HBCU Football Classic Returns to New York
The game will be played at the Rochester Community Sports Complex, the same venue that hosted last year's inaugural clash, which saw Albany State roll past Central State in a 28–7 victory. But this year, it's more than redemption for the Marauders-it's about inspiring a new generation.
"This event is an incredible opportunity to introduce Rochester students to the rich culture, storied legacy, and academic excellence of America's historically Black colleges and universities," said Rochester Mayor Malik Evans during the official announcement. "This game and the events surrounding it help our youth expand their horizons and see what's possible."
And 'the events surrounding it' aren't just window dressing-they're the heartbeat of the Weekend of Hope, a multi-day celebration designed to connect high school students with life-changing higher education opportunities. Sponsored by Baldwin Richardson Foods and organized by Xperience Live LLC, the Classic blends football, culture, and community with a clear mission: exposure and empowerment.
The weekend kicks off on Thursday, Sept. 25, with an HBCU College Fair at the Blue Cross Arena, featuring reps from over 20 HBCUs ready to assist with on-site applications, financial aid info, and admissions guidance. Friday brings the energy with a pep rally and media day, setting the tone for Saturday's big game.
But before kickoff, the community gets one more taste of tradition-a pre-game tailgate party from 8 a.m. to noon. Expect food, music, and HBCU pride on full display.
"It's important to have local students see and feel local people who have done this," said Varick Baiyina, CEO of Xperience Live. "When they see it, they can believe it. So believe it."
HBCU football is about more than just what happens between the lines-it's legacy, culture, and community. And in Rochester, it's becoming a movement.

One year into his college career, Raiola has taken the same kind of approach with Mahomes, opting for a similar haircut and wearing a headband during games. Before a win last season against Colorado, Raiola generated widespread attention on social media for mimicking Mahomes' pregame routine. Raiola trains with quarterbacks coach Jeff Christensen and trainer Bobby Stroupe, both of whom worked with Mahomes on his rise to NFL stardom. The comparison, of course, has its limits. Beyond their follicle choices, the two don't look all that much alike (Mahomes is mixed, with a white mother and Black father, while Raiola is of Polynesian descent). More glaringly, one of the quarterbacks is a three-time Super Bowl champion and a two-time NFL MVP while the other is a 20 year old who threw 13 touchdowns to 11 interceptions for a team that went 3-6 in the Big Ten last season. The tie between the two is more than superficial, though. Mahomes and Raiola have struck up a relationship, with Raiola noting the two call and text one another. Last year, Mahomes shouted out Raiola on social media, referring to him as 'Lil cuzzo.' In about a month, there will be one more data point between the two — Raiola and Nebraska will open their 2025 season at Arrowhead Stadium against Cincinnati on August 28.

No. 46 Who's wearing it now: TE Carter Runyon Runyon is an undrafted rookie out of Towson. Who wore it best: TE Todd Christensen The only tight end to ever lead the Raiders in receiving four-straight seasons. Christensen went to five Pro Bowls and was a two-time All Pro. He was on both of the Raiders Super Bowl teams in the 80s. The final one, he was the top receiver on the team, catching 92 passes for 1247 yards and 12 touchdowns. He added another 14 catches for 134 yards in the playoffs. I will always remember Christensen most from the NFL Films recounting of Super Bowl XVIII on which Christensen was telling the story of Marcus Allen's legendary reverse-field touchdown run and gets visibly choked up reciting how the announcers said Allen was 'running with the night'. It was clearly one of the greatest moments of Christensen's life. A life that ended too soon as the legendary tight end passed away in 2013 at the age of 57.
