Palestine Action designated a terror group by UK after failed legal action

A UK ban against Palestine Action has come into force, designating it as a terror group after a late-night legal bid to delay it failed.

It makes membership of, or support for, the direct action group a criminal offence punishable by up to 14 years in prison.
The move to ban the organisation was announced after two Voyager aircraft were damaged at RAF Brize Norton in Oxfordshire on June 20, an incident claimed by Palestine Action, which police said caused around £7 million (US$9.5 million) worth of damage.
In response to the ban, a group of around 20 people was set to gather and sit in front of the Gandhi statue in London's Parliament Square on Saturday afternoon, according to campaign group Defend Our Juries.
They will hold signs saying: 'I oppose genocide. I support Palestine Action.'

The newly proscribed group lost a late-night Court of Appeal challenge on Friday to temporarily stop it being banned, less than two hours before the move came into force at midnight.

Gunmen attack ship in Red Sea: monitors

Gunmen attack ship in Red Sea: monitors Gunmen on small boats fired rocket-propelled grenades and small arms at a commercial vessel in the Red Sea off Yemen on Sunday, monitors said, in the latest attack on the vital shipping lane. The incident occurred 51 nautical miles (94 kilometres) southwest of the Yemeni port of Hodeida, said the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations. "The vessel has been engaged by multiple small vessels who have opened fire with small arms and self-propelled grenades. (The) armed security team have returned fire and situation is ongoing," said UKMTO, which is run by the Britain's Royal Navy. UK-based security firm Ambrey reported the merchant vessel "was approached and attacked by eight skiffs while transiting northbound in the Red Sea" before being attacked with small arms and rocket-propelled grenades. Hodeida is controlled by Yemen's Iran-backed Huthi rebels, though no one has claimed responsibility for the assault. The Huthis, who have controlled large swathes of Yemen for more than a decade, began firing at Israel-linked shipping in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden in November 2023, weeks after the start of the Israel-Hamas war in Gaza. They broadened their campaign to target ships linked to the United States and Britain after military strikes by the two countries began in January 2024. In May, the group struck a ceasefire with the United States but vowed to continue targeting Israeli ships in the Red Sea, despite agreeing to the truce that ended weeks of intense American strikes targeting the group. The rebels have attacked dozens of commercial vessels since launching their anti-shipping campaign and have prompted some freight companies to detour around southern Africa to avoid the Red Sea, a vital route that normally carries about 12 percent of global trade, according to the International Chamber of Shipping. Like Iran today, China once had theocracies governed by divine rule

The day before I was scheduled to fly back to Singapore from London recently, Israel decided to launch a surprise attack on Iran. Soon, both countries were firing missiles at each other. Most flights between Europe and Southeast Asia fly over Iran. To be inside a gargantuan Airbus A380 when the sky outside is thick with deadly projectiles and anti-aircraft ordnance was not a comforting thought. On the plane, I anxiously followed the flight path displayed on the little screen as we flew over the Middle East The plane gave a wide berth to most of Iranian airspace, skimming north of the country over the Caspian Sea, but it was only when we saw the back of Iran that I could finally stop worrying. When Iran became an Islamic republic in 1979, I was still a child and too young to fully understand what was going on, but I still remember very vividly the news blitz surrounding the Iranian Revolution and its immediate aftermath. I can still see the grim visage of Ayatollah Khomeini glaring balefully from television screens and newspapers. It was also the first time that I came across the word 'Shiite'.
