'Not happy': Fans react amid sad news around Tony Squires and Candice Warner

Yahoo08-06-2025
Fans are expressing their sadness after it was revealed on Saturday that long-running sports program 'The Back Page' has been axed after 29 years. Tony Squires, who has hosted the show on Fox Sports for the last 12 years, confirmed the sad news but admitted he wasn't surprised.
The sport talk-show has been running since 1997, but will wrap up for good after three more episodes. 'Ironically, I wrote a story in 2021 saying television shows don't usually last 25 years,' Squires told . 'They're like animals on the Savannah - very few of them die of old age.
'There's always something young and exciting with big nasty teeth, coming to get them. Well, The Back Page is now 29 years old, I've been hosting it for almost 13 years ... and we've been got. To be honest, it wasn't a shock.'
The late, great Mike Gibson was the show's first host back in 1997, and held the role up until 2012. Peter FitzSimons, Billy Birmingham, Tracey Holmes and Jeff Wells were the panellists when it first began, and in recent times it regularly featured journalist Robert Craddock, ironwoman Candice Warner, NRL legend Greg Alexander and AFL great Brad Johnson.
Warner, the wife of Aussie cricket great David, became a weekly panellist in 2022 and used the show as a launching pad for her burgeoning media career. Former AFL player-turned-radio host Ryan Fitzgerald was also a regular panellist, as were Socceroos legends Robbie Slater and Mark Bosnich.
'It's been a privilege to host a show once run by the legendary Mike Gibson,' said Squires, who's expected to stay on with Fox Sports in another role. 'But most of all it's been fun - like sitting at the pub with your mates pretending to know a shitload about sport.
'I'm going to miss it. Not because it was a job, but because it was my social life. I got to hang out with Kelli Underwood, Ryan Fitzgerald, Kerry O'Keeffe, Candice Warner, Brad Johnson, Ben Dixon and Robert Craddock - the most enthusiastic man on the planet.
'We've interviewed hundreds of sporting superstars over the years. From Rod Laver to Gout Gout – a 17-year-old kid who lit up the screen on his first live TV interview show just a few weeks ago.'
Fox Sports boss Steve Crawley said the decision to cut 'The Back Page' is not a cost-cutting move, denying it has anything to do with Foxtel's new owners DAZN. 'At Fox Sports we have introduced a number of new shows in recent times and we have more in final planning,' he said. 'The Back Page has been entertaining audiences for nearly three decades; there are very few shows that can claim that.
'Entertainment programming is a tough business in that it's like life itself, how everything has a lifespan. Even the great shows like 'Hey Hey It's Saturday' and 'The Back Page'. In a big country with different codes of football and unique tastes, it's extremely rare for a sports show to survive, let alone for almost 30 years.'

Crawley commended Squires and the team that made the show so successful. 'Host Tony Squires, panellists Crash (Craddock) and Fitzy, Candice Warner and Kelli Underwood and producer Matt Parslow have put in so much hard work,' he said. 'We'll celebrate Back Page over the final three weekly episodes.'
Fans of the show took to social media on Saturday to express their sadness at hearing it's been axed. "Not happy at all about this decision," one person wrote. Another commented: "Great show. Looked forward to it every Tuesday. Can't believe it is ending."
The Back Page Australia's longest-running television sports show is closing down after 29 years. Only 3 more episodes to go.I liked it best when Gibbo was host & Billy Birmingham, Peter 'Chippy' Frilingos, Mike Coleman & David Hookes used to chew the sporting fat. Crash ok too. pic.twitter.com/6v3ldG39Ud

Nebraska women's basketball alum Isabella Bourne shines in Asia Cup play

Nebraska women's basketball alum Isabella Bourne was a key piece in helping the Australian national team capture the FIBA Asia Cup title earlier this week. Bourne tallied eight points and three rebounds in the championship game, putting the final stamp on what was an impressive stretch of play. All told, she averaged 6.8 points, 3.2 rebounds, 1.2 assists, and one steal per game during the tournament. Australia required a 5-0 record in the process. She was able to do it all for the Opals on Sunday. She had to three-point shots and was perfect from the free throw line. She had two assists, one steal, and a blocked shot in just over 11 minutes of play. This should come as no surprise to Huskers fans, as she displayed that type of consistency while in Lincoln. She scored 1,221 points during her tenure with the program and served as a three-time co-captain. She also proved to be effective on the boards, snagging 648 rebounds in four seasons. NASCAR to race in San Diego in 2026: Here's what to know

