Texas Governor Greg Abbott acknowledged that the summer camp, which had about 750 girls at the time floodwaters hit, was 'horrendously ravaged in ways unlike I've seen in any natural disaster'.

"The height the rushing water reached to the top of the cabins was shocking," he said in a post on X, platform formerly known as Twitter.
However, Kandiss Taylor said she believes this is 'fake weather'.
'FAKE WEATHER. REAL DAMAGE. Hurricane Helene left me powerless for 16 days & caused $57K in damage. This isn't just 'climate change.' It's cloud seeding, geoengineering, & manipulation. If fake weather causes real tragedy, that's murder. Pray. Prepare. Question the narrative,' she claimed.
When Taylor admitted that tragedy had struck Texas, one of her followers questioned whether she was walking back out of her earlier claims.
'I'm not walking back a thing. No one can control the way you raging liberals twist words. Brainwashed zombies," the Trump loyalist said.
Her comments sparked severe backlash. 'Do your job Georgia… Is this the best you have got?' attorney Tracey Gallagher tweeted.

'Hey Texas. What do you think of this? She's running for congress as a Republican? Any thoughts?' former Rep Adam Kinzinger said.

Illinois Tech's Mumbai campus aims for 300-student inaugural batch in 2026
US-based Illinois Institute of Technology (Illinois Tech) is beginning preparations for opening its Mumbai campus in fall next year with an initial intake of around 300 students, Raj Echambadi, president, Illinois Tech, told Business Standard in a video interview. 'The institute is expecting to begin site exploration, and recruitment of faculty and staff in the next two-to-three months, so that active recruitment of students can start for an intake in the next fall,' Echambadi added. Likening its upcoming Mumbai campus to a node in Illinois Tech's overall network, he said that many American students will get opportunities to study in India for a semester or a year, whereas many Indian students can go to the Chicago campus in exchange programmes. Key challenges for the institute could be the US administration's recent rules mandating social media vetting for student visa appointments, and President Donald Trump's recent run-ins with educational institutions. Calling it a short-term speed bump, Echambadi said there are not going to be many impediments, even for Indian students who come and study in the Chicago campus. Almost 20 per cent of the students in Illinois Tech's undergraduate (UG) and graduate programs are foreign students, of which close to 5-8 per cent are from India. 'There is anxiety among students and parents due to word of mouth. While I think there is going to be a very short-term dip in terms of student interest, there is no certainty that it is going to have a major impact in the long term,' he added. While at the Mumbai campus the institute will offer both UG and graduate degrees, most of its courses will focus on science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Addressing concerns over fees, the institute said that while its tuition rates are still being finalised, they are looking at a cost range that would be very reasonable for the Indian market. 'Comparing it to the US cost, you are talking about one-third or a little over one-third of the cost that the students would pay at our India campus,' he said. Estimated tuition rates for an UG student at Illinois Tech is $51,648, according to the institution's website. Other additions such as housing, food, books, and transportation can inflate that bill to an estimated range of $64,894-77,624, depending on whether the student is living on or off campus. Echambadi added that the institute is working with its alumni network, and government scholarships to make affordability one of the key factors. 'Owing to the size of our Indian alumni, and because of the CSR (corporate social responsibility) rules in India, we are committed to fundraising in India in order to ensure that no qualified student in the country is ever turned away because of lack of access to resources,' he said. Illinois Tech's entry into India comes two years after the University Grants Commission (UGC) released rules facilitating the entry of foreign higher education institutions (HEIs) into the country as part of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 reforms. Under these regulations, foreign institutions seeking to establish campuses in India must rank within the top 500 globally — either overall or in specific subject areas — and demonstrate outstanding expertise in their fields, subject to UGC approval. While around 10-12 foreign HEIs, mostly British and Australian, have got letters of intent (LoIs) from the Union education ministry, Illinois Tech is currently the only American university to announce a campus in India. Speaking on the traction within US HEIs, Echambadi said that there is a lot of interest from American universities to come to India. 'We have had many calls from American universities asking us about the process we followed,' he added.

