Trump warns he will take 'federal control' of Washington, DC as youth violence continues

President Donald Trump on Monday threatened to federalize Washington, D.C., in response to youth violence that is "totally out of control," calling for local minors and gang members over the age of 14 to be prosecuted as adults. In a post on Truth Social, Trump said local youth and gang members are "randomly attacking, mugging, maiming, and shooting innocent citizens, at the same time knowing that they will be almost immediately released." The president said it appears the suspects are "not afraid" of the police, "because they know nothing ever happens to them." Trump said D.C. laws must be changed to allow minors to be prosecuted as adults. "Washington, D.C., must be safe, clean, and beautiful for all Americans and, importantly, for the World to see," he wrote in the post. "If D.C. doesn't get its act together, and quickly, we will have no choice but to take Federal control of the City, and run this City how it should be run, and put criminals on notice that they're not going to get away with it anymore." Along with the post, Trump shared a photo of what appears to be a man bloodied on the street following an attack. "The most recent victim was beaten mercilessly by local thugs," Trump wrote. "… Perhaps it should have been done a long time ago, then this incredible young man, and so many others, would not have had to go through the horrors of Violent Crime. If this continues, I am going to exert my powers, and FEDERALIZE this City. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!" In July, congressional intern Eric Tarpinian-Jachym, 21, a 16-year-old boy and a woman were shot in what appeared to be a drive-by shooting. Tarpinian-Jachym later died. Metro Detroit man charged again, could face 30th retail fraud conviction

A Michigan man who has 29 previous convictions of retail fraud is facing charges for another case, according to the Macomb County Prosecutor's Office. Dwayne Effren Taylor, of Clinton Township, was arraigned on Tuesday in the 41B District Court for first-degree retail fraud and habitual offender-fourth offense. Prosecutors requested a $50,000 cash bond, a steel cuff GPS tether, for Taylor to have no contact with the store involved, and a substance abuse evaluation. His bond was set at $29,000 cash/surety. Prosecutors allege that on Monday, Aug. 4, Taylor was at a Target store on Gratiot Avenue in Clinton Township and attempted to leave the store with multiple items in a shopping cart without paying. The store's loss prevention team detained Taylor and recovered the items, with a total value of $900. "This defendant has been arrested for retail fraud an astonishing 30 times and is currently out on parole for the very same offense. His repeated disregard for the law shows a clear pattern of criminal behavior and a refusal to change course. Our office will be seeking significant consequences in this case. Retail theft is not a victimless crime; it harms businesses, workers, and communities. Chronic offenders must be held accountable," said Macomb County Prosecutor Peter Lucido in a statement. Taylor's next court hearing is on Aug. 18.

Mexican prosecutor killed in drive-by shooting caught on film

Mexico Crime Gun violence MediaFacebookTweetLink Follow A federal prosecutor in Mexico has been killed in a drive-by shooting that has shocked the nation after video footage of the attack circulated online. The footage shows the prosecutor sitting on a road in the border city of Reynosa, Tamaulipas state, shortly after his car has caught fire. A white vehicle then drives past and the sound of multiple gunshots rings out. The prosecutor falls to the ground and then lies motionless. It's not clear what caused the fire. The Mexican Attorney General's Office has identified the killed man as Ernesto Cuitláhuac Vásquez Reyna, who worked in the state of Tamaulipas. It said the attack on Monday was still being investigated, but preliminary information suggested it may have been linked to organized crime gangs who had been recently targeted by authorities. It pointed to the seizure by security forces of more than 1.8 million liters of stolen fuel in a bust last month as being among the main lines of investigation. Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said Tuesday that her security cabinet was in touch with state and federal prosecutors to 'do justice in this case.' In a post on X, the Tamaulipas Governor Américo Villarreal condemned the attack, expressed solidarity with the prosecutor's family and offered to help the 'the Attorney General's Office and the Government of Mexico in the search for justice and the construction of peace.' Reynosa is the most populated city in Tamaulipas with roughly 700,000 residents. It is located just across the Rio Grande from Hidalgo, Texas.
