Mayor Malik Evans delivers message after Democratic primary win

Mayor Malik Evans held a press conference June 25 after winning the Democratic primary mayoral race for Rochester the night before. Evans won the race with a total of 7,601 votes, defeating his two opponents — Councilmember Mary Lupien, who received 4,431 votes; and IT Executive Shashi Sinha, with 1,329 votes. During the conference Evans spoke about how proud he was of his campaign and their ability to stay positive throughout the process. "There was a lot of misinformation, a lot of slings and arrows thrown at our record, but we did not let that deter us,' Evans said. "We took our message right to the voters and that is what we will continue to do as we go into November." Evans also addressed how the city joined a lawsuit regarding EPA funding that was frozen to many cities, including Rochester, and his plan to continue dealing with these federal issues. He also mentioned that he will continue to focus on issues such as mental health support, public safety and going forward with a variety of planned projects. "I ran this entire campaign as a cheerleader for Rochester and that is what I will continue to be, a happy warrior for our city, because if we in leadership look down on our city, what are we doing?" Evans said. "We can identify the problems but let's make sure we come up with a solution and that is what we want to do." — Kerria Weaver works as the Government and You reporter for the Democrat and Chronicle, with a focus on how government actions affect communities and neighborhoods in Rochester and in Monroe County. Takeaways from Rochester's primary elections

While Mayor Malik Evans faced the proverbial slings and arrows during his first term in office, Democratic voters gave him a strong endorsement as he coasted to a big primary election night lead over progressive Mary Lupien. Unofficial results give Evans a lead of nearly 3,200 votes over Lupien, a Rochester City Councilmember. Information technology entrepreneur Sashi Sinha finished the evening a distant third, with 1,329 votes. The winner of the June 24 primary will face Conservative Louis Sabo, who owns a photo design studio. Evans alluded to the criticism both local and beyond, including on the city's violent crime rates, to a jubilant crowd of supporters on election night. 'Because we knew we had to put aside childish things to focus on the larger community, and that is what we did for the past six months,' he said. The Rochester City Council will have familiar faces next year based on the unofficial results from the Monroe County Board of Elections. Incumbents Stanley Martin, Miguel A. Melendez Jr. and Mitch Gruber all made the cut of five candidates from a field of 15. Newcomers Lashunda C. Leslie-Smith and Chiara 'Kee Kee' Smith will join them in the general election, along with Conservative Marcus C. Williams. In the Rochester Commissioners of Schools race, incumbent Camille Simmons was the top vote-getter. The other two candidates moving on will be Kareem McCullough and Heather Feinman. When comparing to the 2021 totals, most Monroe County Legislative districts saw lower turnout. The 8 p.m. voter turnout report saw lower percentages of Democratic voters than four years ago, when citywide turnout was just 28.6%. Polls were open until 9 p.m.; all figures from June 24, 2025, are preliminary. HBCU Football Classic Returns to New York

HBCU football is making a triumphant return to Upstate New York as the second annual Frederick Douglass HBCU Football Classic heads back to Rochester on Saturday, September 27. The matchup? Central State University Marauders (Wilberforce, Ohio) vs. Lane College Dragons (Jackson, Tennessee). A battle of proud HBCU programs with deep roots. The game will be played at the Rochester Community Sports Complex, the same venue that hosted last year's inaugural clash, which saw Albany State roll past Central State in a 28–7 victory. But this year, it's more than redemption for the Marauders-it's about inspiring a new generation. "This event is an incredible opportunity to introduce Rochester students to the rich culture, storied legacy, and academic excellence of America's historically Black colleges and universities," said Rochester Mayor Malik Evans during the official announcement. "This game and the events surrounding it help our youth expand their horizons and see what's possible." And 'the events surrounding it' aren't just window dressing-they're the heartbeat of the Weekend of Hope, a multi-day celebration designed to connect high school students with life-changing higher education opportunities. Sponsored by Baldwin Richardson Foods and organized by Xperience Live LLC, the Classic blends football, culture, and community with a clear mission: exposure and empowerment. The weekend kicks off on Thursday, Sept. 25, with an HBCU College Fair at the Blue Cross Arena, featuring reps from over 20 HBCUs ready to assist with on-site applications, financial aid info, and admissions guidance. Friday brings the energy with a pep rally and media day, setting the tone for Saturday's big game. But before kickoff, the community gets one more taste of tradition-a pre-game tailgate party from 8 a.m. to noon. Expect food, music, and HBCU pride on full display. "It's important to have local students see and feel local people who have done this," said Varick Baiyina, CEO of Xperience Live. "When they see it, they can believe it. So believe it." HBCU football is about more than just what happens between the lines-it's legacy, culture, and community. And in Rochester, it's becoming a movement. Mark your calendars-Sept. 27. Central State vs. Lane. The Frederick Douglass HBCU Football Classic is back in Rochester, New York, and bigger than ever. Just over 4,100 voters turned out to the polls during the nine-day early voting period before Tuesday's primary election.
