CMC to plant 1.5 lakh saplings in July first week in Odisha
CUTTACK: In a bid to improve the ecological biodiversity of the city, the Cuttack Municipal Corporation (CMC) has decided to plant around 1.5 lakh saplings during observation of Van Mahotsav Week during July first week. As per the decision taken by the civic body in a meeting recently, it will procure around one lakh saplings from the Forest department and the remaining 50,000 comprising different varieties of fruit-bearing trees including mango, guava, banyan and amla, will be given by the Horticulture department. CMC mayor Subhas Singh said the corporation will also involve school and college students, puja committees and different non-government organisations (NGOs) in the plantation drive. 'Apart from parks, school and college premises, and open spaces in the city, the plantation drive will this year also be undertaken on three acre land at Mahanadi's Bhuasuni Patha. The saplings, after being planted will be taken care of by the Forest department for around three years. Tree guards will also be deployed to take care of the plants. We have also planned to conduct awareness programmes to sensitise residents on environmental pollution and global warming,' Singh added.

MHADA to plant 1 lakh saplings across Maharashtra during Van Mahotsav Week
The Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA) has declared a statewide tree plantation drive during Van Mahotsav Week from July 1 to July 7 with an aim to plant one lakh saplings in the state. As part of the drive, around 50,000 saplings are to be planted in the undevelopable plots of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR), including the Mumbai and Konkan Housing Boards, through the Miyawaki method — a Japanese forestry technology to grow indigenous forests rapidly and enhance biodiversity in small areas, said Sanjeev Jaiswal, vice-president and Chief Executive Officer of MHADA, who will spearhead and supervise the drive. The saplings will be purely native and eco-friendly species, and they will be geo-tagged for monitoring and transparency, said MHADA authorities. 'Those plots that are not usable for any construction should be made green lungs for the city,' said Jaiswal, who presided over a preparatory meeting on Monday. He directed the officials of MHADA to conduct the campaign with the active involvement of all regional boards and housing colonies under the MHADA ambit. Mumbai Housing Board has been given the task of planting 50,000 saplings, whereas Konkan Housing Board has a target of 25,000 saplings. Each of MHADA's regional boards, including Pune, Nashik, Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Nagpur, and Amravati, have been instructed to plant 25,000 saplings. Jaiswal suggested that the upkeep and maintenance of the saplings, in the long run, should be taken over by the housing societies concerned. 'It must not be a one-time effort but a long-term commitment,' he stated, pointing to the significance of having sustainable greenery. MHADA will release a circular in the future, making compensatory plantation compulsory for all tree-cutting works related to its projects. This will initially be adopted in Mumbai and will be later extended to other parts of Maharashtra.

Mhada gears up for tree plantation during Van Mahotsav
MUMBAI: The Maharashtra Housing Area and Development Authority (MHADA) will conduct a statewide tree plantation drive during Van Mahotsav Week, targeting the planting of 0.2 million saplings across Maharashtra. It also proposes to convert plots in Mumbai that cannot be developed into urban forests. At a meeting of heads of department on Tuesday, Sanjeev Jaiswal, vice-president and chief executive officer, said that during Van Mahotsav Week, from July 1 to 7, various Mhada boards should engage in large-scale tree plantation programmes. Jaiswal also told officers to identify plots in the Mumbai region where no construction or development is possible. He said these plots should be developed into dense urban forests using the Miyawaki method. This method is effective in increasing biodiversity by enabling the plantation of a large number of trees in smaller areas. He said that Mhada's regional boards such as the Mumbai Housing Area Development Board (MHADB) and the Konkan Housing Board should also consider planting trees within the premises of housing colonies under their jurisdiction. Jaiswal set a target of 50,000 saplings for the MHADB and 25,000 saplings for the Konkan Housing Board. All saplings must be geo-tagged. A circular mandating compensatory plantation wherever tree felling takes place under Mhada projects will soon be issued. Initially, this will be applicable to Mumbai and later extended to other regional boards.
