Preston North End vs Plymouth Argyle LIVE: Championship latest score, goals and updates from fixture
An increasingly competitive second tier in English football remains an intense and exciting competition, with the prize of a place in the Premier League on offer at the end of the season.
Relegation from the top flight last term means Luton, Burnley and Sheffield United are all back in the second tier this term and will be expected to push for play-off spots again at least, but so too will Norwich City, an improving Coventry and beaten play-off finalists Leeds United. At the other end of the table, Wayne Rooney is aiming to revive Plymouth's fortunes after they narrowly avoided relegation last year, with Portsmouth and Derby the teams promoted from League One along with play-off final winners Oxford.

Martin Zubimendi reflects on Liverpool snub and decision to join Arsenal
New Arsenal signing Martin Zubimendi had the chance to join Liverpool last summer but looks back on making the best decision for him at the time. The 26-year-old signed for the Gunners from Real Sociedad earlier this month, completing a deal worth around £55m. The 19-cap Spain international has long been linked with a move to the Premier League and came very close to moving to Anfield a year ago. Liverpool agreed to meet the release clause in his contract at Real Sociedad, but a £51m deal did not go through as the midfielder chose to sign a new contract with the Basque club instead. A year on and he is a Premier League player with Arsenal, also turning down interest from Real Madrid this summer, and reflects on wanting to remain in San Sebastian and gain more experience before making a big move. Wake up to find news on your club in your inbox every morning with Metro's Football Newsletter. 'The first question I had to answer was whether I wanted to leave Real, and it wasn't the right time,' Zubimendi told BBC Sport. 'I felt that Real offered me more opportunities and that I still had a lot to learn, so staying at Real was the best decision for me.' Zubimendi admitted last year that he had some 'uncomfortable moments' during the transfer saga, but was comfortable with the decision he made. 'My philosophy is to do at home at all times what comes from within,' he told Noticias De Gipuzkoa. 'I went through uncomfortable moments. The best thing for me was to stay here and I am happy and at peace. Because of the press there is a lot of noise but in the end everything is easer than all that.' The classy midfielder is now training with his new teammates and getting ready for the Premier League season to get underway next month. He is already enjoying working under Mikel Arteta, who he identified as someone who would be beneficial to his game before joining Arsenal. 'I don't know what he saw in me, but I saw him as one of the top coaches in Europe,' he said. 'At the end of the day, I wanted a quality coach when I left Real Sociedad. 'I think I've found him. In the few days I've been here, I've seen how meticulous he is about every aspect of the game, so I think he's the one. 'He had a lot of opportunities to decide whether he wanted to come. The good news is that this club is amazing, and everybody wants to come to it. He left some very good opportunities to come to us. 'We are all very impressed with what we've seen in the last seven to ten days. Once you have the player daily there and you see his character, his personality, his intelligence, and how much he's going to bring to the team. I'm very excited about it.' 'I think I'm going to try to do things I didn't do before,' he said. 'Playing in that position, I'll try to bring balance and provide that passing outlet that I'm known for. 'Beyond that, I'm sure he'll ask me to do new things.' Arsenal take on AC Milan in a pre-season friendly at 12.30pm on Wednesday in Singapore, with Zubimendi set be involved. Jose Mourinho points finger at Sir Jim Ratcliffe as he gives brutal Man Utd verdict
Manchester United suffered their worst ever Premier League campaign in 2024-25 as they finished 15 and former coach Jose Mourinho has pointed the finger of blame at chief Sir Jim Ratcliffe Former Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho has taken aim at Sir Jim Ratcliffe, claiming he "doesn't have much experience in football" and insisting "a lot needs to change" at Old Trafford. United are still reeling from a turbulent season that saw them finish 15th in the Premier League table, their worst campaign in top flight history, as Ruben Amorim was unable to steady the ship after Erik ten Hag was sacked last year. The Red Devils lost a total of 18 games and they were also beaten 1-0 by Tottenham in the Europa League final, missing out on a final chance to claim Champions League football. Mourinho has experience of managing United during a difficult period after he was sacked in 2018 after picking up just 26 points from 17 games in the 2018-19 season. The 'Special One' did win two major trophies at United and also finished second in 2017-18 and suggests Ratcliffe's lack of footballing experience might hinder the club - in a subtle jab at the billionaire and the United hierarchy. Speaking to Portuguese outlet Record, he said: "Today, I think that with the change in ownership at the club, with an owner who doesn't have much experience in football but rather in sport... "What happened to Ruben, from being the manager of the worst Manchester United in Premier League history to having continuity and confidence to continue and be Ruben Amorim, is a sign that a lot needs to change." However, Mourinho believes current boss Amorim has "incredible potential" to be a success at Old Trafford and urged the club to keep backing him - and to allow him to do his work as he sees fit. "With that stability... We all agree that he's a manager with great potential and personality. I think he has incredible potential to do great work." Mourinho is now at Turkish club Fenerbahce, where he is hoping to win his first major since joining them last summer as he approaches his second season. Since leaving United, Mourinho had an unsuccessful spell at Tottenham, where he was sacked just days before the 2021 Carabao Cup final against Manchester City. He later won the UEFA Conference League with Roma before also being sacked by the Italian side last year. Amorim will be hoping for a much better second season with United as he prepares for a pre-season tour of the United States - where they will play West Ham, Bournemouth and Everton in the Premier League Summer Series. United have already made two high profile signings as they look to bounce back from their dreadful first campaign under Amorim after snapping up forwards Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo.
