Sara Duterte should be convicted, groups clamour outside Senate
MANILA: Progressive groups trooped to the Senate on Tuesday (June 3) to pound on the establishment's gates and appeal for the conviction of impeached Vice President Sara Duterte.
Among these progressive groups are Bayan, Gabriela, and Kilusang Mayo Uno.
Bayan Secretary General Mong Palatino said they are willing to hold vigils in front of the Senate if senators fail to act on the Articles of Impeachment against Duterte.
'We will make the Senate accountable because, instead of listening to the voices of the people, and instead of showing evidence that there had been corruption, the chamber chose to conceal and protect the thief,' said Palatino.
'What does this teach us? That it is okay to steal? It's okay to hide confidential funds? That unexplained wealth is okay? That betrayal of public trust is acceptable as long as there's negotiation between them and those who are in power?' he asked.
'We will not allow that,' he said.
Senate President Chiz Escudero earlier moved the presentation of Articles of Impeachment against Vice President Sara Duterte from June 2 to June 11.
He said the schedule change was made 'to allow the Senate to tackle priority legislative measures before the 19th Congress adjourns.'
The Senate chief likewise clarified that the 19th Congress — even if it convenes into an impeachment court before the present Congress adjourns — 'cannot bind' the subsequent Congress with its decisions.
He explained that the 20th Congress will need to reconvene as an impeachment court and decide on its own in terms of the fate of the impeachment trial against the vice president.
Duterte was impeached by the House of Representatives in a move that garnered over 200 signatures from lawmakers.
On the same day, Feb. 5, the Articles of Impeachment were transmitted from the House of Representatives to the Senate.

MANILA (Bloomberg): The Philippines' House of Representatives on Monday asked the Supreme Court to reverse its decision nullifying the impeachment case against Vice President Sara Duterte over an apparent threat to assassinate President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. The House filed an appeal before the high court, which unanimously decided last month that the complaint against Duterte defied the constitutional rule that only one impeachment proceeding may be initiated against the same official within one year. "Impeachment is primarily a political process, as emphasized by the Constitution's entrusting it to Congress and not to the Judiciary,' lawyers for the House said in the motion for reconsideration. "Thus, any ruling of this Honorable Court on impeachment must reflect impeachment's true nature. It must give due deference to the branch of government to whom impeachment is entrusted,' they said. The vice president, daughter of ex-leader Rodrigo Duterte, was impeached in February by the House and has denied accusations that include plotting to assassinate Marcos and misusing public funds. The bid to oust the vice president came as her public feud with Marcos deepened, following their triumphant election team-up in 2022. Rodrigo is currently detained at the International Criminal Court on charges of crimes against humanity over his deadly drug war. The House, which had archived three impeachment complaints filed against Sara Duterte in December, said all complaints were treated in accordance with the Constitution. "It is rather the fourth impeachment complaint which barred all other impeachment from being initiated,' the House's motion read. The court decision was a relief for Duterte, who was awaiting trial in the country's Senate that could disqualify her from public office if convicted. The vice president is widely seen as a top contender for the 2028 election to succeed Marcos, who is limited to a single, six-year term. US museum says Trump admin did not compel impeachment display removal

(EPA Images pic) WASHINGTON : The recent removal of a placard at the National Museum of American History that detailed Donald Trump's two impeachments did not come after White House pressure, the museum's parent organization said Saturday. The placard was meant to be temporary and 'did not meet the museum's standards in appearance, location, timeline, and overall presentation,' the Smithsonian Institution said in a statement on X. 'It was not consistent with other sections in the exhibit and moreover blocked the view of the objects inside its case. For these reasons, we removed the placard. 'We were not asked by any Administration or other government official to remove content from the exhibit.' The Smithsonian statement came after The Washington Post reported Thursday that the museum last month removed the placard describing Trump's impeachments and reverted to old signage that said 'only three presidents have seriously faced removal' – Andrew Johnson, Richard Nixon and Bill Clinton. The Post said the removal stemmed from a Smithsonian content review after the White House pressured the organisation to remove a director of one of its art museums. Trump is the only American president to have been impeached twice – first in 2019 for abuse of power and obstruction of Congress, then in 2021 for inciting an insurrection. He was acquitted by the Senate both times. Since starting his second term in January, the Republican has moved to control major cultural institutions, while slashing arts and humanities funding. In March, Trump signed an executive order to 'restore the Smithsonian Institution to its rightful place as a symbol of inspiration and American greatness' and 'remove improper ideology'. The order accused the institution of having 'come under the influence of a divisive, race-centred ideology' and argued the shift has promoted narratives that portray American values as 'inherently harmful and oppressive'. The impeachment exhibit 'will be updated in the coming weeks to reflect all impeachment proceedings in our nation's history,' the Smithsonian said in its statement.

Integrity and accountability key to 13MP success, says KPPA
PUTRAJAYA: Integrity and accountability will serve as core pillars in the implementation of the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP), in line with the government's commitment to enhancing public service delivery through greater transparency. Director-General of Public Service (KPPA) Tan Sri Wan Ahmad Dahlan Abdul Aziz said the Government Service Efficiency Commitment (Iltizam) Bill 2025, passed by the Senate last March, will be a key instrument in fostering a new culture of governance with emphasis on monitoring, evaluation and transparency in every implementation of government policies. 'We will further strengthen the monitoring of development projects under the 13MP. At the same time, we aim to ensure that service delivery to the public is more structured and effective. The Iltizam Act, which has now been approved, will enable us to assess the performance of ministries, departments, and agencies comprehensively,' he told reporters after the 'Larian Majlis Amanat Perdana Perkhidmatan Awam Ke-20 (MAPPA XX)' here today. Also present were Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar and Ministry of Communications Secretary-General Datuk Seri Mohamad Fauzi Md Isa. Wan Ahmad Dahlan said civil servants have pledged their full commitment to implementing all initiatives and policies outlined in the 13MP tabled by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim last July 31. Meanwhile, the Public Service Department (JPA), in a statement, said that 12,000 participants took part in the MAPPA XX 2025 Run, an impactful event designed to foster unity among national leaders, civil servants, and the public. The MAPPA XX 2025 Run is part of ongoing efforts to reinforce the core values of Malaysia MADANI, namely inclusivity, respect, compassion, and well-being, within a responsive and people-centric public service landscape.
