Takht Patna Sahib declares Sukhbir Badal ‘Tankhayia' for defying summons
The five Singh Sahibs or head priests of the Takht Sri Patna Sahib, one of the five seats of temporal authority of Sikhism, on Saturday declared Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) president Sukhbir Singh Badal a 'Tankhayia'—guilty of violating Sikh religious conduct—for allegedly ignoring its summons and undermining its authority. In August last year, the Akal Takht Sahib had passed a similar verdict against the former Punjab deputy chief minister. 'This action has been taken in view of the events that began on May 21, 2025, when unauthorised and unconstitutional interference was carried out by the Jathedars of Akal Takht and Takht Sri Damdama Sahib, challenging the established norms, constitution, and authority of Takht Patna Sahib,' Takht Patna Sahib Jathedar Giani Baldev Singh said, announcing the decision. 'Sukhbir Badal was involved in influencing and interfering with the affairs of Takht Patna Sahib, particularly during a series of controversial decisions and actions surrounding the status of ex-Patna Sahib Jathedar Giani Ranjit Singh Gohar. Badal was given two opportunities to appear and present his position, but he failed to do so,' Baldev Singh said. 'Even after an extension of 20 days—reportedly granted at the request of Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) president Harjinder Singh Dhami—Badal did not comply,' he added. 'By repeatedly ignoring the summons and undermining the authority of Takht Patna Sahib, Sukhbir Singh Badal has violated the religious code. As a result, he is hereby declared Tankhayia,' Baldev Singh said. In August 2024, the Akal Takht Sahib had passed a similar verdict against Badal. Then Jathedar Giani Raghbir Singh had said that Badal had harmed Sikh interests through decisions taken during his 2007–2017 tenure as deputy chief minister. 'Until he seeks forgiveness before Guru Granth Sahib in humility, the Tankhayia status shall remain,' the Singh Sahibs had said. In December 2024, the Akal Takht hosted a gathering of the five Singh Sahibs to revisit Badal's previous 'tankhah', the punishment for violating the Sikh religious code. At that time, he reportedly admitted to 'all mistakes' made during his government and was assigned religious punishment, which included performing various sevas (voluntary services) at the Takhts, such as guarding the gates, washing utensils, and listening to kirtan (devotional singing). The present dispute stems from a controversial May 21 decision by the Punjab-based Takhts—Akal Takht, Takht Damdama Sahib, and Takht Keshgarh Sahib—to lift the excommunication of Giani Ranjit Singh Gohar and simultaneously impose sanctions on the current Patna Sahib Jathedar Giani Baldev Singh and priest Gurdial Singh. In response, Takht Patna Sahib retaliated by declaring both Giani Kuldeep Singh Gargaj (acting Jathedar of Akal Takht) and Giani Tek Singh Dhanaula (Takht Damdama Sahib) as 'Tankhayia'. The Takht also summoned Sukhbir Singh Badal, alleging that he played a role in orchestrating the interventions against Patna Sahib's authority. With Badal's continued absence, Saturday's announcement marks a formal escalation in the clash between Sikh religious authorities and political figures, underscoring ongoing tensions between various Takhts and the political leadership of SAD.

'Nothing wrong has happened': Akal Takht head granthi on influencer killing
Giani Malkit Singh, head granthi of the Akal Takht Sahib, on Monday sparked outrage by defending the recent killing of social media influencer Kanchan Kumari, also known as 'Kamal Kaur Bhabhi'. Singh described the act as 'appropriate', accusing the influencer of promoting obscenity. 'We should not listen to vulgar songs... This kind of treatment should be meted out to those who indulge in spreading vulgarity and defaming Sikh community. Details of the murder and investigation Kanchan Kumari's body was discovered on June 11 inside a car parked at Adesh University in Bathinda. Police said she had been strangled. The deceased was a resident of Lachman Colony in Ludhiana. Two individuals — Jaspreet Singh and Nimratit Singh — have been arrested in connection with the case. The prime accused, Amritpal Singh Mehron, is believed to have fled to the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Bathinda Superintendent of Police Amneet Kondal said on Sunday that a lookout circular had been issued against Mehron, who hails from Moga. The 30-year-old is a self-proclaimed Sikh radical and heads an organisation called 'Qaum De Rakhe'. Mehron has previously issued threats to at least two other women social media influencers in Punjab, according to the police. Authorities have since taken steps to block some of his social media accounts. Accused posts video claiming responsibility Following the murder, a video emerged online in which Mehron claimed that Kumari was killed due to her 'vulgar content' on social media. He acknowledged the arrest of two of his associates and issued a stern warning to other influencers sharing 'objectionable content'. In the video, he also indirectly threatened another content creator, saying, 'It is not necessary that a body will be found every time,' referencing how Kumari's body was discovered in her car. Amid the threats, Amritsar-based influencer Deepika Luthra has been placed under police protection. Luthra reportedly received similar threats from Mehron and his associates, prompting authorities to ensure her safety.

