Strategic projects set to drive development in Selangau, assures assemblyman
SELANGAU (July 14): Several strategic development projects are meant for implementation in Selangau.
In giving this assurance, Tamin assemblyman Christopher Gira lists a mini sports complex, upgrading works on an access road to Selangau Bazaar, and the construction of stretches connecting Rumah Uban and Ulu Mukah as well as Nanga Selangau and Rumah Dinggai, as among those being planned for the district.
'These various new development initiatives will drive rural development,' he said in officiating at the 'Mangkung Tiang' (housewarming) in Rumah Lawang Umpon, Bukit Baru Sungai Melinau here last Saturday.
Organised by the village development and security committee (JKKK) of Bukit Baru Sungai Melinau, the programme meant to revive the custom symbolising the beginning of life in a new longhouse, as well as the spirit of family, unity and the continuity of ancestral culture of the Iban community.
Adding on, Gira also congratulated the residents of Rumah Lawang for their efforts in building a modern, organised and comfortable longhouse.
He described the success as a positive sign of the economic growth of rural communities, and also an 'evidence' of the effectiveness of the state government's development policies under the ruling coalition, Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS).
'This longhouse is not only a symbol of culture, but also a symbol of shared success.
'We want to see longhouses not just as a physical heritage, but also as active and developed community centres.'
Gira also stressed the importance of electrical safety in longhouses, calling for the existing wiring system be upgraded further.
'This measure is aimed at reducing the risk of overloading that can cause fires, in line with the increase in electricity consumption in today's longhouses,' he added.
Later at the event, Gira presented Minor Rural Programme (MRP) allocations totalling RM369,000 to 25 recipients including longhouse JKKKs, local sports and youth associations, and educational institutions.
The assemblyman also announced an additional special allocation of RM25,000 for Rumah Lawang in support of its community activities.
Sibu Rural District Council (SRDC) chairman Sempurai Petrus Ngelai was among those present. christopher gira development projects lead Selangau

MACC's apology insincere, says family of Teoh Beng Hock
PETALING JAYA: The family of Teoh Beng Hock says they do not accept the apology from the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) regarding his death. Beng Hock's sister, Lee Lan said the family viewed the apology as insincere because no action has been taken against the officers involved. "The family feels slighted over the insincerity of the apology by the MACC. They said that they are apologising because they see our pain but they are not surrendering the five officers that we believed were involved. This apology is not sincere because there was no further action taken on them. "Their offer for a contribution is also shameful because we do not want money, we want the truth," she said at a press conference at the Kuala Lumpur and Selangor Chinese Assembly Hall here on Wednesday (July 16). Earlier, chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki said MACC apologised to Beng Hock's family for the ordeal that they went through. "I wish to express my deepest sympathies and extend an apology to the family of the late Teoh Beng Hock for the pain and suffering they have endured over the years. "The MACC also acknowledges that, on May 12, 2015, the government paid RM600,000 in compensation to the family along with an additional RM60,000 in legal costs as a full and final settlement under Sections 7 and 8 of the Civil Law Act 1956. "Nevertheless, as a gesture of compassion, the MACC is prepared to provide a goodwill contribution to the late Teoh's family for the purpose of supporting the welfare and educational needs of his child," he said. He added that reforms were being conducted even though insufficient evidence to charge any suspects was found in lieu of the most recent investigation into the death. Teoh Beng Hock was found dead on July 16, 2009, at Plaza Masalam in Shah Alam after giving a statement at the Selangor MACC office.

NGO: Azam's apology to Teoh family shows compassion
KUALA LUMPUR: The apology tendered by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Chief Commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki to the family of the late Teoh Beng Hock showed compassion on part of the graft-busters, a non-governmental organisation leader said today. Rapera Movement founder Datuk Seri Dr Jahaberdeen Mohamed Yunoos said the apology was an exemplary move by Azam. "The apology tendered by Tan Sri Azam Baki to the family of the late Teoh Beng Hock and the additional compensation is a good initiative and compassionate move by the MACC. "Though he doesn't have to do so legally, such a compassionate initiative ought to be followed by other government agencies where relevant," he said in a statement today. Earlier, MACC announced that the commission was prepared to offer a goodwill contribution to the family of the late Teoh Beng Hock to support the welfare and educational needs of his child. This follows findings from investigations into Teoh's death, which had spanned the past 16 years. Azam acknowledged the outcomes of previous probes, including the Royal Commission of Inquiry in 2011, the Court of Appeal's ruling in 2014, and the most recent police investigation, which had been classified as "No Further Action" (NFA) by the Attorney-General's Chambers. The commission also acknowledged that, on May 12, 2015, the government had paid RM600,000 in compensation to Teoh's family, along with an additional RM60,000 in legal costs as a full and final settlement under Sections 7 and 8 of the Civil Law Act 1956.

Johor Seeks Federal Funds For Housing, Flood Mitigation, Waste Management Projects
JOHOR BAHRU, July 16 (Bernama) -- The Johor state government has submitted funding applications to the Ministry of Housing and Local Government (KPKT) for several key projects involving public housing, flood mitigation, and modern solid waste management. State Housing and Local Government Committee chairman Datuk Mohd Jafni Md Shukor said the requests were presented during an official meeting with KPKT secretary-general Datuk Wira M Noor Azman Taib in Putrajaya today. The top priority, he said, was securing funds for the phased rejuvenation of the Taman Ungku Tun Aminah (TUTA) flats, which are in need of long-term maintenance and upgrades. 'This initiative is vital to ensure that older low-cost housing remains safe, comfortable, and habitable for residents,' he said in a Facebook post. Mohd Jafni added that Johor is also seeking approval to develop 1,000 housing units under the Syarikat Perumahan Negara Berhad (SPNB) programme, with the state government committing RM20,000 per unit as part of a cost-sharing initiative to help more people own homes. He said a special request was also made for funds to address flood-prone areas identified as high-risk zones across the state. He urged KPKT to approve phased interventions ahead of the monsoon season to protect vulnerable communities. Another proposal focused on the Waste-to-Energy (WTE) project in Bukit Payong, which is expected to become a major driver of sustainable solid waste management in Johor by incorporating green technology. 'All these proposals are part of a clear and focused effort to improve the quality of life for Johoreans and strengthen the state's infrastructure. 'These initiatives align with the broader vision of Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi under the 'MAJU JOHOR' agenda — to build a modern, resilient state that puts the people first in every policy and implementation,' he added.
