LSU football recruiting: Priority Louisiana defensive line target reveals decision date
Texas, Florida and Tennessee make up the rest of McKinley's suitors. He will be one of two LSU targets to make his decision public this weekend, preceding Deuce Geralds' announcement on August 2.
Rivals' Prediction Machine lists LSU as the heavy favorite days ahead of McKinley's announcement. A three-star prospect per Rivals' Industry Rankings, McKinley ranks No. 48 at his position and No. 16 out of Louisiana.
The Lafayette native plays high school football at Acadiana and is the younger brother of current Tiger defensive tackle Dominick McKinley. Darryus' commitment would add another set of brothers to the roster, joining Whit and West Weeks as well as Ben and Brett Bordelon.
McKinley's latest visit to LSU came on July 28, his only visit since March. The Tigers are likely to add him to their 2026 class, which ranks fifth in the SEC and eighth nationally. McKinley would strengthen LSU's strong defensive line crop, which already includes Lamar Brown and Richard Anderson.

College football viewer's guide: Which teams have the toughest schedules in 2025?
There are more than a few fan bases sweating their team's schedule ahead of the 2025 college football season. With imbalanced scheduling thanks to power conference expansion, some teams are facing an extremely bad draw this season. Schedules like what Purdue, Syracuse and UCLA have in the coming months are why you can't judge a college football team solely on its win-loss record. Here are eight teams with the toughest schedules this season. A playoff berth for a team like LSU or Oklahoma would be well-earned in 2025. [Join or create a Yahoo Fantasy Football league for the 2025 NFL season] Arkansas Sam Pittman may need a winning season to keep his job in Fayetteville. And a winning season looks really difficult for the Razorbacks. Arkansas' over/under is 5.5 wins thanks to another tough draw and a non-conference schedule that's one of the toughest in the SEC. The Razorbacks travel to Memphis on Sept. 27 and then host Notre Dame a week later. The Tigers are a potential playoff team if they win the AAC. In the SEC, Arkansas travels to Ole Miss, Tennessee, LSU and Texas while getting Texas A&M and Missouri at home. That's six teams with at least 10 wins in 2024 on the schedule this year along with two potential SEC title game contenders in the Aggies and the Tigers from Baton Rouge. LSU No offense to Arkansas, but the Razorbacks currently don't stand out on LSU's 2025 schedule. The Tigers open the season on the road at Clemson, a team that should be one of the top favorites to win the national title. It's imperative LSU gets off to a good start. The Tigers have lost their first game of the season in each of the past five seasons since going undefeated in 2019. That stretch includes two straight losses to Florida State in 2022 and 2023 and a loss to USC to start the 2024 season. Florida visits Tiger Stadium in Week 3 and the schedule also includes trips to Ole Miss, Alabama and Oklahoma along with home games against South Carolina and Texas A&M. Mississippi State When you're at the bottom of the SEC, you're automatically facing one of the toughest schedules in the country. And it's hard to see how Jeff Lebby is going to get the first conference win of his MSU coaching career in 2025 without a massive upset. The Bulldogs' home schedule features games against Tennessee, Texas, Georgia and the season-ending rivalry game with Ole Miss while the road slate has trips to Texas A&M, Florida and Missouri. Oh, defending Big 12 champion Arizona State also comes to Starkville as part of a home-and-home series between the two schools. Good luck, Bulldogs fans. Oklahoma We're high on Oklahoma ahead of the 2025 season. The Sooners offense should be much, much better with offensive coordinator Ben Arbuckle and quarterback John Mateer arriving from Washington State. The defense was really good in 2024 and should be again in 2025. It just couldn't make up for the deficiencies at quarterback and injuries elsewhere on the offense a year ago. If Oklahoma is a playoff contender this season, it will be on the right side of any and all strength of schedule arguments barring a lot of surprises. The Sooners host Michigan in Week 2 and their final seven games of the season are a gauntlet. After the annual rivalry game vs. Texas in Dallas, Oklahoma plays at South Carolina, Ole Miss, at Tennessee, at Alabama, Missouri and LSU to end the season. Purdue Barry Odom's rebuilding job at Purdue is going to take a little bit. The Boilermakers were perhaps the worst power conference