A MAJOR warning has been issued to parents over illegal sunglasses sold in the UK that are harmful to children.
A third of the kids' sunglasses bought from online marketplaces including Amazon, AliExpress, eBay and Temu can't provide the eye protection required and are unsafe for children to wear, new research revealed.

Researchers found the lenses on the Cute Cat Kids' Sunglasses, bought from Amazon for £1.59, provide hardly any eye protection
This can cause major eye problems for children later in life.
Consumer watchdog Which? bought 20 pairs of sunglasses from six online marketplaces.
It then put them through standard lab-based tests and stated that "UV test and compliance failures combined mean that none of the 20 pairs of sunglasses we tested from online marketplaces can be sold legally in the UK".
The watchdog discovered two pairs let through too much ultraviolet light (UV), which could damage a child's eyes.
On five pairs – including one with dangerously low UV protection – the watchdog found significant differences between the amount of protection provided by one lens compared to the other.
On its website, Which? reported: "Good glasses have the same level of protection across both lenses.
"And all the kids' sunglasses bought from marketplaces were missing key information, labels and markings required for them to be sold in the UK legally."

Researchers added: "The latest in our series of investigations into unsafe products shows why more needs to be done to prevent their sale through online marketplaces.
"The Government's Product Regulation and Metrology Bill presents a once-in-a-generation opportunity to protect online shoppers and to give online marketplaces clear legal responsibilities to keep dangerous products off their sites."
Which? added that "the most important thing" that a pair of kids' sunglasses can do is to protect young and still-developing eyes from the harmful effects of the sun's ultraviolet (UV) rays.
It went on to say: "But worryingly, two pairs bought from Amazon and eBay failed to effectively filter the sun's rays, despite both claiming to provide sufficient UV protection."
"Children are exposed to more UV than adults, their eyes are still developing, and this increases the risk of UV damage.
"Overexposure to UV over many years can lead to cataracts and macular degeneration."
Amazon, eBay, AliExpress and Temu were approached for comment.
Ones to look out for
Of all the sunglasses the watchdog tested, the ones they were most concerned about were the first two in this list: Cute Cat Kids' Sunglasses UV Protection, which cost £1.59 (bought from Amazon). Researchers noted the lenses let through between 19 and 22 times too much UVB, which means they're providing hardly any eye protection.
Classic Vintage Holiday Sunglasses UV400 £3.99. Researchers note that since their investigation began, this pair of glasses is no longer listed by the seller. But the eBay store they bought them from lists another 34 different models and claims more than 5,000 sales of sunglasses.
Others tested by Which? included a heart-shaped pair of glasses bought from a seller on eBay (Retro Love Heart shape UV400, £2.83). The lenses aren't consistent in the way they filter UV.
(Retro Love Heart shape UV400, £2.83). The lenses aren't consistent in the way they filter UV. Another heart-shaped pair of glasses from eBay (Heart Pattern UV400, £5.28) has exactly the same problem. One lens filters more UV than the other. As light doesn't pass through the lenses evenly, this could lead make it uncomfortable for a child wearing them.

A pair of kids' aviators on AliExpress (New fashion Pilot sunglasses for kids children, £1.16) were equally problematic. Researchers tested them twice, and they failed both times as the lenses let through different levels of UV.

A woman also suffered repeated physical and sexual violence at his hands. James was today sentenced at the High Court in Glasgow. He had been due to stand trial, but instead pleaded guilty to a total of 12 charges, including raping both victims. The crimes occurred in a number of locations including Gourock in Inverclyde between 2015 and 2022. James, of Fort William in the Highlands, raped the child which also involved him taking photos and making video recordings of attacks. He further abused her while she was asleep. The court heard James even concealed cameras in rooms capturing the unwitting youngster as she was getting dressed. The woman meantime was the victim of a similar horror ordeal. This included raping her after forcing her over the bonnet of a car. Judge David Young KC said a background assessment had concluded James was a "dangerous individual" who continued to pose a risk to others. He told James: "Both victims have lodged impact statements - it is plain your actions had an effect on their lives which can be described as devastating. "The girl spoke of closing down, feeling helpless and hopeless. The ability to form relationships has been fractured. "The woman has had her life torn apart. "You accept the offences against the child, but are not able to explain the behaviour. "You report that she never said 'no', but this comment about a child raises concerns in itself. "Although you have pled guilty, you say the behaviour against the woman was consensual." James was further put on the sex offenders list. He has also been banned from approaching or contacting the victims - both for an indefinite period. James will also be supervised for a further four years on his release.

Scots killer who stabbed man in heart in love row to go before parole board

The jealous killer stabbed another man through the heart believing he had sex with his girlfriend. A Scots killer who fatally stabbed a young man in the heart believing he slept with his girlfriend is set to go before the parole board again today. ‌ On June 4 2019, Robbie Smullen, then aged 23, was convicted of a reduced charge of culpable homicide at Edinburgh High Court after he plunged a knife into Barry Dixon, 22, killing him at a flat in Wallace Court, Perth. He was sentenced to nine years and three months imprisonment. ‌ Just six years on, today's appearance before the parole board will be Smullen's second after being denied release in October last year, the Courier reports. ‌ He was granted temporary release by the Scottish Prison Service the following month - which means he was allowed unescorted day outings from jail. The family of Barry Dixon have been broken since his death with his aunt Jade Taylor, who helped raise Barry after his parents died, spoking to the Record in the days following the sentence. ‌ She said: 'Days on, we are still in utter disbelief and we are hoping for news that the Crown Office will appeal this unduly lenient sentence." "It's never going to be okay that Barry isn't here with us. The pain of missing him and way his life was taken is intolerable. "We are alive but we are no longer living. It's never going to be okay that he isn't here and we will never get over it. ‌ "I just hope Barry always knew how loved he was and that he will never be forgotten." Barry was knifed in the chest after going back to the flat with Smullen's 'on/off' partner Shannon Beattie. Smullen was on three different bail orders at the time. ‌ During the trial, Smullen claimed the fatal injury was inflicted when Barry pulled a knife on him and they both 'tripped and fell' during a struggle over the weapon. However, the jury rejected his defence of self-defence and returned a majority verdict of culpable homicide. Judge Lady Carmichael said the killer had been 'disinhibited by alcohol and the effects of sexual jealously' and no sentence imposed could 'repair or lessen the harm done to the family of Barry Dixon'. Smullen's mother Mary Smullen had been on trial alongside him and pleaded guilty to attempting to pervert the course of justice by pretending to police that Barry was stabbed by Ms Beattie. She was ordered to carry out 180 hours of unpaid work ‌ During the trial, Shannon Beattie told the court she witnessed Smullen stab Barry. She described meeting Barry in another woman's home on the evening of June 3 2019, and they ended up together in her flat where they kissed. Shannon said Smullen arrived home and branded her a 'f*****g s**g' with a fight breaking out between him and Barry before 'Robbie stabbed him in the chest'. ‌ Witness Brian Henderson said he'd been at his partner's home near Mary's Smullen's address when Robbie Smullen came to their door, saying: 'I think I've killed someone, I think I've killed someone.' Brian added: '(Robbie) was going on about the boy he killed saying, 'I'm glad I killed him, he's a d**k' or something to that effect.' Barry was taken to Ninewells Hospital, Dundee, but suffered a cardiac arrest and was pronounced dead at 5.53am. The Parole Board for Scotland has been contacted for comment.
