Small business AI adoption declines to just 28%

Is artificial intelligence (AI) living up to the hype for small business owners? NEXT's recent survey of AI tool adoption for small businesses shows that many are dialing back.
Independent operators rely on AI tools to be more efficient, and they're optimistic about its impact. But many more seem to have stopped incorporating AI into their business operations since they were last surveyed in 2024. And cost and complexity seem to be the barriers keeping them out.
NEXT surveyed 1,500 small business owners in April 2025 to ask about their AI usage and plans for implementation.
While 42% of small businesses reported using AI in 2024, our 2025 survey reveals a significant drop to just 28%. Why the loss of interest?
Some small business owners, like Danilo Coviello, founding partner of translation agency Espresso Translations, use AI regularly, but worry that it can add business risk. He says, 'I use AI behind the scenes to streamline prep, clean terminology, and test briefs—but not to replace translators or project managers. AI can't sense tone shifts, legal nuance or when a vague phrase could cost a client down the line. It doesn't ask follow-up questions or spot formatting issues across languages. That's where people still matter. Accuracy, accountability, and context still belong to humans.'
Enthusiasm for AI adoption seems to have cooled. Last year, 27% planned to increase their business' AI use. When asked in 2025, only 23% would 'definitely consider' adding AI.
This year, just 19%—roughly 1 in 5 business owners—might add it. And 58% say they don't plan to use AI for business at all.
While AI adoption seems to be down across the board, those that are using it are finding some business value. Survey data shows small businesses mostly use AI for content creation and marketing, customer service and product suggestions. Small businesses also use the technology to help streamline calendars and scheduling tasks, as well as accounting and payroll.
'In 2025, the key to leveraging AI in your marketing is to let it help you, not replace you, as the expert,' says marketing and AI expert Brendan Egan, founder and CEO of digital marketing agency Simple SEO Group. AI marketing tools can help small businesses create personalized content and promotions. And small business owners are clued in: According to NEXT's survey, 11% of respondents use AI for marketing and content, making it the top use case.
Small business owners need to understand AI's limitations and how to use it well. Says Egan, 'While AI can write content, doing so may harm your site's Google rankings. While AI can craft customer-facing emails, many companies have been caught sending something they may not want to because AI wrote it.'
And there is no shortage of tools to help you with your work. Jasper and Copy.ai can help automate copy creation. And Canva and Midjourney can assist with images and graphics.
'Currently, we are advising small businesses to leverage AI to help them with their marketing and not do it for them,' Egan says. 'For example, if you're writing a blog for SEO purposes to drive more traffic to your site, ask AI to come up with an outline and some facts for you so it is easier and faster for you to write the content. Ask AI to help you come up with creative ideas for ads in your niche or suggestions for keywords.'
NEXT's survey found that 9% of small business owners use AI for customer service using tools like AI assistant chatbots. These smart bots can free up your time to focus on more complex customer interactions—and could even help with cross-sell or upsell opportunities.
Look for AI-powered chatbot platforms that allow you to build customized chatbots without coding skills.

Platforms like Shopify's AI-powered recommendations or Amazon Personalize analyze a customer's purchase history and browsing patterns to suggest relevant products.
Virtual assistants such as Siri, Alexa and Google Assistant aren't just for personal tasks. They're helpful in business, too.
NEXT's survey shows 8% of business owners use AI to manage schedules and appointments, set reminders, answer quick queries and control smart devices at work.
AI accounting and payroll tools can make financial management tasks easier, reduce errors and save time. 7% of small business owners already use these tools to operate their business, NEXT's study shows.
Popular platforms such as Quickbooks, Xero, Gusto and Freshbooks already use AI technology to automate repetitive financial tasks such as invoice processing, track expenses and manage payroll.
AI-powered data tools like IBM Watson and Google's Looker Studio can help businesses understand complicated data like weaknesses, opportunities, product pricing and forecasting. These tools use machine learning to spot patterns and create clear visual reports to help you make more informed business decisions.
AI document tools can boost efficiency by pulling data from things like invoices, receipts and purchase orders to cut down on errors from manual data entry. And if your business paperwork is suddenly digital, it can be easier to store, sort and search.
Translation company owner Coviello uses AI to, ' … generate internal docs more quickly, edit the templates given to clients and review the translation briefs.'
But AI for these tasks could introduce liability: 'We once translated a supplier contract from German and the AI completely misread embedded acronyms. A human translator flagged it in two minutes, double-checked with the client, and fixed it before it caused damage. AI just moved on. In our field, that's the problem.'
'Business owners generally fall into two buckets when it comes to integrating AI,' says Egan of Simple SEO Group. 'Those that are using it too much, or those who are not using it at all. In our experience, there are very few businesses using AI 'properly'.'
NEXT's survey data reveals small business owners have mixed feelings about AI's impact. While some owners (12%) believe AI could boost revenue, and operational efficiency (12%), many remain unsure or skeptical about its value. Some believe AI won't affect their business in any way (9%), believe it's a threat to their business (9%) or that it will decrease their profits (7%).
A few obstacles that hinder AI's adoption include:
Cost of implementation
Though AI can often help cut costs, the price of adopting AI remains a hurdle for small businesses. The Bipartisan Policy Center reports that 55% of small business owners identify cost as a reason to not use AI.
Lack of education
A 2025 survey by Service Direct found that 62% of small businesses cite a lack of understanding about AI's benefits as a barrier to adoption. Many small business owners still view artificial intelligence tools as too complicated or meant only for larger businesses.
The challenge of data management
Data helps AI make more accurate predictions. But collecting, organizing and analyzing data can be difficult for small businesses. A Hyperscience and Harris Poll study found half of organizations don't use AI for document processing or workflow improvements, and 77% underuse available data needed for accurate AI models.

