Mhada gears up for tree plantation during Van Mahotsav
MUMBAI: The Maharashtra Housing Area and Development Authority (MHADA) will conduct a statewide tree plantation drive during Van Mahotsav Week, targeting the planting of 0.2 million saplings across Maharashtra. It also proposes to convert plots in Mumbai that cannot be developed into urban forests.
At a meeting of heads of department on Tuesday, Sanjeev Jaiswal, vice-president and chief executive officer, said that during Van Mahotsav Week, from July 1 to 7, various Mhada boards should engage in large-scale tree plantation programmes.
Jaiswal also told officers to identify plots in the Mumbai region where no construction or development is possible. He said these plots should be developed into dense urban forests using the Miyawaki method. This method is effective in increasing biodiversity by enabling the plantation of a large number of trees in smaller areas.
He said that Mhada's regional boards such as the Mumbai Housing Area Development Board (MHADB) and the Konkan Housing Board should also consider planting trees within the premises of housing colonies under their jurisdiction. Jaiswal set a target of 50,000 saplings for the MHADB and 25,000 saplings for the Konkan Housing Board. All saplings must be geo-tagged.
A circular mandating compensatory plantation wherever tree felling takes place under Mhada projects will soon be issued. Initially, this will be applicable to Mumbai and later extended to other regional boards.

BJP assures political representation to Pasmanda Muslims
1 2 Patna: BJP on Monday reiterated its commitment to equality, dialogue and development while working for the interest of Pasmanda Muslim community in the state. Addressing the members of Pasmanda Muslim community at the party headquarters here, BJP state president Dilip Kumar Jaiswal accused the RJD-Congress of always doing politics in the name of Muslims, but making no real efforts to uplift the Pasmanda Muslims in Bihar. Bihar BJP attempts to break RJD's Muslim votes through Pasmanda
Bihar unit of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Monday (June 30, 2025) organised a joining ceremony of Pasmanda community, a day after Muslims organisation led by Imarat-e-Shariah held a rally at Patna's Gandhi Maidan to protest against Waqf Act. Attacking the Opposition party, BJP state president Dilip Jaiswal said that in Bihar, politics has always been done in the name of Muslims, but no real efforts were ever made to uplift the Pasmanda Muslims. Ahead of the Assembly election, Mr. Jaiswal assured that the BJP will ensure political representation for the Pasmanda. The joining conference was inaugurated by Mr. Jaiswal and Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary. Among some of the most backward in terms of socio-economic indicators and severely under-represented in jobs, education and electoral politics, Pasmanda Muslims in Bihar constitute over 72% of the State's Muslim population and come under either the OBC or EBC categories. They comprise 29.9% of the Extremely Backward Classes (EBC) population in Bihar and over 12% of the State's entire population — making them an important part of the BJP's plans in the State to break the Rashtriya Janata Dal's (RJD) grip over the Muslim vote. While addressing the community members Mr. Jaiswal said that the unique characteristic of the BJP is its commitment of taking all religions, communities, and sections of society along. 'The party works with the slogan 'Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas, Sabka Vishwas'. Although politics has long been played in the name of Muslims, no genuine efforts were made to uplift the Pasmanda Muslims,'Mr. Jaiswal said. Bihar BJP president Dilip Jaiswal on Monday said that his party would ensure participation of ' Pasmanda Muslims ' in state politics in the coming future. The announcement to include the Pasmandas, who constitute over 70 per cent of the total Muslim population of Bihar, came ahead of the assembly polls in the state due later this year.
