Astronomer CEO resigns after viral Coldplay 'kiss cam' incident

Andy Byron, the CEO of New York-based tech firm Astronomer, has resigned after he was spotted embracing a colleague at a Coldplay concert, the company confirmed in a statement on Saturday.
The video, which quickly went viral earlier this week, captured Byron and Kristin Cabot, Astronomer's Chief People Officer, embracing on the 'kiss cam' at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts.
The pair ducked out of view after appearing on the screen, fueling speculation across social media platforms.
Astronomer's board of directors has accepted Byron's resignation and announced that a search is underway for a permanent replacement.
In the interim, Pete DeJoy, the company's co-founder and Chief Product Officer, will assume the role of CEO.
In a LinkedIn post earlier this week, Astronomer addressed the incident directly, denying that Byron had issued any public statement and dismissing reports suggesting otherwise.
The company also clarified the misidentification of a third individual seen in the video, who had been mistakenly linked to the situation online.
'As stated previously, Astronomer is committed to the values and culture that have guided us since our founding,' the company said in a follow-up statement on Saturday.
'Our leaders are expected to set the standard in both conduct and accountability, and recently, that standard was not met.'
Byron's LinkedIn profile has since been deactivated, and his name has been removed from Astronomer's official leadership page, where DeJoy is now listed as CEO.
However, Byron is still listed as a board member on the company's website as of Saturday.
Founded in 2018, Astronomer specialises in data operations and solutions for artificial intelligence infrastructure.
While the company acknowledged that its visibility has 'changed overnight' due to the incident, it reiterated its focus remains on solving complex data challenges.

Scatec clinches preferred bidder status for R13bn solar cluster in Free State

The project, known as the Kroonstad PV cluster, is expected to operate under 20-year Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs), ensuring a steady supply of sustainable energy once completed. Image: Supplied Norway-based renewable energy group, Scatec ASA, has been awarded preferred bidder status for a R13 billion solar cluster project in in the Free State province, which will add a total of 846MW to the electricity grid. In a statement on Wednesday, Scatec confirmed it had been awarded preferred bidder status in the seventh round of the Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme (REIPPPP). The project, known as the Kroonstad PV cluster, is expected to operate under 20-year Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs), ensuring a steady supply of sustainable energy once completed. This latest development follows the Department of Electricity and Energy's strategic re-allocation of energy capacity from onshore wind to solar photovoltaic (PV) solutions. The cluster will comprise three solar power plants, Oslaagte Solar 2 (293MW), Oslaagte Solar 3 (293MW), and Leeuwspruit Solar (260MW). The estimated total project cost for the solar cluster project is R13bn ($735 million). The projects will be financed with up to 90% non-recourse project debt and the remaining by equity from the owners. Scatec CEO, Terje Pilskog, said South Africa was one of the group's core markets with the latest award the largest megawatt award to date in the country. 'It excites me to announce another important milestone for Scatec in South Africa and for the country's renewable energy transition. The Kroonstad PV Cluster represents a significant addition to Scatec's growing renewable energy footprint in Sub-Saharan Africa," Pilskog said. "Being selected once again under the REIPPPP reaffirms our role as a trusted partner and a leading developer in the region. We commend the government's continued commitment to enabling clean, secure, and affordable energy." Scatec will own 50.90% of the equity in the project with Stanlib's infrastructure fund (through its renewable energy platform, Greenstreet), along with Redstreet owning 46.50% and a Community Trust holding 2.6%. Scatec will provide engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC), operations and maintenance, and asset management services to the project. Financial close is expected in 2026. "We are now looking forward to reaching financial close and start construction of the PV cluster during 2026,' said Alberto Gambacorta, Scatec's executive vice-president and general manager for Sub-Saharan Africa. The group in December announced it had officially started producing and supplying electricity to the national grid from the three Kenhardt plants in the Northern Cape. The Kenhardt project, one of the world's first and largest hybrid solar and battery storage facilities, has an installed solar capacity of 540MW and a battery storage capacity of 225MW/1 140MWh. Scatec said the project delivers 150MW of dispatchable power from 5am to 9.30pm year-round to the national grid under a 20-year Power Purchase Agreement with Eskom. The group is also in an advanced stage of the three Grootfontein solar projects won as part of the Department of Mineral Resources' fifth bidding round of its REIPPPP in 2021. The solar power plants will be the first Scatec assets located in the Western Cape province of the country and have a total capacity of 273MW solar power. Once operational the projects will deliver much needed renewable energy under a 20-year Power Purchase Agreement. The three solar plants will lead to a combined abatement of 630 000 tons of CO2 emissions annually. BUSINESS REPORT

