Sharjah 2408-07-2025
5 Sharjah Centres
The lab is organised in five of its centres across the Emirate of Sharjah: Wasit Youth, Khorfakkan Youth, Kalba Youth, Dibba Al Hisn Youth, and Mleiha Youth.
The programme is organised under the umbrella of the Central Region Centres, under the slogan "Where Skill Meets Fun." The programme is a parallel programme to the 'Let's Summer' 2025 activities.
Exploring Youth Potential
Through the lab, Sharjah Youth provides its members with an ideal opportunity to develop their skills and explore their potential in an inspiring, interactive environment. The programme embodies the vision of His Highness Sheikh Dr Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, and his wife, Her Highness Sheikha Jawaher bint Mohammed Al Qasimi, Chairperson of the Rubu' Qarn Foundation for Creating Future Leaders and Innovators, regarding the importance of building human capital and investing in their capabilities. The lab's activities will extend until the 31st of the same month.
Making the Most of The Summer Vacation
Abdul Hamid Al Yasi, Director of the lab, emphasised the importance of developing human capital and investing in human capital. The Youth Care Department at Sharjah Youth Foundation stated that the Skills Lab is an exceptional opportunity to make the most of the summer vacation through a unique package of programmes delivered in a safe environment. These programmes are designed according to a professional approach that contributes to developing, discovering, and supporting the talents and skills of participants, guiding them toward excellence.
Going Beyond Traditional Summer Programmes
Al Yassi pointed out that this year's Lab offers participants a rich and unique summer experience that goes beyond traditional summer programmes, blending practical creativity with applied knowledge. The focus has been on innovation and diversification in offering more than 100 specialised programmes, falling within eleven themes that address the interests of young people and open up new horizons for expression and innovation.
It also instils a set of institutional values in participants, most notably inclusion, through surveying their opinions to ensure the provision of programmes that align with their aspirations, while ensuring positive impact and sustainability.
550 Participants on the First Day
On its first day, the lab saw a remarkable turnout of more than 550 participants from Sharjah Youth, the Sharjah Police Sciences Academy (SPSA), the Al Hamriyah Cultural and Sports Club, and the Sharjah Social Empowerment Foundation. This reflects Sharjah's commitment to strengthening community partnerships and constructive interaction with local community bodies, institutions, and departments in the Emirate of Sharjah, serving the interests of future generations.
This supports the vision of the Rubu' Qarn Foundation for Creating Future Leaders and Innovators, "A community partner in building and empowering informed and influential generations."
100 Specialised Programmes Across Eleven Themes
The Skills Lab's programmes vary, covering artistic, technical, professional, craft, media, and musical creativity. Participants in the Fine Arts Lab embark on a visual journey through programmes and workshops on the art of pottery, carpets, resin, and cement, where fine details are embodied in handcrafted works that reflect their artistic taste. Screen and lens enthusiasts will find their favorite activities in the Cinematic Arts Lab, which offers a Cinematic Makeup Workshop, teaching the art of visual transformation and creative characterisation.
It also covers photography, lighting, editing, technical processes, scripting, and directing. Meanwhile, the Modern Media Lab takes participants on a visual adventure with the Parallel World Lens Workshop, where the world is explored through the lens of a young woman brimming with artistic flair and visual storytelling.
Behind the microphone, the Youth Studio Lab allows participants to experience podcasting and discover the power of sound to influence and create content. The Lab's organizers have not overlooked the modern heritage aspect, as the Islamic Civilization Arts Lab hosts a three-dimensional crafts workshop, which revives the aesthetic values of civilization with contemporary touches, in addition to the art of Ebru and letter weaving.
The Lab also touches on the spirit of craftsmanship and life skills through the Vocational Lab, which includes programmes such as the Youth Chef, carpentry, and home maintenance, giving participants confidence and self-reliance in everyday life.
The Technical Lab transports participants to the world of sustainability through a solar energy program that enhances their environmental awareness.
For those who love smart innovation, the Smart Room workshop offers an exciting introduction to the world of smart homes. The Skills Lab, in collaboration with Rubu' Qarn's specialised centres, offers programmes in science and technology, theatre and performing arts, life skills, and music.
These programmes include 3D printing in motion, LEGO robotics, and electrical wiring. Furthermore, the programme offers theatre programmes that range from self-discovery to the art of imagination and improvisation. The program also helps participants learn to play musical instruments such as the guitar, piano, and saxophone. With this richness and diversity, the Skills Lab affirms Sharjah Youth's commitment to empowering future generations and honing their skills by providing memorable experiences that contribute to building a well-rounded personality capable of interacting positively with the world around them.

Air India: Low fares lure UAE travelers, but safety fears affecting bookings?

