Zahid confirms no going solo, Umno to contest GE16 under BN

Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi speaking to party members at the Lumut divisional meeting today. (Bernama pic) LUMUT : Umno will not contest the next general election on its own, party president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi confirmed today, saying the party will remain a component of Barisan Nasional for the elections. Umno would continue to contest the general election (GE16) under BN's dacing (scales) symbol without sidelining partners such as MCA, MIC, Parti Bersatu Rakyat Sabah and its unity government partner Pakatan Harapan. Saying Umno had never contested on its own in the past, Zahid dismissed claims that the party's losses in several by-elections were due to its partnerships with other parties in BN and with Pakatan Harapan. '(The suggestion to contest solo) was not only brought up in Kedah — yesterday I was in Johor, and it was the same sentiment, urging us to go solo,' he said at the Lumut Umno divisional meeting today. 'There are resolutions from some divisions implying that our defeats stem from having allies in BN and PH … that we've been at a disadvantage because we did not contest alone,' he said. Yesterday, Umno secretary-general Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki had also stated that the party would not go solo at the general election as the party had never done so despite the changing political dynamics.

PM Anwar Meets Top Officials From Shanghai-based New Development Bank, Eyes Possible Membership

From Arul Rajoo Durar Raj RIO DE JANEIRO, July 6 (Bernama) -- Malaysia will conduct a comprehensive review of potential membership in the New Development Bank (NDB), taking into account various aspects, including the required commitments and the effectiveness of participation in the institution, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. He made the statement after holding a meeting with senior officials of the NDB - formerly known as the BRICS Development Bank - here today. Anwar met the Shanghai-based NDB delegation, led by its president Dilma Rousseff, on the sidelines of the BRICS Leaders' Summit being held here. As a multilateral development bank established by developing countries, the NDB offers a competitive financing alternative, in line with Malaysia's aspiration to diversify infrastructure development sources and accelerate the transition to a green economy. "Malaysia will thoroughly review the possibility of joining the NDB, taking into account various aspects, including the required commitments and the effectiveness of participation in the institution," he said in a statement here. The Prime Minister also took the opportunity during the meeting to congratulate Rousseff on her reappointment and expressed Malaysia's openness to exploring potential cooperation with the NDB within the framework of sustainable development, infrastructure financing, and the strengthening of South-South cooperation. NDB is a multilateral development bank established by the BRICS nations. It currently has 11 members, namely Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, Bangladesh, the United Arab Emirates, Egypt, Algeria, Colombia and Uzbekistan. Malaysia's participation in the summit is in its capacity as a BRICS Partner Country and as Chair of ASEAN 2025. Malaysia officially became a BRICS Partner Country on Jan 1 this year. — BERNAMA

31st Lanzhou investment and trade fair draws global participation

LANZHOU, July 6 (Xinhua) - The 31st China Lanzhou Investment and Trade Fair opened on Sunday in Lanzhou, the capital of northwest China's Gansu Province, attracting over 2,000 domestic and international enterprises. This year's fair features Indonesia as its guest country of honor. Participation has surpassed previous fairs, with representatives of over 20 nations, including Germany, Spain, Russia, Malaysia and Iran, attending alongside representatives of 18 Chinese municipalities, provinces and autonomous regions, as well as the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region. The fair has four exhibition zones -- covering international Silk Road cooperation, regional exchange, consumer goods, and featured Gansu industries -- showcasing products across the fields of equipment manufacturing, petrochemicals, biomedicine, new materials, new energy, aerospace, agriculture, and data information, according to its organizers. More than 30 forums and trade events have been scheduled for the fair. Indonesian Ambassador to China Djauhari Oratmangun noted that Indonesia's 16 attending enterprises were presenting coffee, foods, handicrafts and traditional batik, and expressed the hope that the two countries would deepen cooperation on renewable energy, modern agriculture and cultural tourism. As Gansu's flagship international economic event since 1993, the fair has this year secured deals for 1,181 investment projects totaling over 650 billion yuan (about 90.9 billion U.S. dollars) in sectors such as new energy equipment, agricultural processing, new materials, and digital technology.