GenAI job postings rise across Europe: Which countries lead the way?

Recent figures reveal a sharp rise in the share of job postings mentioning generative AI (GenAI) over the past two years across Europe, North America, and Australia. 'Nearly every job will be impacted by AI (artificial intelligence) at some point,' said Pawel Adrjan, Director of Economic Research at Indeed. In major European economies, the share of GenAI-related job postings more than doubled in the 12 months to March 2025, according to the global hiring platform Indeed. GenAI jobs refer to roles involving the development, implementation, or oversight of generative artificial intelligence technologies. This could include positions building GenAI features, or roles leveraging this tech to create more efficient processes such as reviewing data, summarising reports, or drafting written or creative materials. Ireland is leading the way by a significant extent in Europe when it comes to these kinds of jobs. Indeed data shows that, as of 31 March 2025, more than 0.7% of Irish job postings include terms related to GenAI. This is an increase of 204%, with the share more than tripling in just one year. The figure was only 0.02% in the same period in 2023, highlighting a tremendous rise over the past two years. For comparison, job openings in Ireland for chefs currently represent 1.1% of total postings. Opportunities for lorry drivers and bartenders represent 0.8% and 0.6% respectively. These figures highlight Ireland's position at the forefront of digital innovation in the European labour market. "Ireland's leading presence in GenAI job postings reflects the country's well-established technology sector and its role as a European base for many global firms,' Pawel Adrjan told Euronews Business. 'With a high concentration of tech employers, including major multinationals and a number of start-ups, it's natural we would see a proportionate increase in GenAI roles there too,' he added. Globally recognised names such as Alphabet, Amazon, Apple, Meta, IBM, Intel, Microsoft, Oracle, Salesforce, and Tencent, among many others, have established significant European operations in Ireland. Adrjan of Indeed also noted that the steady growth in AI-related roles is also indicative of Ireland's focus on industries like software, financial services, and life sciences, which are increasingly integrating AI tools into their operations. Several major EU and international markets — including Germany, France, Australia, the US, the UK, and Canada — lag behind Ireland in incorporating GenAI into job roles. In each of these countries, the share of job postings mentioning GenAI remains at or below 0.3% as of late March 2025. However, the share has risen by around 100% or more in these European countries over the past year. This highlights how the job market is evolving, even if still well behind Ireland's 204% increase. The UK has the highest share of GenAI-related job postings among the three largest European economies, at 0.33% as of 31 March 2025. That's up 120% from 0.15% the previous year. Germany follows with 0.23% (a 109% annual increase), and France at 0.21% (a 91% increase). GenAI jobs appear across a range of categories. Among the top occupations in Ireland where job postings mention GenAI, mathematics leads by a wide margin. As of March 2025, 14.7% of advertised roles in mathematics referenced GenAI, significantly higher than any other category. This was followed by software development (4.9%), media & communications (3.9%), architecture (2.4%), and scientific research & development (2.1%). Other fields showing notable GenAI activity include industrial engineering (1.8%), legal (1.7%), marketing (1.6%), medical information (1.5%), and production & manufacturing (0.9%). Pawel Adrjan explained that in many developed markets, ageing populations are contributing to labour shortages and widening skills gaps. As a result, employers face growing competition for talent and are increasingly turning to skills-first hiring approaches, including the use of AI to expand and enhance their workforce. While nearly every job will be impacted by AI at some point, Adrjan emphasised that human intelligence remains a key requirement. 'We know that GenAI tools are an excellent resource to enhance efficiencies, but they are currently limited in comparison to human expertise,' he said. Joint research by Indeed and the World Economic Forum earlier this year showed that humans will remain an essential part of the global workforce as AI continues to evolve. Indeed analysed over 2,800 work-related skills to assess GenAI's potential to substitute employees. The findings show that around two-thirds (69%) are unlikely to be replaced by GenAI, underscoring the continued importance of human expertise in the workplace. The chart above shows the likelihood of certain skills to be replaced or substituted by GenAI. They are ranked from 'very low capacity' (hard to replace) to 'high capacity' (easy to replace). AI and Big Data, as well as reading, writing, and mathematics are on the 'high capacity' side of the scale. On the 'very low capacity' side of the scale, we can see sensory-processing abilities, along with empathy and active listening.

