China builds portable neutron gun powered by hydrogen-lithium nuclear reaction
Researchers from
China 's northwestern military-industrial hub have achieved controlled nuclear reactions between hydrogen and lithium in a compact device for the first time.

The feat marks a significant breakthrough in neutron generation technology with implications for
scientific , industrial and
defence applications.
Unlike previous designs requiring massive accelerators, this powerful but portable particle gun harnesses a novel electromagnetic technique to smash hydrogen protons into lithium atoms to achieve nuclear fusion with unprecedented efficiency, producing a nail-size beam with 10 billion fast neutrons generated per second.

Neutrons are tiny particles inside atoms, with no electric charge. Their neutrality lets them slip through materials like an 'atomic flashlight'.

Chinese chipmaker Sophgo has adapted its compute card to power DeepSeek 's reasoning model, underscoring growing efforts by local firms to develop home-grown artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure and reduce dependence on foreign chips amid tightening US export controls. Sophgo's SC11 FP300 compute card successfully passed verification, showing stable and effective performance in executing the reasoning tasks of DeepSeek's R1 model in tests conducted by the China Telecommunication Technology Labs (CTTL), the company said in a statement on Monday. A compute card is a compact module that integrates a processor, memory and other essential components needed for computing tasks, often used in applications like AI. CTTL is a research laboratory under the China Academy of Information and Communications Technology, an organisation affiliated with the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology. Play The verification marked a milestone for Sophgo, affirming that its compute card supported domestic AI models in alignment with Beijing's initiative to bolster its leading AI systems, such as the DeepSeek models, with self-developed infrastructure, the chipmaker said. Sophgo attributed the progress to several innovations in the FP300 compute card, which was released last year. In particular, it features 256 gigabytes of high-bandwidth memory and offers up to 1.1 terabytes per second of memory bandwidth, enabling faster data transfer during model training and execution.

Age-related hearing loss linked to protein deficiency, study finds
Scientists have discovered a key mechanism behind age-related hearing loss , and they say a common oral medication could delay its progression. In a study of crab-eating macaques, the team from China and the United States found that a gradual deficiency in a protein vital to receptor cells in the ear was a characteristic of cochlear ageing in primates. The researchers also found that it was possible to slow down age-related hearing loss in the monkeys by using a common diabetes medication called metformin, which they said had potential as a clinical treatment for the condition. 'Our study provides an in-depth characterisation of cellular and molecular ageing patterns in primate cochleae at an unprecedented single-cell resolution,' the team said in a paper published in the peer-reviewed journal Nature Aging on June 20. 'These findings lay the foundation for the development of new treatments for presbycusis and provide the possibility of personalised medicine,' said study author Wang Si, a professor at the Capital Medical University-affiliated Xuanwu Hospital in Beijing.
