Dubai, UAE: Dubai Culture and Arts Authority (Dubai Culture) will host the third Makers' Month from 26-27 April at Earth Roastery in Al Quoz. This two-day festival brings together practitioners across disciplines for panel discussions, talks, field visits, and hands-on workshops, designed to sharpen skills and foster collaboration between manufacturing and the creative industries. This platform underlines Dubai Culture's commitment to nurturing a dynamic production ecosystem and spotlighting international best practices, while simultaneously reinforcing the emirate's position as a global centre for culture, an incubator for creativity, and a thriving hub for talent.
Khulood Khoory, Director of the Projects & Events Department at Dubai Culture, stressed how Makers' Month bridges creativity and industry. She said: 'Through our projects and strategic partnerships, we support the local manufacturing landscape by creating the right environment. We encourage them to explore Al Quoz Creative Zone's unique resources, investment opportunities, and proven models. Alhaan Ahmed, CEO and Co-Founder of ARDH, will lead a talk, 'Designers as Entrepreneurs: Crafting Sustainable and Desirable Solutions for the Future,' discussing the intersection of creativity and entrepreneurship in developing better ways of doing things. Lina Ghalib will reflect on her experience founding PlyPalm, an eco-friendly plywood alternative company, in 'Determining the Future of Everyday Objects.'
Khulood Khoory will also join Maysoon Al Shamsi, Founder of Creams Botanics and winner of the Al Quoz Creative Entrepreneurship Competition 2024, to outline the support mechanisms and opportunities available through the Al Quoz Creative Entrepreneurship Forum.
A dedicated ceramics panel, titled 'The Art and Business of Ceramics: Craft, Growth, and Community' will feature Nessma Djhouri, a Ceramicist at Lutum Ceramics, Dr Nina Heydemann, Director of Maraya Art Center, and Zade Ismael, Founder of Slō Ceramics. Dubai Design Week (DDW) will celebrate its 11th edition from November 4-9 under the patronage of Sheikha Latifa bint Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Chairperson of Dubai Culture & Arts Authority (Dubai Culture) and member of Dubai Council. The region's leading design festival and an annual celebration of creativity and culture, DDW is held in strategic partnership with Dubai Design District (d3), a member of TECOM Group PJSC, and supported by Dubai Culture. DDW 2025 coincides with the UAE's 'Year of Community'; this year's programme therefore reflects the theme through a focus on social cohesion, participation and shared experiences. Design will be explored not only as a practice of innovation, but as a social connector and as a civic and cultural tool that can shape how we live together, communicate, and build caring systems. Since 2015, DDW has grown into a global platform with an emphasis on cross-cultural exchange and on amplifying voices from West and South Asia, as well as the wider Global South (encompassing countries in Africa, Latin America, most of Asia and Oceania). Through exhibitions, fairs, large-scale installations, talks and workshops, the festival engages with contemporary narratives, creating a space for dialogue, experimentation and progress, harnessing its position as a regional melting pot and creative hub. Under the theme 'Courtyard', Urban Commissions calls on practitioners to reflect on a shared spatial form and explore its multifaceted role as a gathering place and community-led urban infrastructure. Abwab, meaning 'doors' in Arabic, is a long-running feature at DDW. Newly expanded to welcome applicants from across West, South and East Asia, as well as the African continent which are often unrepresented or unrepresented on global platforms, this year's theme, 'In the Details', invites practitioners to create immersive spatial experiences, engaging with historic cultural forms. Dubai Culture and Arts Authority (Dubai Culture) has wrapped up its participation in the UNESCO Creative Cities Network (UCCN) subnetwork meeting, a forum designed to deepen cooperation among cities that integrate creativity into urban development. The engagement reflects Dubai Culture's ongoing commitment to solidify Dubai's leadership and position on the international map as a global centre for culture, an incubator for creativity and a thriving hub for talent. During the meeting held in Saint-Étienne, France, Khulood Khoory, Director of the Projects and Events Department at Dubai Culture, delivered a presentation on best practices on resource and material innovation that explored how Dubai is harnessing local biomass from palm trees to shape tomorrow's materials. She outlined how the emirate is rethinking its natural resources, driving sustainable design innovation and advancing the principles of a circular economy, all in support of the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). On the sidelines of the meeting, Dubai took part in the 13th edition of the Biennale Internationale Design Saint-Étienne, showcasing works by Emirati creatives including 'Ramel' by designer Kholoud Sharafi and 'Tibrah' by product designer and architect Reema AlMheiri.
