'Scunthorpe could become a disaster town if the steelworks close'
"We got an email yesterday about the consultation, but we had already seen a news notification about how this was coming into fruition before any of us had been informed," he said."It is disappointing to find out like that [and] doesn't make it any easier to digest."I could lose my job, livelihood and everything I've known for the last 10 years. I only got married six months ago and now have to think about the future. It's not ideal."Mr Finnigan said there had been rumours the company would receive investment from the government, which had given people hope, and to hear the news of the consultation came as a "massive shock".
He added: "It's still difficult to digest but we will just keep going, doing our bit and seeing what happens."The BBC previously reported that British Steel was expecting a £1bn injection from the government to keep the business going, but it was offered £500m and rejected it.British Steel chief executive Zengwei An said the launch of the consultation process was "a necessary decision given the hugely challenging circumstances the business faces".
The consultation will look at the options of ending operations by early June, in September, or at a later date.
Sandra Donnelly, from alterations shop Sew Easie, said the closure would affect every business and could lead to Scunthorpe becoming a "disaster town".She said: "People will be out of work – where are they going to get their jobs from?"There's just not the jobs here to jump into."The steelworks are our main way of employing people. We've got nothing left – we've lost everything."Patricia Fox, owner of Vanity Fayre hairdressers, is also worried. She said: "We are a small business [which cuts] people's hair who work there. If people won't be able to afford to come to us, everyone is going to suffer."Scunthorpe United FC chairwoman Michelle Harness described the news as "devastating".She said: "I'm sure the town will rally round the steelworkers."We have a large percentage of fans who are steelworkers and families of steelworkers, and there is a lot of history in the town."The town has to now find future jobs as it will affect so many other businesses – there will be a ripple effect from this closure."Listen to highlights from Lincolnshire on BBC Sounds, watch the latest episode of Look North or tell us about a story you think we should be covering here.

Chinese hackers race to target Microsoft SharePoint vulnerability, tech giants say
A newly discovered critical flaw in Microsoft's SharePoint platform has spurred a mad frenzy from hackers — including some working for the Chinese government, Google and Microsoft say. The identities of which organizations have been hacked are still not public, but they are increasing and include multiple government agencies around the world, Charles Carmakal, the chief technology officer at Mandiant, Google's cloud security service, told NBC News. SharePoint works as a shared version of Microsoft Office, letting people in the same organization directly collaborate. The flaw in the software — initially classified as a 'zero day,' because there was not a patch for victims to defend themselves when it was first discovered — lets hackers gain significant access to the computers of organizations that host SharePoint. Cloud customers were not affected. Microsoft announced Saturday that the flaw was being exploited but only made a downloadable fix for it available Monday, prompting a scramble for organizations to patch it while capable hackers hurried to find additional victims who hadn't protected themselves. The incident echoes one in 2021, when a flaw in another Microsoft product, the email program Exchange, allowed a similar mad dash of hacking. In that case, the U.S. formally accused China of snooping on government emails, but a review board also blamed Microsoft for allowing it to happen. In a blog post published Tuesday morning, Microsoft said at least three Chinese hacking groups, two of which are associated with Chinese intelligence, have been exploiting the flaw. The U.S. government and its allies, as well as Western cybersecurity companies, routinely attribute cyber espionage efforts to China, which often downplays the accusations. A spokesperson for China's Embassy in Washington did not directly deny that Chinese intelligence has been using the exploit, but said, 'Cyber attacks are a common threat faced by all countries, China included.' 'China firmly opposes and combats all forms of cyber attacks and cyber crime — a position that is consistent and clear,' the spokesperson said. Neither the White House nor the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency, which protects U.S. federal networks, responded to a request for comment.

