HBCU Football Classic Returns to New York
The game will be played at the Rochester Community Sports Complex, the same venue that hosted last year's inaugural clash, which saw Albany State roll past Central State in a 28–7 victory. But this year, it's more than redemption for the Marauders-it's about inspiring a new generation.
"This event is an incredible opportunity to introduce Rochester students to the rich culture, storied legacy, and academic excellence of America's historically Black colleges and universities," said Rochester Mayor Malik Evans during the official announcement. "This game and the events surrounding it help our youth expand their horizons and see what's possible."
And 'the events surrounding it' aren't just window dressing-they're the heartbeat of the Weekend of Hope, a multi-day celebration designed to connect high school students with life-changing higher education opportunities. Sponsored by Baldwin Richardson Foods and organized by Xperience Live LLC, the Classic blends football, culture, and community with a clear mission: exposure and empowerment.
The weekend kicks off on Thursday, Sept. 25, with an HBCU College Fair at the Blue Cross Arena, featuring reps from over 20 HBCUs ready to assist with on-site applications, financial aid info, and admissions guidance. Friday brings the energy with a pep rally and media day, setting the tone for Saturday's big game.
But before kickoff, the community gets one more taste of tradition-a pre-game tailgate party from 8 a.m. to noon. Expect food, music, and HBCU pride on full display.
"It's important to have local students see and feel local people who have done this," said Varick Baiyina, CEO of Xperience Live. "When they see it, they can believe it. So believe it."
HBCU football is about more than just what happens between the lines-it's legacy, culture, and community. And in Rochester, it's becoming a movement.
Mark your calendars-Sept. 27. Central State vs. Lane. The Frederick Douglass HBCU Football Classic is back in Rochester, New York, and bigger than ever.

Dylan Raiola likens relationship with Patrick Mahomes to Kobe Bryant and Michael Jordan
Before he ever took a snap at the college level, the comparisons were unavoidable for Dylan Raiola. Between his position, No. 15 jersey number, his hair and, at times, his playing style, the Nebraska quarterback has been frequently linked to Kansas City Chiefs star Patrick Mahomes. It's not a connection that Raiola shies away from. If anything, he embraces it — so much so that he has a historical comparison for it. REQUIRED READING: Big Ten college football power rankings start with Penn State, Ohio State In an interview with the Cover 3 Podcast on July 22 at Big Ten media days in Las Vegas, Raiola likened the way he views and tries to emulate Mahomes to Kobe Bryant's relationship with Michael Jordan. 'I'm not comparing myself to Kobe or anything, but like Kobe did to Mike, that's kind of what it is for me to Patrick,' Raiola said. 'He's one of the best quarterbacks in the league right now, if not the best. Just for me to be able to have someone to look up to, talk, call, whatever…the comparisons are kind of everything outside. I can't control that god made me look like this, play the same sport. It's all love.' Nebraska's Dylan Raiola On his relationship with Patrick Mahomes:"What Kobe did to Mike, That's kind of what it is for me to Patrick" #BigTenMediaDays #Nebraska #dylanraiola Over the course of his legendary NBA career, Bryant became perhaps the closest thing the sport had seen to Jordan since his retirement, emulating his game, mannerisms, trademark intensity and even hairstyle, trading in his baby afro for a shaved head. One year into his college career, Raiola has taken the same kind of approach with Mahomes, opting for a similar haircut and wearing a headband during games. Before a win last season against Colorado, Raiola generated widespread attention on social media for mimicking Mahomes' pregame routine. Raiola trains with quarterbacks coach Jeff Christensen and trainer Bobby Stroupe, both of whom worked with Mahomes on his rise to NFL stardom. The comparison, of course, has its limits. Beyond their follicle choices, the two don't look all that much alike (Mahomes is mixed, with a white mother and Black father, while Raiola is of Polynesian descent). More glaringly, one of the quarterbacks is a three-time Super Bowl champion and a two-time NFL MVP while the other is a 20 year old who threw 13 touchdowns to 11 interceptions for a team that went 3-6 in the Big Ten last season. The tie between the two is more than superficial, though. Mahomes and Raiola have struck up a relationship, with Raiola noting the two call and text one another. Last year, Mahomes shouted out Raiola on social media, referring to him as 'Lil cuzzo.' In about a month, there will be one more data point between the two — Raiola and Nebraska will open their 2025 season at Arrowhead Stadium against Cincinnati on August 28.

Get The Look: A'ja Wilson's Braid Game Is Undefeated
Source: Steph Chambers / Getty When it comes to dominating both on and off the court, A'ja Wilson is in a league of her own. The WNBA star didn't just show up for All-Star Weekend; she showed out. From electrifying the game with her signature moves to lighting up every appearance with her radiant style and energy, Wilson made sure all eyes were on her. But it wasn't just her game that had folks talking; it was also her hair. Throughout the weekend, A'ja served four distinct braided hairdos by celebrity hairstylist Myesha Jamerson, which were just as powerful as her presence. Each look was intentional, stylish, and rooted in the culture, proving once again that Black women's hair is a statement, a crown, and a form of storytelling. Whether she was stepping onto the court or the pink carpet, Wilson's braids matched her mood and mission, which is to be bold, versatile, and unapologetically her. A'ja Wilson's All-Star Weekend Braided Hair Extravaganza To achieve her daring hairstyles, Jamerson used RED By Kiss Styler Fixer Braiding Gel Extreme + RED By Kiss Edge Cara to smooth and shape Wilson's braids and edges, and she then sealed her mane with the Edge Wrap for hold. For the athlete's curls, the hair expert used RED By Kiss Styler Fixer Foam Mousse to define and hydrate the ends, achieving a soft, goddess-like finish; both products are under $10. Wilson's hair wasn't just an accessory; it was an extension of her confidence, creativity, and her heritage. From intricate cornrow designs to laid-back braided ponytails, Wilson reminded us that braids aren't just a trend, they're a tradition. We hit 46 in our Raiders countdown to kickoff. Who wore it best and who's wearing it now
We've reached 46 days until the Raiders season opener at Foxboro against the Patriots, With our countdown at 46 days we take a look at who currently dons the number in Silver & Black and who has brought it the most distinction. No. 46 Who's wearing it now: TE Carter Runyon Runyon is an undrafted rookie out of Towson. Who wore it best: TE Todd Christensen The only tight end to ever lead the Raiders in receiving four-straight seasons. Christensen went to five Pro Bowls and was a two-time All Pro. He was on both of the Raiders Super Bowl teams in the 80s. The final one, he was the top receiver on the team, catching 92 passes for 1247 yards and 12 touchdowns. He added another 14 catches for 134 yards in the playoffs. I will always remember Christensen most from the NFL Films recounting of Super Bowl XVIII on which Christensen was telling the story of Marcus Allen's legendary reverse-field touchdown run and gets visibly choked up reciting how the announcers said Allen was 'running with the night'. It was clearly one of the greatest moments of Christensen's life. A life that ended too soon as the legendary tight end passed away in 2013 at the age of 57.