team in the country in 2024. Their only win came in Week 1 against FCS Indiana State. With games against Ball State and Southern Illinois to open the season, Purdue should start 2-0. From there, it gets rough. Purdue hosts USC and then visits Notre Dame before September is even over. October includes a home game vs. playoff sleeper Illinois and November looks rough. The Boilermakers open the month with back-to-back games against Michigan and Ohio State before ending the season against Washington and Indiana. Syracuse The Orange had an incredibly strong 10-3 record in Fran Brown's first season at the helm. Getting to double-digit wins in 2025 will be an even bigger achievement with an offense that's almost entirely brand new. Syracuse opens the season in Atlanta against Tennessee and visits Clemson in Week 4 before finishing September against a Duke team that won nine games in 2024. In addition to that trip to Death Valley, Syracuse also goes to SMU, Georgia Tech, Miami and Notre Dame. That's an incredibly daunting road schedule and the home schedule isn't a cakewalk either. The Orange also get Pitt, North Carolina and Boston College at the dome in ACC play. UCLA The Bruins' first season in the Big Ten ended at 5-7. It was also DeShaun Foster's first year as head coach after Chip Kelly's departure to Ohio State. If UCLA gets back to a bowl game in 2025, the Bruins will have probably pulled an upset or two over the course of the season. UCLA hosts Utah — a favorite in the Big 12 after a down year in 2024 — to open the season and has a sneakily tough game at UNLV in Week 2. The Rebels made the Mountain West title game in 2024. From there, the schedule includes Penn State, Ohio State, Indiana, Nebraska, Washington and USC. That's three teams from last year's College Football Playoff and three others who have hopes of being in the mix in the Big Ten title race. Wisconsin The Luke Fickell era at Wisconsin has resulted in 12 wins in two seasons. Six wins in 2025 could be a massive accomplishment. Wisconsin may have the toughest schedule in college football in 2025. The Badgers visit Alabama in Week 3 after getting obliterated at home by the Crimson Tide in 2024. And Wisky's Big Ten schedule is flat-out rough. Wisconsin visits Michigan, Oregon and Indiana, and hosts Ohio State and Illinois. If that's not bad enough, the Badgers end the season with a game at Minnesota. The Gophers have won three of the last four rivalry contests. It could be a really rough season in Madison.

LSU football legend Marcus Spears makes bolds statement about Brian Kelly's future
Expectations are high for LSU football in 2025. And with high expectations comes pressure. LSU head coach Brian Kelly is entering year four with the program. His tenure so far includes two 10-win seasons, but he's yet to lead LSU to a College Football Playoff. LSU signed the No. 1-ranked transfer class and retained quarterback Garrett Nussmeier. This is a talented roster and it was good enough to earn LSU a top-10 ranking in the initial coaches' poll. The hype train is rolling and former LSU football star Marcus Spears knows what that means for Kelly. "If you don't win big, if you're Brian Kelly, this fan base is done. And I'm just telling you, the wins and the success and all of the things, going to the SEC championship, your first year was great, but people still didn't feel like that was a big time accomplishment based on how it happened," Marcus Spears said. Spears referred to 2022, where LSU won the SEC West but was out of the playoff discussion thanks to a 9-3 regular season record. "This year, you see all of the transfers, you see the recruiting class, Garrett Nussmeier in the preseason Heisman conversation," Spears said, "All of those things in the past at LSU has aligned with them having big seasons." Spears said if LSU doesn't make the playoff, the fan base "is going to turn quickly on Brian Kelly." Spears' comments won't be news to Kelly. Every man who has held the head coaching position at LSU is familiar with the pressure. Ed Orgeron didn't shy away from talking about it during his tenure. Neither has Kelly. Ranking top 5 matchups based on the US LBM coaches poll
