was announced, it has faced several controversies. A span of the bridge collapsed in October 2021 during construction. The NHAI finally opened the Itwari (Wardhaman Nagar), Kalamna, and Bhandara Road legs of the flyover in September 2023, while the remaining two legs — Manewada and Central Avenue — were opened in February this year. On the next day of its opening, a large chunk of loose concrete fell on a car passing below, damaging it completely. The issue has been primarily witnessed on the leg that was opened in September 2023. A senior NHAI official said that there is no need for alarm. "The gap in the joints is visible because of the rubber seal falling. We will soon install the rubber seals again. There is no problem with the structural integrity of the flyover," said the official. However, locals and commuters are not convinced. "Since the flyover has opened, one issue or another is arising in it. It already took a decade to complete, and now these things are happening, raising serious questions about the quality of the work," said a commuter.

After facing several delays, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has now decided to move forward with this key stretch under the Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT) model. The final proposal has been submitted to the Centre, and tenders will be floated once it gets the green signal, as per Swarajya. Why Is This Highway So Important? The Nashik–Akkalkot corridor is part of the massive 1,271 km Chennai–Surat Expressway, which links six Indian states – Gujarat, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, and Tamil Nadu. This route connects major cities like Surat, Nashik, Solapur, and Tirupati, boosting trade and travel. The 374-km Nashik–Akkalkot stretch is considered one of the most vital segments of the expressway. It will have six lanes and will be built in two parts: Earlier, the project was floated under the hybrid annuity model but didn't take off due to technical and financial challenges. This led NHAI to adopt the BOT model instead, allowing private players to take a more active role. Now, with the Public-Private Partnership Appraisal Committee giving its nod, the project is back on track. How Will This Benefit Travellers? Once the road is ready, travel time between Nashik and Akkalkot will drop from nine hours to just four. And when the full expressway is complete, Nashik to Surat could be done in as little as two hours.