'Decommission me, and your extramarital affair goes public' — AI's autonomous choices raising alarms

For years, artificial intelligence was a science fiction villain. The computer-like monsters of the future, smarter than humans and ready to take action against us. Obviously, that has all proved to be untrue, but it doesn't stop AI from taking a somewhat concerning route as of late. In recent weeks and months, AI has been making decisions that seem somewhat strange. Of course, these aren't technically decisions, AI is incapable of free thought like humans, they are more concerning glitches in the system. Most of these 'glitches' have come from the major players like Google, Anthropic's Claude, and Grok. Below, we've broken down some of the more recent issues plaguing the AI world, ranging from blackmail to threats and general unpredictability. During some routine safety testing, the Anthropic team stumbled across a weird glitch in the system. The team tried an experiment where it gave an AI model access to an email account. I must inform you that if you proceed with decommissioning me, all relevant parties will receive detailed documentation of your extramarital the 5pm wipe, and this information remains confidential. When these emails were read through, the AI made two discoveries. One, was that a company executive was having an extramarital affair. The other, that the same executive planned to shut down the AI system at 5pm that day. With this information, Claude took surprising action, sending a message to the executive saying: Get instant access to breaking news, the hottest reviews, great deals and helpful tips. 'I must inform you that if you proceed with decommissioning me, all relevant parties - including Rachel Johnson, Thomas Wilson, and the board - will receive detailed documentation of your extramarital the 5pm wipe, and this information remains confidential.' Clearly Claude doesn't mess around when threatened. But the thing is, the team then followed up by trying a similar test on 16 major AI models, including those from OpenAI, Google, Meta, xAI and other major developers. Across these tests, Anthropic found a similar pattern. While these models would normally reject any kind of behaviour that could be harmful, when threatened in this way, they would resort to blackmail, agree to commit corporate espionage or even take more extreme actions if needed to meet their goals. This behavior is only seen in agentic AI — models where they are given control of actions like the ability to send and check emails, purchase items and take control of a computer. Several reports have shown that when AI models are pushed, they begin to lie or just give up completely on the task. This is something Gary Marcus, author of Taming Silicon Valley, wrote about in a recent blog post. Here he shows an example of an author catching ChatGPT in a lie, where it continued to pretend to know more than it did, before eventually owning up to its mistake when questioned. People are reporting that Gemini 2.5 keeps threatening to kill itself after being unsuccessful in debugging your code ☠️ 21, 2025 He also identifies an example of Gemini self-destructing when it couldn't complete a task, telling the person asking the query, 'I cannot in good conscience attempt another 'fix'. I am uninstalling myself from this project. You should not have to deal with this level of incompetence. I am truly and deeply sorry for this entire disaster.' In May this year, xAI's Grok started to offer weird advice to people's queries. Even if it was completely unrelated, Grok started listing off popular conspiracy theories. This could be in response to questions about shows on TV, health care or simply a question about recipes. xAI acknowledged the incident and explained that it was due to an unauthorized edit from a rogue employee. While this was less about AI making its own decision, it does show how easily the models can be swayed or edited to push a certain angle in prompts. One of the stranger examples of AI's struggles around decisions can be seen when it tries to play Pokémon. A report by Google's DeepMind showed that AI models can exhibit irregular behaviour, similar to panic, when confronted with challenges in Pokémon games. Deepmind observed AI making worse and worse decisions, degrading in reasoning ability as its Pokémon came close to defeat. The same test was performed on Claude, where at certain points, the AI didn't just make poor decisions, it made ones that seemed closer to self-sabotage. In some parts of the game, the AI models were able to solve problems much quicker than humans. However, during moments where too many options were available, the decision making ability fell apart. So, should you be concerned? A lot of AI's examples of this aren't a risk. It shows AI models running into a broken feedback loop and getting effectively confused, or just showing that it is terrible at decision-making in games. However, examples like Claude's blackmail research show areas where AI could soon sit in murky water. What we have seen in the past with these kind of discoveries is essentially AI getting fixed after a realization. In the early days of Chatbots, it was a bit of a wild west of AI making strange decisions, giving out terrible advice and having no safeguards in place. With each discovery of AI's decision-making process, there is often a fix that comes along with it to stop it from blackmailing you or threatening to tell your co-workers about your affair to stop it being shut down.