The 2025 college football season is fast approaching, and with it comes a season that could be full of surprises and intrigue. The US LBM coaches poll has given the casual fan a blueprint not just to the mindset of those within the college football landscape, but also a guide to what could be the matchups that could define the season at large. From early non-conference battles to the chaotic nature of the Big Ten, these five games will be the ones to watch this year, whether you are a diehard fan of these programs or just a neutral observer. 5. No. 6 Clemson vs No. 9 LSU, Week 1 The first Week 1 game on this list, this is also the matchup with perhaps the two most experienced QBs on this list. Cade Klubnik is coming off a breakout campaign and in his third year as the starter, has the second best odds for the Heisman. Garrett Nussmeier though, could be right on his heels. In his second season starting for the Tigers, if he follows in the footsteps of guys like Jayden Daniels and Joe Burrow, chances are LSU could make a deep run in the CFP. While certainly not the most mouth-watering Week 1 contest, Klubnik vs. Nussmeier is sure to please the neutral viewers. Get your popcorn ready for fireworks in SC. 4. No. 3 Penn State vs No. 19 Indiana, Week 9 As Penn State fans will soon see, their squad will be heavily featured on this list. That is the result of perhaps the most hyped-up preseason coverage the Nittany Lions have ever received. They have returned the bulk of their starters and a championship game appearance is expected, not desired. The first potential roadblock in that quest(at least on this list) are a pesky Indiana side looking to sustain their stunning success from last season. While Kurtis Rourke and Justice Ellison are no longer in Bloomington, Fernando Mendoza's transfer from Cal at the very least gives this Hoosiers squad yet another serviceable arm. Mikail Kamara's return after forgoing the draft also can be impactful on their defensive success. This game won't be a cakewalk for Drew Allar and after a game against the Buckeyes the previous week. 3. No. 3 Penn State vs. No. 7 Oregon, Week 4 Even before Penn State gets to that tough two-game stretch midseason, they have a bone to pick with with the team from Eugene. After losing in heartbreaking fashion in the Big Ten championship game, the Nittany Lions are out for revenge, and this time will have the home field advantage. Even more importantly, this is the Whiteout game and the first Big Ten matchup of the season for the team. Beaver Stadium will be electric, and the team are sure to be amped up by the atmosphere. Meanwhile, the Ducks may not be the same squad as last year, but if Dante Moore is just serviceable enough, then Oregon could cause Penn State some problems. Experience will matter a lot in this one and Drew Allar must prove he's ready to deliver. After a easy three-game slate to start the year, this game starts Penn State's trial by fire. 2. No. 3 Penn State vs No. 2 Ohio State, Week 8 Speaking of trial by fire in the Big Ten, this will still prove to be the Nittany Lion's toughest test. Penn State haven't beaten the Buckeyes in almost a decade, and it's beginning to take a psychological toll. They had perhaps their best chance last season to vanquish those demons, but poor red zone execution cost them late. This time around, they will have gained a bit of momentum with four Big Ten games under their belt and a potential home victory under their belt over Oregon. Most importantly, they have the slight experience at almost every position. That does not mean this will be easy sledding. Presumptive starter Julian Sayin still has the best WR corps in the nation to throw to and Caleb Downs will be marshaling one of the scariest secondaries Penn State will see all year. Allar and Co. must prove their mettle yet again here, because unlike against Indiana and Oregon, he won't have his home support behind him. 1. No. 1 Texas vs No. 2 Ohio State, Week 1 If this game didn't already have this much hype surrounding it, the coaches poll gave it all the prime billing. A rematch of the CFP semifinal where Texas was one play away from forcing overtime, but with new faces at the helm. The first game of the Arch Manning regime, and it's on the road in one of the most hostile environments in college sports. Julian Sayin looking to make himself a fan favorite and quick with the weight of the world on his shoulders. Neither team would want it either way. Ever since Sark's arrival on the Forty Acres, he has made it his mission for Texas to go anywhere in the country and take the scalps of big nonconference foes. He did it to Alabama 2 years ago and Michigan last year. If he can do it this year, with one of the most hyped QB prospects ever, Arch's legend will only grow. On the other side, Ryan Day will be trying to build off of his first ever championship while slightly retooling his squad throughout the year. While not the biggest game of their season, the Buckeyes are still looking to prove a point. It's anyone's guess how this will all turn out come August 30th.