With airfares skyrocketing between India and the UAE as summer vacation peaks, Air India and Air India Express are offering some of the cheapest ticket prices. For many budget-conscious travelers, these fares that are up to 50 per cent lower come as a welcome relief. However, the airlines' cancellations and delays are prompting some travellers to choose other travel options despite the low fares. After the tragic crash of Air India flight AI171 in Ahmedabad on June 12, which was heading to London Gatwick, many travelers became worried about choosing this airline. The plane crashed shortly after take-off into a crowded residential area in India's Ahmedabad. Sadly, 241 out of the 242 people on board lost their lives, along with at least 19 people on the ground. In recent weeks, multiple videos on social media have also highlighted malfunctioning air-conditioning systems, in-flight discomfort, delayed departures, and cancellations. In a statement to Khaleej Times, a spokesperson for Air India Express acknowledged that 'occasional operational issues may arise, as with any fast-growing airline.' However, each instance is addressed with seriousness. 'We remain fully committed to improving reliability and guest experience through proactive maintenance and responsive service.' The airline remains 'one of the top choices' for passengers between the UAE and India, the spokesperson added. 'Air India Express continues to record strong growth in the UAE market, in terms of capacity and the number of guests choosing to fly with us over other carriers,' the airline said. 'Our expanding network, new fleet, and proposition of hot meals, comfortable seats, warm service, and curated fare options resonate well with flyers seeking direct connectivity between the Middle East and India.' Disruptions vs lower fares Earlier, Khaleej Times reported that the airline experienced multiple disruptions on different routes this month. In one instance, passengers on a flight from UAE to India complained that the air-conditioning system was not working, making the cabin extremely hot and uncomfortable. In another incident, an Air India Express flight to Dubai was delayed on the tarmac for over six hours, even though the incoming aircraft had arrived on time. Travel agents and residents have raised concerns around delays, technical issues, and baggage handling. Videos posted on social media, in particular, have made some UAE-based travellers more cautious. Current rates A Khaleej Times analysis of current one-way fares on UAE–India routes shows that the price difference is significant in the first week of August: Dubai to Mumbai: Air India from Dh291, other airlines from Dh580 Dubai to Chennai: Air India from Dh734, other airlines from Dh1,290 Dubai to Bangalore (one stopover): Air India from Dh393, other airlines from Dh1,140 (direct) Dubai to Thiruvananthapuram: Air India Express from Dh403, other airlines from Dh1,040 Subair Thekepurathvalappil, senior manager at Wisefox Tourism, said the Air India Ahmedabad incident is still fresh in the minds of travellers, so some are hesitant to fly with the airline. Subair Thekepurathvalappil, senior manager at Wisefox Tourism, said the Air India Ahmedabad incident is still fresh in the minds of travellers, so some are hesitant to fly with the airline. 'Some clients are preferring to fly with other airlines after the tragedy,' said Subair. 'Also, there's a lot of information being circulated on social media — sometimes about delays, other times about the Ahmedabad incident — and that is something people are expressing concern about.' 'The recent incidents repeatedly popping up on social media could be one of the reasons why travelers are not opting for these airlines. However, other airlines are being considered as alternatives for now,' said Pavan Poojary, travel consultant at Luxury Travels, Abu Dhabi. 'Earlier, Air India and Air India Express flights were always full to their capacity, and while the current demand is slightly lower, I am confident it will bounce back soon,' added Poojary. People still fly 'There are still many people who continue to fly with Air India and Air India Express,' said Libin Varghese, sales director at Rooh Tours and Travel. 'On certain sectors, these airlines operate multiple flights a day, which gives travelers more flexibility. It's just a matter of time, we hope things will stabilise soon and everything will return to normal.' Why residents opt for other airlines Ahmed Ali (name changed), a Dubai resident who travels twice a year to Bangalore, said a friend's experience made him rethink his travel plans. 'When a friend of mine was travelling from Kochi, the flight was delayed for hours. Now I'm travelling with my wife and two young children. I don't want stress to accompany me,' he said. 'With the viral videos of AC not functioning and delays in flight departures and arrivals, I preferred to book my tickets with another airline.' Chiraag, who flies to Kochi once or twice a year to visit his elderly parents, said the reviews of local airlines have always been reassuring. 'The decision to shift to these airlines came after hearing complaints from friends and seeing viral posts online. There are too many issues: flights returning mid-air, air-conditioning failures, and long delays on the tarmac,' said Chiraag. 'Every other day, I see someone posting about it. The UAE airlines are a bit more expensive, but what they offer is peace of mind.'

An initiative rooted in national giving and social responsibility This generous contribution reflects a strong culture of national giving and the deep sense of social responsibility demonstrated by UAE institutions. It also aligns with the humanitarian legacy established by His Highness Sheikh Dr Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, who launched the first endowment for orphans in the emirate. A milestone in supporting the vulnerable The Dubai Islamic Bank's sponsorship marks a pivotal moment in empowering the underprivileged. As a prominent player in national charitable efforts, the Bank is contributing to a sustainable endowment, the proceeds of which will fund the Foundation's comprehensive care programs for its beneficiaries. This step highlights the banking sector's commitment to social development and equity. A continuation of Sharjah's charitable legacy Her Excellency Mona bin Hadda Al Suwaidi, Director General of the Sharjah Social Empowerment Foundation, expressed her heartfelt gratitude to Dubai Islamic Bank for this noble gesture. As the first financial institution to sponsor the endowment, the Bank is continuing the legacy of the Ruler of Sharjah, who initiated this charitable journey. Al Suwaidi noted that this full sponsorship represents a significant shift in expanding the Foundation's capacity to launch sustainable projects and improve the quality of life for orphans. A unique Emirati model for orphan care Al Suwaidi added that this partnership showcases the high level of institutional responsibility across sectors in the UAE. It embodies a collaborative model of giving that sets an example for both the region and the world. The initiative underlines the strategic importance of public-private partnerships in building a comprehensive and sustainable care system for orphans. Building a sustainable future The Foundation aims to establish a growing series of endowments under the 'Prophet's Neighbours Endowment' project. These are designed to generate permanent income that supports members in achieving self-reliance. The initiative reflects the Foundation's vision to transition from traditional care to empowerment through a sustainable, long-term development framework.
