Kashmiri man's death in Delhi: Parties seek probe
Zubair Ahmad Bhat, 30, a resident of Ali Kadal in Srinagar, died in New Delhi under mysterious circumstances on Tuesday. His family has alleged that he had gone to Delhi for work and was assaulted in Delhi.
People's Democratic Party leader Iltija Mufti alleged that Bhat was subjected to custodial torture by Delhi Police.

She also met the family and said that his family members showed her the texts he had sent before death.
She said: 'They showed me his last message, which said the police caught him and took his Aadhaar card. He messaged his sister and wrote, 'The police caught me because I am Kashmiri. They took my Aadhaar card, and then they beat me with sticks. I am in a hotel. May God have mercy. His family says he left Jammu for Delhi. After reaching Delhi, the police at one of the stations, I think it was Lajpat Nagar, caught Zubair, took his Aadhaar card, and beat him. The next day, when he went back to collect his Aadhaar card, they beat him again. And when he returned home, he died' is what happened to Zubair.'
Congress leader and AICC chairman of media and publicity, Pawan Khera sought response of Delhi Police regarding Bhat's death.
'In the capital city, a young Kashmiri dies under mysterious circumstances and not a word of it gets discussed in mainstream media? If you don't question the authorities, obviously the authorities won't give you answers. @DelhiPolice needs to respond to questions surrounding the death of Zubair Ahmad Bhat,' he said on X.
National Conference spokesperson Imran Nabi Dar sought an impartial probe.
'In this age of technology & smart policing, I fail to understand how a death could be termed mysterious. Clear the air around the death of Zubair Ahmad in Delhi @DelhiPolice. We demand an impartial, time bound probe into the incident,' Dar said.
Apni Party president Altaf Bukhari said that the J&K administration should take up the matter with Delhi authorities.
'It is now the responsibility of the J&K administration to take up this matter with the authorities in Delhi to ensure that the truth behind his tragic death is fully uncovered,' Bukhari said.

Election Commission files affidavit in SC, defends Bihar SIR exercise
NEW DELHI: The Election Commission of India (ECI) on Monday evening filed an affidavit in the Supreme Court defending the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Bihar, asserting that the exercise was undertaken to restore public confidence and ensure the integrity of the electoral rolls. The affidavit was submitted in compliance with the apex court's July 10 directive, which had asked the Commission to file its counter-affidavit by July 21. The Supreme Court is scheduled to hear the matter further on July 28. The matter is being heard by a vacation Bench comprising Justices Sudhanshu Dhulia and Joymalya Bagchi. In its July 10 order, while refusing to stay the revision of electoral rolls in Bihar, the Bench had directed the Commission to proceed with the process. 'In our prima facie view, since the list is not exhaustive, it would be in the interest of justice for the ECI to also consider the Aadhaar card, Electoral Photo Identity Card issued by the Election Commission, and the ration card,' the Bench had said. The petitions, challenging the ECI's June 24 order initiating the SIR in poll-bound Bihar, were filed by civil society organisations and political leaders, including the Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR), People's Union for Civil Liberties (PUCL), Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra, RJD MP Manoj Jha, Congress leader K.C. Venugopal, and Mujahid Alam, among others. In its affidavit, the Commission informed the court that over 90% of electors had already submitted enumeration forms. "Apart from ensuring that no eligible elector is left out of the rolls, special attention is being given to marginalised and vulnerable communities,' the ECI said. The Commission also defended the exclusion of Aadhaar from the list of documents used in the revision exercise, stating that it does not serve as proof of citizenship under Article 326 of the Constitution. However, it clarified that the list of acceptable documents was indicative and not exhaustive. The ECI submitted that the SIR exercise was initiated following concerns raised by political parties across the spectrum. "This is the first time that all political parties have been involved at such a scale in an intensive revision exercise, with over 1.5 lakh Booth Level Agents (BLAs) working alongside Booth Level Officers (BLOs) to reach out to every eligible elector," the affidavit stated. The Commission contended that many of the figures cited by the petitioners were outdated and not representative of the current scenario. 'The full reports have not been annexed and the Petitioners have deliberately suppressed the fact that these reports do not reflect contemporary data,' it said. The ECI further pointed out that some petitioners were Members of Parliament and legislative assemblies representing recognised political parties in Bihar, and that these parties were actively participating in the SIR process by appointing BLAs. 'These facts were within the Petitioners' knowledge but were not disclosed before this Court,' the affidavit alleged. The Commission reiterated that the revision exercise was being conducted transparently and had received support from political parties across the board. 'All parties have appreciated the necessity and correctness of the exercise and are cooperating to ensure its timely completion,' it added. While justifying the SIR, the Commission maintained that Aadhaar was not proof of citizenship, a requirement essential for electoral roll inclusion.