Revised Maharashtra special public security Bill likely to be tabled in Assembly today
The Maharashtra government is likely to introduce a revised draft of the special public security Bill aimed at curbing 'left-wing extremist organisations' in the Assembly on Thursday. State Revenue Minister Chandrashekar Bawankule tabled the report of the joint select committee on the Bill on Wednesday. 'We have brought clarity to the Bill, which aims to tackle illegal activities of extreme left-minded individuals and groups,' Mr. Bawankule told the House. The Maharashtra Special Public Security Bill, 2024 was introduced in the Winter Session of the Assembly in December 2024. The Bill was then referred to the joint select committee for scrutiny. The committee, comprising 14 MLAs and seven MLCs, included prominent Opposition leaders such as Jitendra Awhad, Nana Patole, Jayant Patil, Vijay Waddettiwar, and Satej Bunty Patil. 'The report, with amendments to the original Bill, was agreed upon unanimously. There is not a single dissent note by any of the Opposition members,' a government source told The Hindu. Mr. Bawankule, who headed the committee, said the panel met five times and reviewed 12,500 suggestions from the public. He said the suggestions of the Opposition members in the committee were also accepted. 'Targets direct funding' A senior Minister, who was part of the committee, clarified that the revised Bill targets direct funding for 'left-wing groups'. 'No political party or political organisations, no morchas, or protest marches will come under its ambit. The Bill has to do with direct funding for promoting 'left-wing extremist organisations',' the Minister said. The Bill includes a provision to set up an 'Advisory Board' headed by a sitting or retired High Court Chief Justice, with District Magistrates or High Court government pleaders as its members, Mr. Bawankule said. The Bill mandates that investigations under it be conducted by an officer not below the rank of Deputy Superintendent. The Revenue Minister said the government aims to pass the Bill to prevent youth from being influenced by the Naxalite movement. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis had reviewed the draft of the Bill on Monday, an official said.

Preliminary report on Air India plane crash likely to be released this week, AAIB officials tell parliamentary panel
New Delhi [India], July 9 (ANI): Senior officials of the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) told a parliamentary panel on Wednesday that the preliminary report on the plane crash in Ahmedabad is likely to be placed in the public domain in the next few days, sources said. Parliament's Standing Committee on Transport, Tourism and Culture met here on Wednesday with members making queries and seeking clarifications on the issue of safety and aircraft maintenance. The members, sources said, talked about the vast expansion of air sector in India, the projected growth and the need to expand the maintenance facilities. Several members mentioned the aircraft crash in Ahmedabad on June 12 last month in which over 250 people were killed. The Air India Flight AI-171, a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, bound for London, crashed shortly after takeoff from Ahmedabad's Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport. Sources stated that AAIB officials informed the meeting that the preliminary report would be made public within 30 days of the tragic accident. AAIB officials are also learnt to have told the panel that the black box was intact and its data is being analysed. The agenda of parliamentary panel was to hear the Secretary, Ministry of Civil Aviation, on 'Overall review of safety in Civil Aviation Sector'. The meeting, which began at 11 am lasted till almost 6 pm, with senior officials of DGCA, AAI giving presentations. The panel is chaired by Janata Dal-United MP Sanjay Jha. Senior officials of Air India, Indigo, Akasa Air were among those present. On Tuesday, Members of Parliament's Public Accounts Committee (PAC) raised serious concerns over aviation safety following the Air India Flight AI-171 crash in Ahmedabad and the sudden surge in flight fares from Srinagar to other cities after the recent terror attack in Pahalgam, according to sources. The investigation is being led by the AAIB Director General and includes experts from the Indian Air Force, Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), and the US-based National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), which is the designated investigation body from the country of the aircraft's design. Aviation medicine and air traffic control experts are also part of the team. According to officials, this is the first time India is decoding black box data domestically. On June 25, the memory module was successfully accessed and its data was downloaded at the AAIB Lab, the official said. (ANI)
