Former Spanish PM Aznar reveals Chirac suggested ceding Ceuta and Melilla to Morocco

Ya Biladia day ago
Former Spanish Prime Minister José María Aznar has revealed that late French President Jacques Chirac once suggested handing over «Ceuta, Melilla, and Western Sahara to Morocco» during the Perejil Island crisis in July 2002.
The revelation appears in the recently released documentary Perejil Island, The War That Never Was, which revisits the tense standoff between Spain and Morocco over control of the small, uninhabited islet.
According to Spanish media reports, Aznar confirms in the film that France had clearly aligned itself with Morocco at the time. «Chirac told me the best thing would be to hand over Ceuta, Melilla, and Western Sahara», he recalls, noting that he categorically rejected the idea, calling it an unacceptable interference in Spain's strategic foreign policy. «I replied, no—under no circumstances», Aznar adds.
The Perejil Island crisis broke out on July 11, 2002, and triggered ten days of heightened tension between the two countries. The standoff eventually ended following complex diplomatic negotiations involving the European Union, NATO, the United States, and France.

French-Moroccan student faces charges for hacking Paris-Dauphine profiles with Palestinian flag

Motawassim L., a 22-year-old French-Moroccan computer science master's student at Paris-Dauphine University, is facing charges for altering the intranet profiles of 18 students on October 7, 2024. He allegedly replaced their profile photos with a Palestinian flag and the slogan «Free Palestine». According to Le Monde, the cyberattack, carried out from his family home in Saint-Denis, targeted students identified as members of the Dauphine chapter of the Union of Jewish Students (UEJF). At a court hearing on Friday, July 11, the public prosecutor requested a five-month suspended prison sentence and mandatory participation in a citizenship program at the Shoah Memorial. While the main charge is «fraudulent modification of data», civil parties—including LICRA and the Union of Jewish Students of France—have called for the act to be qualified with the aggravating circumstance of antisemitism. They argue that both the selection of targets and the timing point to a deliberate attack based on religious affiliation. Motawassim L. denies any antisemitic intent. He described his actions as a political statement made «in a moment of emotion… in reaction to the humanitarian crisis in Gaza», and insisted it was not driven by hate. «It was more of a political act, in the context of student protests», he said, explaining that he selected the profiles based on visible interactions on UEJF's Instagram page. His defense team argued that emotional context should not distort the legal interpretation of the incident. His lawyer, Vincent Brengarth, cautioned against framing the case as overly symbolic. «It is not this court's role to make up for the events of October 7», he said, as reported by Le Parisien.

Spain : The Association of Moroccan Workers criticizes Vox's anti-migrant rhetoric

The Association of Moroccan Workers and Immigrants in Spain (ATIM) has denounced what it calls «hypocritical demagoguery» in response to recent comments by the far-right party Vox regarding the mass expulsion of migrants. In a statement sent to Yabiladi on Friday, the NGO strongly rejected remarks made by Vox spokesperson Rocío de Meer. For several days, the political figure has faced backlash over her xenophobic and ambiguous comments. Speaking at a press conference at Vox's headquarters, she appeared to endorse a version of the «Great Replacement» theory in Spain. De Meer spoke of expelling eight million immigrants and their children in order to «survive as a people». Since then, Vox has scrambled to contain the fallout, even going as far as blaming the Spanish press for misrepresenting her words. Against this backdrop, ATIM emphasized the public and solemn nature of its response, accusing the party of «seeking media attention, stoking controversy, and provoking outrage—even violence». The NGO added that Vox «fails to consider the consequences» of its rhetoric, «blinded by its obsession with publicity and its strategy of cultivating rejection through stigmatization». «They are exploiting the frustration generated by a failing neoliberal system, manufacturing an enemy—even a fictitious one—and scapegoating migrants to deflect responsibility for this failure», ATIM continued. In equally forceful terms, the NGO pointed to the «ignorance» displayed by Vox members. «If they had any sense of history, they would recognize the disastrous consequences of the expulsion of the Moriscos between 1609 and 1613. The economic damage today would be just as severe», ATIM warned. «Our association rises today to oppose your empty, incoherent, and deceptive discourse, lacking substance and utterly incapable of proposing any real economic or social alternatives for the future», the statement continued. «Your outbursts, your racist slogans, your xenophobia, your sexism, your intolerance—they serve no purpose. Your fascist ambitions to eliminate everyone who is different from you or who disagrees with you are equally futile», it added.
