PM: Time to reset Southeast Asia–Europe ties on equal terms

PARIS: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim in a bold remark called for the need to redefine the terms of engagement between Southeast Asia and Europe, as equals, as co-creators, and as partners in both ties and trade, in a world yearning for balance.
While no doubt France and Europe at large have made tremendous progress be it in the area of culture, renewable energy, biodiversity initiatives as well as political philosophy and governance, Southeast Asia also has its own set of achievements, he said.
Today, the advancements in Southeast Asia may be gleaned from the trajectory of growth of Asean itself which is no doubt a manifestation of the fruition of Asean economic integration," he said during his lecture entitled: "Southeast Asia and Europe: Recalibrating The Terms of Engagement" at Sorbonne University Paris.
Anwar pointed out that the region has tremendously promoted intra-regional trade and investment, enhanced the economic resilience and competitiveness of member countries.
Furthermore, there is much to be lauded in terms of Asean's focus on regional diplomacy and cooperation, as a hallmark of its centrality and progressive multilateralism, said Anwar.
He said barring the crisis in Myanmar, this has yielded momentous progress in helping to address inter-state tensions, manage conflicts and promote collective decision-making in regional crises.
On the other hand, the Russian invasion of Ukraine has not only shaken the continent's sense of security, but also its assumptions - about deterrence, dependence and the durability of peace.
"A war many thought impossible became a reckoning that shattered the illusion of permanence and reminded us that even in the heart of Europe, history still breathes.
"But we do not forget that while history may liberate, it may also incarcerate.
"Hence, Europe finds itself grappling with uncertainty in its oldest alliance.
"As debates over military spending and collective resolve unfold, the ballast of the transatlantic compact is being tested in ways not seen for generations.
"The European project, conceived to bury war through integration, now finds itself reimagining its defence, its technological sovereignty, and its energy security," said Anwar.
On that backdrop, while Southeast Asia welcomes Europe's engagement and the deepening of its presence in the region, including through its growing ties with Asean, it must be done right on equal terms, he said.
"We believe this is the right moment for an open and thoughtful conversation about the terms of our partnership – grounded not in hierarchy, but in mutual respect and understanding," he said.
Touching on trade, Anwar, who is also the finance minister, stressed that it should be a bridge, not a barrier.
"For Southeast Asia and Europe to build a meaningful partnership, our economic engagement must be guided by the same principles we ask of security: respect, flexibility and restraint."
He said Southeast Asia fully respects Europe's right to regulate in ways that reflect its values.
"But when those regulations shut others out, even unintentionally, we must speak openly about the consequences.
"We do not ask for indulgence. We ask only that Europe meet us where we are, not where its models presume we ought to be.
"What we seek is not favours, but fairness. Not exemption, but equity," said Anwar.
Hence, while Southeast Asia welcomes partnerships with Europe, Anwar was firm in stating that it should be on the basis of mutual respect and equality.
The region rejects condescending attitudes, geopolitical containment strategies, and the imposition of external fears onto our region, he added.

Anwar Champions Kota MADANI As Model For Modern, Values-Based Living

Prime Minister and Finance Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has described the Kota MADANI project as more than a housing initiative for civil servants, framing it as a holistic urban development rooted in the principles of Malaysia MADANI. Speaking during his monthly address to staff at the Prime Minister's Department, Anwar stressed that the RM4 billion project is not just about providing homes, but about creating a well-planned, liveable city that integrates essential infrastructure such as schools, mosques, playgrounds and gyms. 'This is not an ordinary housing project. We are offering an extraordinary comfort level. Everything is taken into consideration – from schools to mosques to recreational facilities – all in one modern city built on MADANI values,' he said. Launched on 26 June, the Kota MADANI development in Precinct 19, Putrajaya is being driven as a people- and eco-friendly smart city. The first phase is scheduled to begin construction in September and is expected to complete by end-2027. Spanning 10,000 high-density residential units to accommodate more than 30,000 people, the development will also feature a secondary school and various public amenities. It is being undertaken by Putrajaya Holdings Sdn Bhd (PjH) under a public-private partnership model – build, lease, maintain and transfer (BLMT) – without initial government expenditure. Anwar defended the project against politically motivated criticism, urging the public and civil service to view it as a long-term initiative designed with fiscal prudence and managerial capability through Perbadanan Putrajaya (PPj). He also commended PPj for repairing nearly 98% of damaged civil servant quarters, while acknowledging that demand for housing remains high. Related

PM to push trade ties at BRICS Summit in Brazil

PETALING JAYA: Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim will have a packed programme in Brazil with the highlight being his participation in the 17th BRICS Summit. Malaysia's acting head of mission in Brazil Datuk Mohammad Ali Selamat said the Prime Minister will arrive in the Brazilian capital of Rio de Janeiro today at the invitation of President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva. He said Anwar will participate in the Presidential Panel session during the BRICS Business Forum. 'The event will be attended by Brazil's president and is expected to include leaders of BRICS member countries,' he said in a virtual interview with selected Malaysian media from the Brazilian capital. The BRICS Business Forum will bring together over 1,000 business leaders, government officials, international organisations and experts from the countries concerned along with other invited nations, to foster economic and international trade cooperation, besides sustainable development. Held annually on the sidelines of the BRICS Summit, the forum aims to offer private sector perspectives to BRICS leaders on tackling shared challenges and advancing common business priorities. Mohamad Ali said the Prime Minister, who is making his second visit to Brazil, is also scheduled to hold meetings with corporate leaders from Brazil and Malaysia on business and investment opportunities. He will then attend the 17th BRICS Leaders Summit at the Museum of Modern Art, and deliver Malaysia's national statement during the session on Strengthening Multilateralism, Economic-Financial Affairs and Artificial Intelligence. Anwar, who earlier concluded official visits to Italy and France, is also scheduled to attend a dinner reception for heads of state and government hosted by President Lula. On Monday, Anwar will deliver Malaysia's national statement during the session on Environment, The 30th Conference of Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (U CCC-COP30), and Global Health. 'The PM is also expected to hold bilateral meetings with heads of BRICS member and partner countries on the sidelines of the summit,' Mohammad Ali said. 'The participation of the Prime Minister provides an opportunity to highlight Malaysia's policies and continued commitment to inclusive and sustainable development, as well as our Asean Chairmanship priorities for 2025,' he added.
