As fear spreads among domestic workers, car cleaners, ragpickers and housekeeping staff – particularly those from Indian states like West Bengal and Assam – residents are now grappling with a severe shortage of support services. The police drive, which began earlier this month, has already led to the detention of eight Bangladeshi nationals who were residing illegally in different parts of Gurugram, according to a PTI report. According to the police, the detainees are being held at designated centres and will face deportation. Officials insist the crackdown is targeted solely at undocumented immigrants, and not at Indian citizens from other states. However, panic continues to grip migrant workers in Gurugram. Fearful of being wrongly identified or detained, hundreds of workers have fled overnight, leaving societies in chaos. Residents in several sectors report garbage piling up, unwashed cars, and homes without maids or cooks. 'This feels like a throwback to the Covid lockdown—but now we have to go to the office as well. How are we supposed to manage both work and house chores," said a resident of Sector 70. With panic stricken housekeeping staff, hesitating in coming to work, the Resident Welfare Associations of Gurugram condominiums have stepped up to protect those with valid Indian documents, who have been working in the city for years. Preeti Purohit, RWA President of GPL Eden Heights in Sector 70, said that the management had reached out to the Police Commissioner of Gurugram, who assured them that workers with valid Indian ID proofs will not be harmed. The society RWA, through its security, communicated to the housekeeping and domestic staff that they need not panic. In Sector 69, the RWA of Tulip Violet reached out to Gurugram Police to seek clarity and held awareness drives with workers employed in the society. Volunteers reassured domestic staff that Indian citizens – regardless of their state of origin – need not worry, provided they carry valid identification. An advisory also began circulating across multiple society WhatsApp groups, outlining the facts for residents to share with their workers. It reads: 'The drive is focused solely on illegal immigrants from Bangladesh, not Indian citizens. Detentions are being made only in cases where individuals fail to produce valid documents. Workers from Bihar, West Bengal, Assam or other Indian states are advised to carry Aadhaar cards, voter IDs, ration cards or any address proof. If physical copies are unavailable, digital versions can be shared by family members via WhatsApp." 'Calm cooperation with police and presenting valid documents will allow workers to continue without issue," it adds. The RWAs and residents are working to fight misinformation and prevent further disruption to both livelihoods and residential life. Need for Clear Communication The Gurugram Police have maintained that the intention is not to harass Indian citizens but to enforce the law against illegal migration. However, residents and community leaders are urging the administration to launch an official awareness campaign to ensure that the message reaches all workers – especially those vulnerable to rumours and misinformation. Gurgaon RWAs step up to avert exodus of workers as cops ramp up checks
Gurgaon: Amid growing anxiety among domestic workers, housekeeping staff and car cleaners after police have launched intensive verification drives to track illegal immigrants, several RWAs in the city have taken proactive steps to alleviate their fears. Police enforcement measures, according to RWAs, have inadvertently caused panic among the city's informal workforce, particularly those living in unauthorised colonies or slum settlements. As a result, many workers have either stopped coming to work or informed their employers of plans to leave the city, with some even returning to their hometowns out of fear of police detention or deportation threats. In the wake of this, RWAs have initiated outreach efforts to reassure their staff and maintain the continuity of daily services at housing societies. Pooja Anand, RWA president of Tulip Violet in Sector 69, said the association is committed to rebuild trust among domestic staff and other support workers. "We've been encouraging people to come to work and told them there's no need to worry. Most of them have been with us for years and have valid documents," she said. Many are feeling spooked and are running away. Of 45 staff members at the condo, only 15 came to work. This has disrupted basic services," she added. Similarly, Sunil Sharma,RWA president of Palm Gardens in Sector 83, has advised residents against making impulsive decisions. "We've told staff not to panic and to cooperate with police. If they have valid documents, there's no reason to worry," he said, adding that despite police assurances that the drive targets only undocumented immigrants, the lack of clear communication and the spread of unverified audio messages on social media have fuelled confusion and fear among workers. Jaswant Rao, RWA president of Astaire Gardens in Sector 70A, said the situation has caused confusion and unnecessary hysteria among support staff and residents alike. "People are clueless about what exactly is happening. The administration should involve RWAs in the process to prevent this kind of crisis. Elderly residents need daily support, and many families are struggling," he said. Rao further said most of the housekeeping and security staff in their society have already undergone police verification, yet many remain anxious about whether their verification is still valid or if they will be questioned again. Gurgaon: As police began detaining suspected illegal immigrants, especially those from the Bengali-speaking minority community, several neighbourhoods in the city are struggling with mounting garbage and deteriorating sanitation conditions. Residents say that garbage collection has come to a near halt in many sectors and colonies, with sanitation workers failing to turn up for duty since the crackdown began. With nowhere else to dispose it of, some are resorting to dumping garbage in open spaces, further adding to the civic mess. Rajkumar Yadav, RWA president of Sector 46, said, "This has become a full sanitation crisis. Garbage wasn't picked up from our households for over a week. It's rotting in the heat, and the stench is spreading to nearby homes. Some are even dumping waste in open plots. MCG has not provided any backup plan." They give contracts to firms that don't even have sufficient vehicles or manpower to collect the waste regularly. Even the private vendor has now suddenly disappeared. Many of the workers haven't shown up since the police started detaining people," he said. Meanwhile, MCG officials confirmed that waste collection has slowed down in several zones and attributed the disruption to crunch in manpower. "We are aware of the shortfall and have asked the agencies to engage backup staff and hire locals where possible. As of now, 100 vehicles have been deployed for door-to-door collection," said a senior official of MCG. One contractor, speaking on condition of anonymity, said, "Nearly 60-65% of our workforce are Bengali-speaking Muslims. After the raids began, there was panic. Some were beaten by police; others heard rumours and just left. Now they have gone to nearby districts or back to their villages. Replacing them with local workers is proving very difficult — the scale is too big and few are willing to take up waste collection. " In Suncity, residents say garbage was not collected for ten days. "It's becoming unbearable. We've been keeping garbage inside our homes. There has been no communication from the civic body on when normal service will resume," said VMK Singh, a long-time resident of the township. Despite assurances that the crackdown is focused only on undocumented foreign nationals, many workers feel unsafe. "I have Aadhaar, voter ID, everything. But I heard that people with documents were still picked up and kept for days. I don't want to take that risk," said Azirur Rehman, who works as a waste collector and lives in Islampur. However, some RWAs say they've been left to manage the crisis on their own. At Ardee City in Sector 52, the RWA moved quickly to fill the gap after all 12 of its waste collectors left the city. "We coordinated with the same private vendor and managed to deploy four local workers and a garbage pickup truck," said Chaitali Mandhotra, an RWA member. "We created an alert system using WhatsApp lane groups and a PA system. As soon as the truck reaches a lane, residents are notified to hand over their garbage bags. This has helped us maintain cleanliness and avoid pile-ups." Similarly, DLF City facility management has rolled out a set of temporary interventions to ensure continuity of services. To deal with the shortfall, the management has introduced mobile central collection points (MCCPs) — tractor trolleys stationed at fixed locations like parks and gates within each block. Dhruv Bansal, residents representative, DLF City Residents Groups said, "The sanitation collapse in DLF City is not just a civic failure—it's the result of poorly executed verification drives that led to the abrupt removal of experienced Bengali sanitation workers. These workers formed the backbone of our daily waste management system. Their sudden exit, without trained replacements, has triggered a garbage emergency across DLF phases. Residents are now dealing with overflowing waste, foul stench, and a serious public health threat. We demand immediate restoration of proper staffing and long-term planning from authorities."