NASCAR will race on a military base next season when it holds a road course event at Naval Base Coronado, located across the bay from San Diego. NASCAR will put on 'what is going to be, undoubtedly the most anticipated event of 2026 — and I'm bullish on it being the best sporting event of the year,' said Ben Kennedy, NASCAR executive vice president, chief venue & racing innovation officer. The Cup Series will be joined by the Xfinity Series and Craftsman Truck Series on Father's Day weekend next June. Here are the details for the event: When are the races? The Craftsman Truck Series will race Friday, June 19 on Fox Sports The Xfinity Series will race Saturday, June 20 on The CW Network The Cup Series will race Sunday, June 21 on Amazon Prime. Where are the races held? Naval Base Cornando What is Naval Base Cornando? The base that is home to 17 squadrons, three aircraft carriers, four SEAL Teams, Navy Expeditionary Combat Command squadrons, and other air, surface and subsurface commands. Among the notable commands at Naval Base Coronado are Commander Naval Air Forces, Naval Surface Force Pacific, Commander Naval Special Warfare, and the Fleet Readiness Center Southwest. What is the race course? That will be announced sometime in the fall. Kennedy said the course would be 'in the ballpark of three miles.' The longest road course on the Cup circuit this season is Mexico City's Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez at 2.42 miles. Circuit of the Americas was 3.41 miles last year but shortened to 2.4 miles this year. The NASCAR Cup Series raced at Road America — which is 4.408 miles — in 2021 and 2022. The course will wind through streets on the naval base and also include the tarmac, Kennedy said. The course is being designed with the help of iRacing. That allows drivers to try the track virtually and provide feedback. 'It'll be a blend of traditional kind of street racing … where we'll be wind through some of the streets on the base, we'll be going past (aircraft) carriers and eventually go out onto the tarmac, probably by some military aircraft, maybe a couple of F-18s out here and then back toward the entrance of the base,' Kennedy said. Why the naval base? Kennedy said that NASCAR considered a downtown course in San Diego and looked at other areas in Southern California. Kennedy said the idea to race on a military base first occurred with a member of the NASCAR team about three or four years ago. Kennedy said that NASCAR talked to 'a handful of military bases' about the concept but that Naval Base Coronado 'was a really good fit for us.' Kennedy noted that a military base is a good backdrop for a NASCAR event because 'a lot of our fans are either former, current or potential military members. It felt like just a natural opportunity for us to explore.' The event returns NASCAR to Southern California. NASCAR raced at California Speedway in Fontana — about 50 miles east of Los Angeles — from 1997-2020, skipping 2021 and returning in 2022 and 2023. That track was closed after 2023 and part of its land sold. A plan was to convert the 2-mile track to a short track but that has not been done. NASCAR held the Clash at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum from 2022-24 but has not had a presence in Southern California since. How long is this deal? Kennedy said that 'as of now' it is a one-year partnership. That would allow NASCAR to return to the streets of Chicago in 2027 if it wanted only one street race a year. NASCAR recently announced it was putting a 'pause' on the Chicago Street Race for 2026 but was interested in returning in 2027. Or this event could lead to something else. 'We'd love to kick it off and be at Naval Base Coronado for a number of years,' Kennedy said, 'but this could also be an opportunity for us to move it to other military installations across the country, too. How many fans will be able to attend? Kennedy said that is still being determined and no announcement on that will be likely until the fall. Kennedy did say that 'we would expect tens of thousands of people. The great part about it is the base has penalty of space to use. … We'll have grandstands and suites and hospitality areas, but we'll also be selling more of a general admission ticket to which will probably have a lot of volume. So we would expect quite a few people to be attending this.'