Nothing wrong: Akal Takht head granthi justifies Punjab YouTuber's murder
The head granthi of Akal Takht Sahib, Giani Malkit Singh, on Tuesday said that those who defame religions by indulging in vulgarity should face consequences, while commenting on the recent murder of popular YouTuber Kanchan Kumari. The 27-year-old influencer, who was also known as Kamal Kaur or 'Queen', was found dead inside a parked car at a medical college campus in Bathinda on the morning of June Guru has always given a message to stay away from vulgarity and such songs, regardless of their religion - Hindu, Sikh or Muslim. According to a preliminary investigation, the crime may not have occurred at the university, and it was suspected that the influencer was killed elsewhere. She was possibly strangled and then her body was put inside the car, which was later abandoned at the parking lot of the university. The number plate on the car was found to be have been investigating possible links to a prior threat that Kumari received in October last year from Canada-based designated terrorist Arsh Dalla. He had reportedly warned the influencer against posting "inappropriate" videos earlier told India Today that while the threat was being taken seriously, all other angles were also being examined. Religious row erupts between Akal Takht, Takht Patna Sahib, SGPC urges mutual dialogue for resolution
CHANDIGARH: A religious dispute has escalated between the Akal Takht, the highest temporal seat of Sikhs, and Takht Patna Sahib, after the Panj Pyare (five beloved ones) of Takht Patna Sahib defied a decree issued by the Akal Takht. They declared its acting jathedar Giani Kuldeep Singh Gargaj and Takht Damdama Sahib head Tek Singh Dhanaula as 'tankhaiya' (guilty of religious misconduct) for actions allegedly hurting the sanctity and dignity of Takht Patna Sahib. In response, the Akal Takht Secretariat today ordered the Takht Patna Sahib management to withdraw this decision or face stern action. The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) has stepped in, stating that internal differences among Sikh supreme institutions are not in the interest of the Panth (community), and that mutual dialogue is the best path forward. A statement issued by the Akal Takht Secretariat reads, 'According to Sikh Rehat Maryada, Akal Takht Sahib is the highest among the five Takhts, and its decisions and orders are binding on all Takht Sahibs and the entire Sikh community. No group of Panj Pyaras from any Takht Sahib has the authority to question the supremacy of Akal Takht Sahib.' 'Takht Patna Sahib can take decisions related to local existing maryada, rituals and doctrines, but Akal Takht Sahib has full authority to deliberate on disputes related to religious matters and its opinion and decisions are considered final,' the statement further said. The Panj Pyare of Takht Patna Sahib yesterday held the temporal heads of Akal Takht Giani Gargaj and Damdama Sahib Tek Singh guilty of 'religious misconduct' and also summoned Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) president Sukhbir Singh Badal for allegedly meddling in Takht affairs. The Takht Patna Sahib issued this strong reaction after five Sikh priests, including Gargaj and Singh, had summoned the entire management panel of the Patna Sahib shrine over 'non-compliance' of earlier orders from the Akal Takht.

