Huma Qureshi says ‘demanding roles on my terms didn't come at a cost'
Actor Huma Qureshi has been doing different kinds of roles ever since she entered the film industry in 2012 with Gangs Of Wasseypur. The actor, who celebrates her birthday today, speaks from her experience as she asserts that the belief that females artistes get offered limited roles is wrong. Huma Qureshi is celebrating her birthday today in a low-key manner. Huma, who will be celebrating a lowkey birthday with her family and friends and turns 39 today, shares how demanding roles on her terms has never backfired her. 'I've been constantly busy, so I don't think it comes with a cost. I feel it's a narrative that is sold to young women that 'oh this country only wants to see a particular kind of a girl.' That's not true course we want to see a particular kind of a girl and a particular kind of a guy. Do we not love the big machismo movies? Of course we do, because they're well made films." Also Read| Huma Qureshi says casting agent told her to 'do younger parts' after Maharani, Tarla: 'You are such a beautiful woman' The actor, who has experienced diverse characters like Badlapur, Luv Shuv Tey Chicken Khurana, Maharani, Dedh Ishqiya amongst others, says it's a myth that formulas work, leading to limited roles for artists. 'Formulas don't work, which is why a lot of films don't work, but whenever there's something new and refreshing, and something honest and authentic, I think the audiences lap it up,' says the actor. However, the actor clarifies that while she focuses on demanding variety of characters, she also enjoys the quintessential ones. 'It's about being able to do singing, dancing and other things. There are films coming in which I'm playing the quintessential heroine and you know and there are which are completely revolving around me and I'm the number one the call sheet,' says the actor, whose film Bayan will be premiering at Toronto International Film Festival.

Protesters burn Marcos, Sara effigies at Philcoa ahead of SONA
Members of BAYAN Southern Tagalog on Monday morning burned two effigies at Philcoa in Quezon City ahead of the fourth State of the Nation Address (SONA) of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. The two effigies named 'ZOMBBM' and 'SARANANGGAL' depicted Marcos and Vice President Sara Duterte as monsters, according to GMA Integrated News' James Agustin. In a statement, Bayan said the protest showed 'people's outrage against disastrous US-Marcos regime and corrupt political system.' The group cited the ongoing flooding crisis, Supreme Court's decision derailing the impeachment trial of Duterte, the 'blocking' of wage hike bill, ties with the United States, among others. 'The SONA protest in Metro Manila dubbed 'SONA ng Paniningil' is our people's legitimate and democratic response to the exploitation and oppression perpetuated by the US-Marcos Jr regime,' Bayan said. 'In particular, it will provide the opening salvo to a continuing series of mass protests demanding accountability (#MarcosSingilin) while pushing for the ouster of Sara Duterte and the conviction of Rodrigo Duterte in the ICC (#DutertePanagutin),' it added. The Philippine National Police said on Monday that it will provide maximum tolerance for the protesters. —KG, GMA Integrated News

Sara Duterte should be convicted, groups clamour outside Senate
Crimson robe to be worn by senator-judges during the impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte. - Senate photo MANILA: Progressive groups trooped to the Senate on Tuesday (June 3) to pound on the establishment's gates and appeal for the conviction of impeached Vice President Sara Duterte. Among these progressive groups are Bayan, Gabriela, and Kilusang Mayo Uno. Bayan Secretary General Mong Palatino said they are willing to hold vigils in front of the Senate if senators fail to act on the Articles of Impeachment against Duterte. 'We will make the Senate accountable because, instead of listening to the voices of the people, and instead of showing evidence that there had been corruption, the chamber chose to conceal and protect the thief,' said Palatino. 'What does this teach us? That it is okay to steal? It's okay to hide confidential funds? That unexplained wealth is okay? That betrayal of public trust is acceptable as long as there's negotiation between them and those who are in power?' he asked. 'We will not allow that,' he said. Senate President Chiz Escudero earlier moved the presentation of Articles of Impeachment against Vice President Sara Duterte from June 2 to June 11. He said the schedule change was made 'to allow the Senate to tackle priority legislative measures before the 19th Congress adjourns.' The Senate chief likewise clarified that the 19th Congress — even if it convenes into an impeachment court before the present Congress adjourns — 'cannot bind' the subsequent Congress with its decisions. He explained that the 20th Congress will need to reconvene as an impeachment court and decide on its own in terms of the fate of the impeachment trial against the vice president. Duterte was impeached by the House of Representatives in a move that garnered over 200 signatures from lawmakers. On the same day, Feb. 5, the Articles of Impeachment were transmitted from the House of Representatives to the Senate. The upper chamber adjourned its sessions on that day. - Philippine Daily Inquirer/ANN