This remarkable figure is not just a testament to numerical achievement; it symbolises a prosperous evolution since the index began at just 100 points in January 1960, marking a staggering increase of 1 000 times over the past 65 years. The index's annualised returns have exceeded 11%, underscoring the resilience of South Africa's capital markets and positioning the JSE as one of the best-performing markets globally in both US dollar and rand terms for the year 2025. The bourse has been breaking records since the year began as it started 2025 on a high above 84 000 index points. By 11am on Wednesday, the ALSI was 1.2% high to 100 504 index points. Leila Fourie, Group CEO of the JSE, said reaching 100 000 points on the ALSI was not just a numerical milestone but a powerful reflection of the resilience, innovation and operational excellence of companies listed on the JSE. 'This landmark demonstrates that investors continue to place their trust in the South African market and in the ability of our listed companies to drive growth and deliver value,' Fourie said. Next Stay Close ✕ The JSE is currently ranked in the Top 20 largest stock exchanges in the world by market capitalisation, and is the largest stock exchange in Africa, having been in operation for 137 years. Elaborating on the development of the index, Mark Randall, director of information services, noted that the ALSI was redefined in 2002 through a strategic partnership with global index provider FTSE. Randall said the adoption of modern methodologies, such as free float weighting and a stable universe of 160 companies, transformed the index into a comprehensive snapshot of South Africa's market landscape. 'Today, the index represents 125 listed companies on the JSE with a combined market capitalisation of R21 trillion, spanning a diverse range of sectors and geographies. While the ALSI does not include every listed company, it remains a trusted benchmark, capturing 99% of the eligible market capitalisation on the JSE Main Board,' Randall said. 'It distils the daily performance of large, mid, and small-cap stocks into a single, accessible figure visible across media platforms and financial tickers, underscoring the strength of South Africa's equity market and the JSE's role as a gateway to African investment.' Since 2002, the ALSI has demonstrated robust long-term growth, successfully navigating global crises and fluctuations in commodity prices to achieve this historic milestone in 2025. The past five years, in particular, proved dynamic, as the index rebounded strongly from the lows of the pandemic. The resurgence was driven by booming commodities—gold and platinum, resilient corporate earnings, and a newfound optimism among investors. Key sectors, such as mining, banking and technology, contributed substantially to these gains, supported by structural reforms and fiscal stability, underscoring the JSE's position as a gateway to the African markets. The JSE reiterated its dedication to providing a transparent, efficient and secure platform for issuers and investors alike, further cementing its position as the gateway to African capital markets. 'We remain committed to advancing market development, improving access to capital for businesses of all sizes and ensuring that our exchange continues to evolve in line with international standards,' Fourie said. 'This milestone is a reminder of the important role the JSE plays in enabling companies to grow, innovate and create jobs, which ultimately benefits the broader economy.' BUSINESS REPORT

There is method to Liverpool's £300m Premier League spending spree madness

Florian Wirtz signs for Liverpool, the most expensive signing in Premier League History at a record-breaking £116m. Picture: AFP Image: AFP Former Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp was well-documented during his time at Anfield about his resistance to spending large sums of money on transfer fees. Klopp was famously quoted as saying: 'If you bring one player in for $100 million or whatever and he gets injured then it all goes through the chimney." 'The day that this is football, I'm not in a job anymore.' Klopp, of course, is no longer in the hot seat at the Reds, but even he's needed to change his tune as the Premier League champions have blown away their competitors during the current transfer window with a host of big-money signings, most notably Florian Wirtz. The German international cost Liverpool an initial £100 million, topped up by a further £16 million in potential add-ons, which makes Wirtz's total package not only the most expensive player in Liverpool history, but the Premier League's priciest ever player too. 'I know that I once said that I'm out if we pay £100 million for a player. But the world is changing. That's just the way the market is. There's no question about it, it's an insane sum.' Wirtz's capture is, though, only the headline-grabber in Liverpool's almost £300m spending spree that is the envy of their Premier League rivals at the moment. The imminent arrival of Hugo Ekitiké from Eintracht Frankfurt for £79m is further testament to the Fenway Sports Group's, Liverpool's Boston-based owner, ambitions to ensure last season's Premiership triumph is not a mere once-off, and is in fact the springboard to sustained success that Manchester City had achieved with their four successive titles in the preceding years. Liverpool's buying power has, of course, got tongues wagging on the social media channels with rival clubs' fans accusing the Reds of abandoning their club's traditions of buying smartly and building a cohesive unit into a championship-winning team. Nothing could be further from the truth as the rejuvenation of the squad under Arne Slot is fundamentally how Liverpool have always done business: self-sustainable. Even under Klopp, Liverpool brought the likes of Alisson (£66.8 million) and Virgil van Dijk (£75 million) to Anfield with the proceeds of Philippe Coutinho's £142m sale to Barcelona. Memories are short in football, and even shorter when the facts interfere with the narrative being projected that Liverpool have become the new Chelsea. There were no new arrivals in the red half of Merseyside for the past two January transfer windows of 2024 and 2025. Furthermore, in an almost unprecedented set of circumstances, new manager Slot spent just £10m on Juventus' Federico Chiesa - the sole player brought in last summer - ahead of his first season at Liverpool. That's notwithstanding the profits from the exits at Liverpool last season. There could possibly be further departures during this transfer window with Luiz Diaz speculated to be moving on for a base asking price of £86.8m, while Darwin Núñez (£55m), Harvey Elliott (£40m-plus), Chiesa (£10m) and Tyler Morton (£15m) are also on the radars of opposing clubs. Should any of these come to fruition, the Boston accountants' margins will only increase. Liverpool are not just leading on the pitch, but are showing their rivals the "Moneyball" blueprint on how to be successful off it too, which could just yet be the foundation of a Reds dynasty that could dominate English football for years to come.