Former bonded labourers get essential identity documents
Mandya: The zilla panchayat launched a programme to bring 86 identified former bonded labourers into the mainstream by providing them with 13 essential govt identity documents, announced district minister N Cheluvarayaswamy. Speaking at the inauguration of an identity card distribution and health check-up programme for families of former bonded labourers in Maddur taluk, he emphasised the govt's commitment to eradicating bonded labour, which is illegal yet persists due to poverty and lack of awareness. Despite the illegality of bonded labour, some individuals continue to fall victim to it, due to economic hardship. The minister highlighted that among the 86 identified individuals—82 men and 4 women—the lack of govt documents was a barrier to accessing benefits. "To address this, the district administration is providing these individuals with critical documents, including Aadhaar cards, so that they can avail benefits of the govt schemes and lead dignified, self-reliant lives. Health check-ups are also being conducted as part of the initiative," he said. Maddur MLA KM Uday detailed the documents being provided, which include Aadhaar cards, caste and income certificates, ration cards, voter IDs, personal bank savings accounts, pensions under various schemes, Ayushman Bharat health cards, health insurance (PMJJBY, PMSBY), e-shram cards, UDID cards, Bhagyalakshmi scheme benefits, and MGNREGA job cards. These documents aim to empower former bonded labourers to live independently. ZP CEO KR Nandini stated that under the 'Sanjivini' campaign, eligible women from these families are being integrated into self-help groups under the NRLM scheme to access benefits and achieve self-reliance. Additionally, the RSETI programme is providing vocational training to eligible youth from these families to enhance their employability. "Under the 'e-swattu' and 'my identity' campaigns, the district achieved a milestone by providing over 49 e-property documents, 172 e-shram cards, more than 180 self-help group registrations, 10 caste and income certificates, and over 180 PMJJBY/PMSBY and UDID cards, along with MGNREGA benefits, to support the self-respect and livelihoods of former bonded labourers and their families. Additionally, the Bharatinagar GP is distributing free solar lights and sewing machines to these families to further aid their rehabilitation," she explained.

Arrest of Coimbatore bomb blast accused: ATS team conducts house search in Karnataka
COIMBATORE: Following the arrest of Coimbatore serial bomb blast case accused A Sadiq alias Tailor Raja,50, a team from the Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) here conducted a house search at Vijayapura in Karnataka on Monday. According to sources, the ATS team seized valid documents including Aadhaar card, PAN card, and driving licence of Sadiq Raja, who had changed his name to Shahjahan Shaik. "He supplied the IED bombs to the designated Al-Umma cadres in February 1998. After escaping from Coimbatore, he moved to Cholapur in Uttar Pradesh. Later, he relocated to Hubballi in Karnataka where he worked as a tailor and changed his name to Shajahan Makkandar. There, he married and had three children. He subsequently moved to Vijayapura in Karnataka where he ran a chilli business under the name Shahjahan Shaik," said a source. Sadiq alias Tailor Raja, who had been evading arrest for 27 years, was apprehended by the Coimbatore city police from Vijayapura on July 9. He was later handed over to the ATS, Coimbatore, which took him into custody for five days. "He confessed to his role in three murders and his involvement in the 1998 Coimbatore serial blast," said a senior police officer. After five days in custody, he was produced before the judicial magistrate court-V on Monday evening and was remanded in judicial custody until July 24. Sources confirmed that he had not been involved in any terror activities since the 1998 Coimbatore car blast, focusing entirely on his family life. "He was shocked when the police traced him after 27 years. He cried and told the police they could have arrested him earlier as he had built a good family life. He had purchased a plot in Vijayapura where he planned to construct a house," said a source. He had also created a Facebook account under the name 'Shahjahan Shaik,' believing that the police wouldn't be able to trace him through social media due to his name change from Sadiq alias Tailor Raja.
