Pete Carroll discusses reception from USC fans after first being hired by Trojans

USA Todaya day ago
As we all know, Pete Carroll is a USC legend. During his nine seasons as the head coach of the program, the Trojans won two national championships and four Rose Bowls, produced three Heisman Trophy winners, and recorded countless other accomplishments.
Few saw that coming when Carroll was first hired, however. At the time, he was seen as a failed NFL coach, and his hiring by the Trojans was met with much skepticism.
On Wednesday, The Athletic ran a profile of Carroll and how he continues to thrive despite his age. The story included a quote from Carroll on his reception upon his arrival at USC nearly 25 years ago.
"They were yelling at me for coming in there. They didn't want me,' Carroll said. 'I was getting a terrible response, but I took it on as, 'I couldn't care less,' because I knew where we were going and what we wanted to do. And because I figured out how I wanted to do it.'
Of course it did not take too long for USC fans to change their tone about Carroll. Less than three years later, the Trojans were national champions.
Carroll would go on to lead the program to a historic seven-year run between 2002 and 2008. Every season during that stretch, the Trojans won double-digit games and either played for a national championship or recorded a major bowl victory. While it has now been more than 15 years since he left USC, Carroll will forever hold a special place in program lore.

Cam Ward Has Strong Words on His Plans Before Training Camp

Cam Ward Has Strong Words on His Plans Before Training Camp originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Former Miami Hurricane and No. 1 overall draft pick, Cam Ward, 23, emerged as one of football's most dynamic quarterbacks, defined by steady improvement and explosive statistical growth. Advertisement Over the course of a five-year collegiate career, Ward competed at Incarnate Word and Washington State before transferring to Miami for his final season, where he decisively raised his profile among the nation's elite passers. At Miami, Ward completed 305-of-454 pass attempts for a 67.2 percent completion rate while amassing 4,313 passing yards, 39 touchdowns and seven interceptions—a stat line that placed him amongst the best quarterbacks in college football. Meanwhile, the Tennessee Titans, coming off a dismal 3-14 campaign that left them at the bottom of the AFC South and tied for the worst record in the league, selected Ward first overall. Advertisement In an interview amid a series of early minicamp practices, Ward was asked about his offseason plans, and he bluntly stated, 'Just work out, stay in the playbook, and throw the (expletive) out the ball.' Since joining the Tennessee Titans, Ward's performances during minicamp have provided a glimpse into his potential as a game manager and aggressor on the field. In his first day of mandatory minicamp drills, he completed an impressive 42-of-58 pass attempts during 7-on-7 sessions, including a stretch where he recorded 21 consecutive completions while connecting on several deep passes. Those early numbers, complemented by his measured growth and consistent work ethic, have raised expectations for his rookie season, where he is expected to compete for the starting job alongside Tennessee's second round draft pick, Will Levis. 49ers' Christian McCaffrey Receives Disappointing News on Monday

49ers' Christian McCaffrey Receives Disappointing News on Monday originally appeared on Athlon Sports. San Francisco 49ers running back Christian McCaffrey dealt with some pretty significant injury issues early in his career with the Carolina Panthers. Advertisement So when he missed 13 games last season with Achilles tendinitis that sidelined him for the first eight games of the year then a PCL sprain that knocked him out for the final five games, 49ers fans likely were likely spiraling heading into the offseason. As he heads into his final season before his 30th birthday, McCaffrey's durability is being called into question. In Jeremy Fowler's annual offseason top 10 positional rankings for ESPN, McCaffrey dropped quite a few spots from the previous year when he was the top-ranked runner in the NFL according to executives, coaches and scouts. In the 2025 rankings, McCaffrey dropped four spots to the No. 5 position, and his injury history is a big reason why he's no longer perceived as the best at his position. Advertisement San Francisco 49ers running back Christian McCaffrey (23) warms up before a game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at Raymond James Ray Seebeck-Imagn Images 'He's a great player, but he's always had durability issues, even in college,' an anonymous NFL personnel executive said. 'He's an elite trainer and takes great care of himself. He's just not a big body and will lose a step eventually.' Despite his injury woes, McCaffrey is one of, if not the top running back in the league when healthy. He's just one season removed from leading the NFL in yards from scrimmage (2,023) and total touchdowns (21), and he's rushed for over 1,000 yards in every season he's played 16 or more games since becoming a starter. Though his stock has diminished in the eyes of some NFL executives, others still seem to believe McCaffrey. Cam Ward Highlights Titans Teammate With Powerful Message on Monday

Cam Ward Highlights Titans Teammate With Powerful Message on Monday originally appeared on Athlon Sports. There are already bonds being formed between the Tennessee Titans and rookie quarterback Cam Ward. The former Miami Hurricanes has made an early impression on his teammates. Advertisement Before the Titans' minicamps began in June, Ward told reporters his plans for the offseason. 'Work out, stay in the playbook, and throw the (expletive) out the ball,' said Ward. With a penchant for blunt talk, Ward lived up to his standard when a clip from one of his workouts was reshared on the NFL's X account. Ward, shown moving between stations at the gym, explained what he likes about his teammate, wide receiver Calvin Ridley, and what makes him "different." "That boy there? Different. How he move, everything that I like see. (He's) what a receiver is supposed to be like," said Ward. "That's why (Titans rookie receivers) Elic (Ayomanor), Chim (Dike), (Xavier Restrepo), Bryce (Oliver), all the guys in our room," Ward continued. "I'm glad they got (Ridley) cause like, I ain't never thrown to a receiver like him, (that) moves like him, can cut like him. And that boy, he ain't selfish, either. He wants the rookies-- he wants us to do better than him, cause he's gonna end up getting his one-on-ones." Advertisement The Titans reloaded at the receiver position this offseason. Van Jefferson and Tyler Lockett are the Nos. 2 and 3 receivers behind Ridley. However, the rest of the depth chart at wideout is an open competition. Tennessee Titans quarterback Cam Ward (1).Steve Roberts-Imagn Images Ridley was Tennessee's leading receiver in 2024. He caught 64 passes for 1,017 yards and four touchdowns. No other pass-catcher had more than 500 receiving yards. No other receiver had more than 40 receptions. With 195.1 passing yards per game last season, Tennessee ranked 26th in the NFL. The arrival of Ward, who's been described as a "baller" by ESPN's Louis Riddick in an interview with Athlon's Luke Easterling, can hopefully change the fortunes for his franchise.