Libya's first-ever 1 MW solar power plant completed ahead of schedule in Kufra by Infinity Libya
Infinity Libya, a subsidiary of Infinity Group, and Al-Jouf Free Zone have officially completed and delivered Libya's first-ever 1 MW solar power plant in Kufra, the company informed Libya Herald yesterday. The project, which was handed over on 25 May 2025, was completed ahead of schedule and is now fully operational — marking a major milestone in the country's transition toward renewable energy. This achievement comes just eight months after the signing of the agreement on 24 September 2024, demonstrating an exceptional pace of development and execution. The plant, with a planned capacity of 1.14 MWp, was developed in collaboration with Lamsa Company for General Contracting and Real Estate Investment as the main contractor. The project is now run entirely by a trained team of Infinity Libya employed local engineers, reflecting Infinity's commitment to local empowerment and knowledge transfer, the company explained. The company explained that the solar plant will produce up to 2,182 MWh of clean electricity annually, directly supplying the energy needs of the Al-Jouf Free Zone. It is expected to save approximately 545,000 litres of diesel per year and reduce carbon emissions by around 1,300 tons, contributing meaningfully to environmental sustainability and energy diversification in Libya. In addition to its environmental benefits, the project has driven local economic and social development by creating jobs and building technical capacity within the Libyan renewable energy sector, Infinity added. Mohamed Ismail Mansour, Co-founder and Chairman of Infinity, commented: 'Delivering this project ahead of schedule is a proud moment for our team and for Libya. It signals what is possible when strong partnerships and local talent come together in service of a shared vision for clean, reliable energy. This solar plant is more than just a first for Libya — it is a model for sustainable development that we hope to replicate across the region. We strongly believe in Libya's immense potential and the resilience, talent, and capabilities of its people to lead the country toward a more sustainable and prosperous future.' Fahd Benhalim, Managing Director of Infinity Libya, added: 'This project represents a turning point for renewable energy in Libya. With the Kufra plant now operational, we are not only reducing dependence on diesel but also laying the groundwork for more ambitious developments. We are actively working to expand renewables in key sectors including oil & gas, agriculture, and industry — ensuring that clean energy becomes a cornerstone of Libya's future.' . Wall St set for muted open on corporate earnings, trade talks
July 22 (Reuters) - Wall Street was on track for a mixed start on Tuesday as investors weighed signs of potential trade deals between the U.S. and its partners ahead of the August 1 tariff deadline and assessed a spate of second-quarter company results. At 08:31 a.m. ET, S&P 500 E-minis were up 1.75 points, or 0.03%, Nasdaq 100 E-minis were down 12.25 points, or 0.05%, and Dow E-minis were down 50 points, or 0.11%. U.S. stock futures trimmed early losses after Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced plans to meet his Chinese counterpart next week, potentially discussing an extension to the August 12 deadline set for tariffs on China. With little more than a week to go before the August 1 deadline for most U.S. trading partners, Bessent emphasized on Monday that the administration was prioritizing the quality of trade deals over speed. Meanwhile, trade talks have hit a roadblock as the European Union weighs new countermeasures against the United States. Hopes for an interim U.S. deal with India were fading, Indian government officials said. Wall Street's heavyweights are starting to feel the sting of tariffs. General Motors (GM.N), opens new tab saw its second-quarter core profit tumble 32% to $3 billion, blaming steep tariff costs for shaving $1.1 billion from its bottom line. "Everyone's watching GM very closely, and the numbers did disappoint and specifically related to tariffs," said Mark Malek, chief investment officer at Muriel Siebert. "The fact that they did come out and say that there's going to be a forecast based on increases in tariffs is something that is going to play out throughout the day." The company's shares lost 2.3% in premarket trading, while peer Ford (F.N), opens new tab also dipped 0.7%. RTX (RTX.N), opens new tab cut its 2025 profit forecast as the aerospace and defense giant took a hit from Trump's tariff war. Its shares fell 1%. Despite trade policy uncertainty out of Washington, the resilience of the economy has propelled major indexes to fresh all-time highs. Still, a slew of positive earnings surprises has kept markets near record territory. Analysts expect S&P 500 companies to report a healthy 6.7% jump in second-quarter profits, with Big Tech leading the charge, data compiled by LSEG showed. Tuesday's cautious trading comes after a rollercoaster session that ended with the S&P 500 (.SPX), opens new tab and the Nasdaq (.IXIC), opens new tab both notching record closes. Much of the action was fueled by investors snapping up megacaps such as Alphabet (GOOGL.O), opens new tab ahead of earnings. Google-parent Alphabet and EV-maker Tesla (TSLA.O), opens new tab will kick off quarterly results for the "Magnificent Seven" stocks on Wednesday. Shares of Tesla were up 0.1% in premarket trading, having fallen about 19% so far in 2025 amid CEO Elon Musk's political involvement and challenges faced by its core business. Following last week's mixed economic signals, traders have all but ruled out a rate cut next week and now see about a 56% chance of a reduction in September, according to the CME's FedWatch tool. Among other movers, U.S. coal miners Peabody Energy (BTU.N), opens new tab and Warrior Met Coal (HCC.N), opens new tab were up about 5% each as China's coking coal prices surged amid market speculation about government inspections in major production hubs.
