Sabah Islamic Religious Affairs Department to introduce e-nikah in June

Kota Kinabalu: State Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Datuk Dr Mohd Ariffin Mohd Arif said online marriage registration (e-Nikah) will be introduced in June. The initiative by the Sabah Islamic Religious Affairs Department (Jheains) aims to streamline marriage-related procedures. 'This aligns with the Chief Minister's call for digitising public services, including religious matters, to enhance accessibility. Congratulations to Jheains for pioneering this effort, following their earlier introduction of online marriage certificates,' he said after officiating the Madani Youth Wellness Seminar (Mental, Physical and Spiritual) and Islamic Pre-Marriage Premier Course at Wisma Muis, here, Tuesday. Ariffin commended Jheains for organising the large-scale event, urging its expansion to other districts to educate youth and prospective couples. 'Such programs equip participants with essential knowledge for marital life,' he said. Mutiara GRS reaches out to the needy in Tawau

TAWAU: Mutiara Gagasan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) continued its series of welfare tours through the Ziarah Amal Tawau programme, reaching out to those in need in the district on Saturday. The programme, organised by the Welfare Bureau and the Visits Bureau of Mutiara GRS, with the delegation led by wife of the Chief Minister, Datin Seri Julia Salag, reached out to special needs children, single mothers, and special education students at several schools around Tawau. Advertisement Julia said the programme is a continuation of Mutiara GRS's year-round efforts to visit various districts and deliver direct assistance to communities in need. 'Last month we were in Nabawan, today (Saturday) in Tawau, and next month we will visit another interior area.' 'This is a special experience for us as we get to engage with special needs children and assist those in need,' she said. She hopes this effort will inspire other non-governmental organizations (NGOs) to also take an active role in advocating for community welfare. Advertisement Meanwhile, one of the aid recipients, Sumarti Calla, 53, from Kampung Ranggu, expressed relief at being selected, given the increasingly challenging cost of living. As a single mother, she said the financial and material assistance she received had been a great help in supporting her four children, including three who are still in school. She said that with the rising cost of living, many single mothers don't know where to begin, but she felt relieved and grateful to receive support from Datin Seri Julia and Mutiara GRS. 'I sell food, some days I earn RM100, other days less. This assistance has been a great help to me,' she said, holding back tears. Meanwhile, Rusia Mahmud, 58, from Kampung Sungai Gading, Wakuba, received the assistance on behalf of his mother, a single mother currently undergoing treatment for gallbladder swelling. Ringgit gains on weak US data, Fed rate cut expectations

Kuala Lumpur: The ringgit opened higher against the US dollar on Wednesday, supported by weaker United States (US) economic data that weighed on the greenback and prompted investors to reassess market sentiment, an economist said. At 8 am, the local note climbed to 4.2180/2315 against the greenback from Tuesday's close of 4.2260/2310. Advertisement Bank Muamalat Malaysia Bhd chief economist Dr Mohd Afzanizam Abdul Rashid told Bernama the weaker-than-expected US ISM Services Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI) reinforced expectations that the Federal Reserve may cut interest rates in September. 'Weaker US economic data, including last Friday's non-farm payrolls, has shifted the narrative. The likelihood of rate cuts is rising as policymakers seek to support growth,' he said. On the domestic front, Mohd Afzanizam noted that the ringgit had performed well against the US dollar but cautioned that some profit-taking may occur after its sharp gains over the past two days. 'We expect the ringgit to trade between RM4.22 and RM4.24 against the US dollar today,' he added. Advertisement The ringgit was also mostly higher against a basket of major and regional currencies in early trade. It strengthened against the Japanese yen to 2.8795/8889 from 2.8618/8654 on Tuesday and rose against the British pound to 5.6197/6377 from 5.6159/6226. However, it slipped against the euro to 4.8954/9110 from 4.8772/8830. The ringgit advanced against the Singapore dollar to 3.2841/2949 from 3.2793/2834 and appreciated against the Thai baht to 13.0747/1229 from 13.0408/0627. LDP slams PTPTN waiver tactic as

LDP warned that such populist pledges erode financial discipline, risk collapsing PTPTN's revolving fund, and promote strategic default among borrowers. The party also criticised the Sabah-targeted proposal as divisive and lacking a clear fiscal model. 'Education policy must be rooted in long-term fairness and fiscal responsibility not exploited for political gain,' the party said.
