Appeal after theft from city castle site
A fire extinguisher has been stolen from an English Heritage site in York, police have said. North Yorkshire Police said the extinguisher was taken from Clifford's Tower, the largest surviving part of York Castle, on 8 May. The force released a CCTV image of two people it said may have "important information" about the theft. It asked anyone who recognised the pair to get in touch directly or via anonymous reporting charity Crimestoppers. Police close Ecclesall Road in Sheffield after serious crash
A major road in Sheffield has been closed following a services including the Yorkshire Air Ambulance were called to Ecclesall Road said the road between Greystone Road and Huntington Tower junctions had been shut in both from the scene show a cordon around a number of vehicles including a lorry and a pedal cycle. Leisure centre refits nearing 'ambitious' target
Two leisure centres in Lincoln are on course to reopen in time for the school summer holidays, a council leader has said, following what she described as "amazing" refits. Yarborough and Birchwood leisure centres closed suddenly on 3 April after Active Nation, the charity that ran them, ceased trading. Greenwich Leisure Limited (GLL) was appointed by the City of Lincoln Council in May as an interim operator for a period of two years. Council leader Naomi Tweddle said: "It's a really ambitious date, but we are trying to stick to it. It's imperative that we get people back in the leisure centres." She added: "I've always thought the leisure centres were important, but I think a spotlight was really shone on that when they were closed. "I'm just delighted that, fingers crossed, they will be open very soon. "They're going to be amazing, they've had a complete refit." The council said the refurbishment would include new fitness equipment and showers, a refit of the changing rooms and new flooring. Chris Ord, partnership manager at GLL, said people would be able to register their interest online for a membership, though the costs were yet to be finalised. "We see Yarborough and Birchwood as great opportunities – they're really good centres in the heart of Lincoln and we need to make sure we bring them back to life and get them back used by the community," he said. The organisation was still looking to recruit more lifeguards and fitness instructors, Mr Ord added. Lincolnshire schools are due to break up for summer on 23 July. At the time of the leisure centre closures, Active Nation, a charity based in Warwickshire, blamed "the ongoing utility crisis and the challenges it has created" for the decision to cease trading. The council said it had offered the charity a support package of almost £500,000 over two years, with conditions attached, but this had not been taken up. Faulty M62 bridge joints 'a surprise for everybody'
A National Highways manager has said newly fitted joints on a bridge that turned out to be faulty came as "a surprise for everybody". Drivers have faced more than two years of delays since repairs to the M62 Ouse Bridge, near Goole, started in March 2022. Eight damaged joints that took more than two years to fix now need to be replaced as a "precautionary measure". Phil Jepps, programme delivery manager at National Highways, said it was "difficult to say" when the bridge would be fixed and finally free from repairs. Mr Jepps told BBC Look North: "It's not what [I] or anyone else expected. "The joints were completed in October and in the early hours of the Monday morning a member of the public reported that part of the joint plate had been detached." Mr Jepps said the manufacturer and installer of the joints had visited the site and said it was "something that they've never seen before". "It is quite a surprise for everybody that this has actually happened," he added. He said the issue was being investigated thoroughly and that National Highways was working closely with the principal contractor. Mr Jepps confirmed that National Highways and the taxpayer "won't be footing the bill". The motorway remains open with three lanes but further lane closures will be put in place to ensure all the other joints are fine, he said. Yorkshire Dales approves ban for new properties as holiday lets
Rules to prevent new houses in the Yorkshire Dales from being used as holiday homes have been Yorkshire Dales National Park Authority (YDNPA) is proposing that any new housing must be used as the occupier's permanent to the 2021 census, around 22% of up to 13,100 homes in the park area were either vacant, holiday lets or second Twine, chairman of YDNPA, said that was an "exceptionally high level of under-occupied housing" when compared to a national average of 6%. "Everyone would recognise that house building must be done particularly sensitively in a national park [and] we've worked hard to identify and allocate land for development," he said."What our Local Plan policy for permanent occupancy means is that on sites of two or more dwellings, new homes will be restricted to principal occupancy only."This will avoid loss to the holiday market and ensure that new homes are lived in by people who can be socially and economically active in local communities, which is what we need."At a meeting at the YDNPA headquarters in Bainbridge on Tuesday, members agreed to submit the new Local Plan - which would run until 2040 - for approval to the government's Planning authority also formally adopted a set of objectives for an updated management plan, which include an aim to reduce the proportion of so-called under-occupied homes in the park to fewer than 20% by to the Local Democracy Reporting Service, it is hoped North Yorkshire Council's premium on council tax for second homes will work with the new occupancy restriction to help meet this target. The management plan aims to guide the work of all the organisations that operate in the national park during the next five Twine added: "The Yorkshire Dales National Park Management Plan is a genuine partnership plan."It sets out an ambitious – but necessary – programme of work to which many local organisations have committed their support."Whilst it rightly focuses on tackling the challenges of climate change and the continuing decline in nature, it also identifies other opportunities to foster the social and economic wellbeing of local communities, by setting out objectives for more affordable housing, hyper-fast broadband access, and support for viable farming businesses."Mr Twine said he hoped that with each five-year review, the management plan would become more embedded in the culture of all organisations working in the park.
