Indian national sentenced in Singapore for using fake documents in job fraud
Singapore, Jul 30 (PTI) A 20-year-old Indian national has been charged with cheating and using forged documents to deceive a domestic worker into paying over SGD 2,000 for fake job offers for her relatives, The Straits Times reported. Charanjeet Singh was sentenced to 13 weeks in jail by a Singapore court on Tuesday on account of cheating and using forged documents, while three other charges were taken into consideration during sentencing. The court was told that Singh met the 29-year-old Indian domestic worker in October 2024 and claiming that he could secure jobs in Singapore for her relatives, he demanded Rs 2,50,000 (approximately SGD 3,700) per applicant. Between November 17 and December 1, the victim transferred SGD 2,135 to Singh. In return, he sent her forged Ministry of Manpower (MOM) documents, including altered in-principle approval letters for work permits. These were created using an original document he had accessed without consent from a former co-tenant. The deception came to light when the victim's employer helped verify the status on MOM's website and found no such applications existed. When confronted, Singh falsely claimed that the approvals would only be visible after full payment was made. 'The accused assured the victim that he would give her a password to access the information on MOM's website after full payment was made," the Singapore daily quoted Deputy Public Prosecutor Maximilian Chew as saying. After receiving the full amount, Singh became untraceable, prompting the victim to lodge a police report on December 26. Singh was arrested on April 24, The Straits Times said. Singh, who was unrepresented, said through an interpreter that he regretted his actions and accepted punishment, the report added. Govt taking steps to curb cyber frauds: Scindia
New Delhi, Jul 30 (PTI) The government is taking various measures, including setting up the Digital Intelligence Platform, to curb cyber frauds, Union Communication Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia said on Wednesday. He also highlighted that international spoofed calls have come down by 97 per cent. The communications and home ministries have taken four to five major measures to deal with cyber crimes, he told the Lok Sabha. The Digital Intelligence Platform (DIP) brings various stakeholders together. It has coopted 620 institutions, including 570 banks, police institutions of 36 states and investigating agencies, Scindia said during the Question Hour. A Fraud Risk Indicator (FRI) software is being used wherein the data about individuals doing fraud with banks are categorised into various categories. The details are provided to all the banks and the transaction of such individuals are blocked, he said. In his written reply, Scindia said the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) undertakes efforts to prevent misuse of telecom resources for cyber frauds. 'Based on cyber fraud cases reported on National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal (NCRP) of Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), DoT has disconnected 3.57 lakh mobile numbers of which highest number of mobile connections are from Rajasthan, Bihar and West Bengal. 'Further, DoT has developed an indigenous Artificial Intelligence (AI) and big data analytic tool ASTR to identify suspected mobile connections taken by same person in different names. More than 82 lakhs such connections have been disconnected after failing reverification process," he said. DoT has also put in place a robust Know Your Customer (KYC) framework for issuing mobile connections to subscribers. Scindia said DoT has also amended existing KYC instructions and introduced business connections framework where KYC of each end-user is made mandatory before activation. 'In addition, a robust KYC process for SIM Swap/replacement has also been introduced," he added. Responding to a supplementary question, Scindia said state-owned BSNL and MTNL are back on the road to recovery. The minister mentioned about the review meeting of BSNL this week, and said a business plan will be prepared, especially for each business circle. 'Death is the most beautiful part of my life': 25-year-old CA dies by suicide in Delhi hotel using helium gas; note mentions loneliness
NEW DELHI: A 25-year-old chartered accountant, Dheeraj Kansal, died by suicide on July 28 by inhaling helium gas at a hotel in New Delhi's Bengali Market area, leaving behind a note explaining his solitary life after his father's death in 2003 and his mother's subsequent remarriage. Kansal, who resided in a paying guest house in Mehrauli, had checked into a guest house near Janpath. He documented his intentions on social media and left a suicide note written in English in his left pocket, according to PTI. "I am writing a suicide note in case if you didn't see my post on social media in case someone deletes my post. I am going away, and no one should be held responsible for this," the note stated. A team from Barakhamba Police Station broke open the door and discovered a helium gas cylinder connected to three plastic pipes. "The saddest part of my life was my birth; death is the most beautiful part of my life. If you're reading this, I'm already gone. I wasn't deeply connected to anyone, nor was anyone to me. There's no reason, no regret, and no complaint," Kansal wrote in his note. Police officials explained that helium inhalation is highly fatal as it leads to oxygen deprivation in the body. According to the recovered note, Kansal had been alone since losing his father in 2003. His mother had remarried afterward, and he had no siblings. His body was received by his uncle and cousins.
