'Nothing wrong has happened': Akal Takht head granthi on influencer killing

In the Sikh religious hierarchy, the head granthi holds the second-most important position after the jathedar. While the jathedar addresses broader issues affecting the community, the head granthi is responsible for upholding the 'maryada' (code of conduct) and managing rituals and ceremonies at the Akal Takht, the highest temporal seat of Sikhism.
Details of the murder and investigation
Kanchan Kumari's body was discovered on June 11 inside a car parked at Adesh University in Bathinda. Police said she had been strangled. The deceased was a resident of Lachman Colony in Ludhiana.
Two individuals — Jaspreet Singh and Nimratit Singh — have been arrested in connection with the case. The prime accused, Amritpal Singh Mehron, is believed to have fled to the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
Bathinda Superintendent of Police Amneet Kondal said on Sunday that a lookout circular had been issued against Mehron, who hails from Moga. The 30-year-old is a self-proclaimed Sikh radical and heads an organisation called 'Qaum De Rakhe'.
Mehron has previously issued threats to at least two other women social media influencers in Punjab, according to the police. Authorities have since taken steps to block some of his social media accounts.
Accused posts video claiming responsibility
Following the murder, a video emerged online in which Mehron claimed that Kumari was killed due to her 'vulgar content' on social media. He acknowledged the arrest of two of his associates and issued a stern warning to other influencers sharing 'objectionable content'.
In the video, he also indirectly threatened another content creator, saying, 'It is not necessary that a body will be found every time,' referencing how Kumari's body was discovered in her car.
Amid the threats, Amritsar-based influencer Deepika Luthra has been placed under police protection. Luthra reportedly received similar threats from Mehron and his associates, prompting authorities to ensure her safety.

Godara gang seeks 5cr from BJP functionary
Jaipur: A local BJP functionary and businessman in Anupgarh came under threat after receiving a voice message on WhatsApp, allegedly from gangster Rohit Godara. The message, which followed an unanswered call Thursday, included a demand for extortion and issued a threat. An FIR in this regard was lodged Friday. According to sources, the Anupgarh-based BJP functionary, whose identity has been withheld, received a call from an unknown number around 8pm on Wednesday. When he did not answer, a WhatsApp voice message followed in which the caller identified himself as Rohit Godara and demanded Rs 5 crore while issuing threats. The next morning, he received another call from a foreign number. The leader informed the local police station, following which police provided him with security. Police teams were dispatched to the area and began reviewing CCTV footage from nearby locations. Recordings at hotels and roadside eateries were also checked, though no suspects have been identified so far. There was a series of threat calls in areas bordering Punjab, including Sriganganagar district, made by organised criminals or members of organised gangs, including one targeting another BJP functionary, Ashok Chandak. Earlier, a local real estate businessman was fired upon. Ashok Chandak, a businessman and BJP leader from Sriganganagar, received death threats allegedly from Rohit Godara after his business partner Ashish Gupta was shot at on June 17. Gupta survived the attack and is now under police protection. Chandak told the police that he and his son began receiving threats on June 20.

ED uncovers 100cr financialfraud in Jaipur-based company
Jaipur: The Enforcement Directorate (ED) Friday conducted raids at 12 locations across Jaipur, Tonk and Kota, uncovering a massive financial fraud exceeding Rs 100 crore by Debock Industries Ltd, a city-based group. The agency had investigated the company following a complaint by the Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi). During the raids, ED officials seized over Rs 70 lakh in cash, property documents. The group's eight luxury vehicles, including a Rolls Royce and a Bentley, are also being assessed. The operations targeted the premises of company owner Mukesh Manvir Singh and other key individuals allegedly involved in the scam, including Gaurav Jain and Jyoti Chaudhary. According to a senior ED official who spoke on condition of anonymity, the Jaipur-based company, which operates in agricultural equipment, hospitality services and mining sectors, allegedly created fake firms and appointed proxy directors between 2020 and 2023 to inflate their earnings and balance sheets. "This manipulation resulted in an extraordinary increase in the company's share price from Rs 8 to Rs 150 within six months during 2023," the ED official told TOI. The investigation revealed that the company manipulated the share through listing fictitious entities in the stock market. Sebi had initially filed a prosecution complaint against Debock Industries in Aug 2024, which led to the ED investigating the company for money laundering in March 2025. The probe will continue as ED processes the seized documents and assets. Investigators are currently reviewing monetary documentation, payment pathways and corporate hierarchies connected to the company and its related business units.