Akal Takht Sahib removes ban on Sikh preacher Ranjit Dhadrianwale after he apologises for ‘misinterpreting Gurbani'
Sri Akal Takht Sahib, the supreme temporal seat of the Sikhs, has lifted the ban on preacher Ranjit Singh Dhadrianwale over allegations of misinterpreting the Gurbani. Dhadrianwale, who is considered to be the archrival of Damdami Taksal head Harnam Singh Dhuma, appeared before the five Sikh Jathedars at Sri Akal Takht Sahib on Wednesday and sought forgiveness for his mistakes. Accepting his apology, the jathedars removed the five-year-old ban on his religious congregations. Last week, the Special Investigation Team (SIT) tasked with looking into a rape-murder case in Patiala, had recommended that the FIR against Dhadrianwale, registered in December last year, be cancelled since it could not find anything to substantiate the allegations. Lifting of the ban against Dhadrianwale comes at a time when Dhuma has turned against the Shiromani Akali Dal (Badal) and the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC). Dhuma wants the SGPC to remove Akal Takht Sahib's acting Jathedar, Giani Kuldeep Singh Gargaj, who was instrumental in making Dhadrianwale appear before the Akal Takht Sahib seeking forgiveness. Dhuma has been close to the BJP in recent years, especially since the SAD(B) snapped political ties with the longtime ally. The ban on Ranjit Dhadrianwale In 2019, the Akal Takht formed a five-member committee to probe the allegations against preacher Ranjit Singh Dhadrianwale for allegedly misinterpreting the Gurbani (hymns in the Guru Granth Sahib) and insulting Sikh customs. On August 24, 2020, the Akal Takht asked the Sikh community to maintain distance from Dhadrianwale until he issued a clarification on the allegations and apologised for it. The ban was viewed as a continuation of the issues between the preacher and Dhuma. A statement by then Jathedar Giani Harpreet Singh said, 'The committee has found that Dhadrianwale is guilty of making false statements regarding Sikh rituals and customs, and he is also not ready to appear to clarify the allegations against him. So, all Sikhs are advised against inviting him to any religious congregation. No Sikh should listen to Dhadrianwale, or watch, or forward his videos. Further action can be taken against Dhadrianwale if he doesn't correct his path.' A similar order was issued by the Sikh Jathedars for the preacher's companion Harvinder Singh. Dhadrianwale had then said that he was ready to give all the answers live in a televised debate, which the Akal Takht Jathedar saw as a challenge to its authority. Dhadrianwale, however, did not face any harsh punishment from the Akal Takht Sahib for his alleged religious misconduct, but was asked to offer karah parshad (sacred food offering) worth Rs 501 at the Akal Takht Sahib and resume his religious preaching activities. The issue between Harnam Dhuma and Ranjit Dhadarianwale On May 17, 2016, Dhadrianwale was attacked near Barewal village in Ludhiana. Bhupinder Singh Khasi Kalan, who was travelling with him, was shot dead in the attack. The Sikh seminary, Damdami Taksal, later admitted that the Ludhiana police had booked its men and vehicles in connection with the attack. At the time of the attack, Damdami Taksal head Harnam Singh Dhuma had been politically supporting the SAD(B) for 10 years under the banner of the Sant Samaj. Dhadrianwale, however, never had any links to the SAD(B) but was close to Congress leaders in Punjab. At his religious congregations during the Akali Dal's rule, Dhadrianwale had started criticising the incumbent political establishment in the state over various issues, without naming the SAD(B). His issues with the SAD(B), however, peaked over the incident involving the desecration of the Guru Granth Sahib in Bargari village of Faridkot in 2015. Along with another Sikh preacher, Panthpreet Singh, Dhadrianwale sat on a dharna, which led to protests across the state, including the killing of two Sikh protesters in police firing in Behbal Kalan. They repeatedly expressed anger against the state government for failing to arrest the culprits. Dhadrianwale also used his religious congregations to lead the attack on the government. Over the years, Dhadrianwale also began criticising a large section of the Sant Samaj for alleged orthodox practices and for encouraging the culture of godmen in Punjab. He also flayed the Sant Samaj for its passive role while the state was simmering with protests against the desecration incidents. Besides heading the Damdami Taksal, Harnam Singh Dhuma is also the president of the Sant Samaj. Interestingly, Dhadrianwale had also faced criticism for alleged orthodox practices and for acting as a godman during the initial years of his rise. Famous Punjabi singer Babbu Maan had written a song about the godmen culture in Punjab, following which Dhadrianwale criticised the vocalist for targeting him in the popular song. But later, Dhadrianwale gradually shunned the alleged orthodox practices, changed his ways, and gave up the heavy security and red beacon. He also stopped having armed bodyguards. He began requesting his followers not to call him 'Sant' or 'Baba', but just 'brother'. These changes enabled him to take on Sant Samaj leaders for allegedly enjoying a luxurious 'godmen lifestyle', and he continued to criticise them in his religious congregations. His videos often go viral on social media. He had once even referred to Dhuma as a 'sarkari sant (government-sponsored preacher)'.
