Dubai Culture Launches Programme to Activate Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood
Dubai Culture and Arts Authority has unveiled a months-long cultural activation of Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood, aiming to spotlight the district's heritage and reintroduce it as a vibrant destination for both residents and tourists. Running until the end of December, the programme features a packed calendar of panel discussions, interactive workshops, community talks, and live craft demonstrations. It seeks to celebrate the UAE's traditions while engaging families, children, and culture seekers in preserving the city's rich legacy. A core element of the initiative is the 'Family Workshops' series, held on the first Saturday of each month. Events like 'Doors of Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood' on 28 June, and 'Barajeel and the Magic Brush' on 5 July, invite young participants to explore the district's architecture and cultural motifs. Traditional Emirati crafts take centre stage through live demonstrations curated by the Turath Centre for Traditional Handicrafts. Upcoming highlights include 'Gargoor-Making' on 12 July and 'The Palm Tree... A Legend of Tales' on 16 July, followed by weaving and sewing workshops in August. Mariam Al Tamimi, Acting Director of the Heritage Sites Department at Dubai Culture, said the programme reinforces Al Fahidi's role as a key cultural landmark. Dubai Launches 'Zad Rashid' Initiative to Foster Reading Culture Among Children
Dubai has launched the 'Zad Rashid' initiative to promote a love of reading among children and strengthen their national and linguistic identity, as part of a joint effort by the Community Development Authority (CDA) and Dubai Culture and Arts Authority. The initiative includes the distribution of 1,000 curated home libraries, each featuring 25 books, 80% by Emirati authors and 20% by Arab writers residing in the UAE. It aims to enrich young minds with culturally relevant stories and support local authors while reducing screen time. Launched under the theme 'Hand in Hand' and aligned with the 'Year of Community' campaign, 'Zad Rashid' highlights Dubai's commitment to nurturing a knowledge-driven society grounded in local values and heritage. To mark the launch, 25 families were gifted home libraries in recognition of their engagement with Dubai's public libraries. The initiative also includes a panel discussion on the importance of reading, bringing together authors, children, and parents to encourage literary dialogue. Hessa bint Essa Buhumaid, Director General of CDA, called it a long-term intellectual investment to embed reading habits and cultural identity among children. Hala Badri, Director-General of Dubai Culture, emphasized its role in empowering future generations through knowledge and creativity. Organised with the support of the Sikka Platform to strengthen the global presence of Emirati and UAE-based talent Dubai, UAE, June 2025: Dubai Culture and Arts Authority (Dubai Culture) has wrapped up the Japan Art & Culture Delegation Programme, an initiative supported by the Sikka Platform to expand opportunities for Emirati and UAE-based artists on the global stage. The programme offered participants the chance to engage deeply with Japan's leading art institutions and practitioners. As part of the Dubai Cultural Grant, under the Dubai Quality of Life Strategy, this trip reflects Dubai Culture's commitment to empowering creatives, enriching their experiences, and nurturing an environment that allows talent to thrive and innovate. Shaima Rashed Al Suwaidi, CEO of the Arts, Design and Literature Sector at Dubai Culture, affirmed that Dubai has effectively leveraged cultural diplomacy to build bridges across borders and reinforce its status as a global centre for the arts. She emphasised the importance of the UAE–Japan Creative Exchange, highlighting its role in fostering cross-border cooperation and intellectual knowledge sharing with universities, galleries, and art institutions worldwide. She said: 'This programme opens up new prospects for creatives, offering them opportunities to learn about diverse practices and benefit from academic expertise. Such exposure enables them to explore international trends, improve their modes of expression, and discover innovative ways to reflect the authenticity of our heritage and local identity. By nurturing this spirit of exploration, we are not only advancing Dubai's vision for a prominent place on the world stage but also supporting individuals on their journey to excellence and the growth of the creative economy. The 10-day programme brought together a distinguished group of Emirati creatives, including artist and curator Sheikh Maktoum bin Marwan Al Maktoum; designer and curator Kamla AlOlama; researcher and Senior Curatorial Assistant at Louvre Abu Dhabi Amna Al Zaabi; multidisciplinary artist Latifa Saeed; Fatma Al Ali whose work focuses on collective memory and oral history; graphic design professor Alanood Bukhammas from the College of Arts and Creative Enterprises at Zayed University; and artist and assistant professor Asma Belhamar, also from Zayed University alongside Lebanese artist and curator Ahmad Makary, founder of The Workshop DXB; and Bahraini artist and curator Yara Ayoob.

Her Highness Sheikha Latifa bint Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Chairperson of Dubai Culture, highlighted the significance of this achievement, stating it reflects Dubai's growing influence in the global art and digital innovation sectors. She attributed the city's cultural ascent to the vision of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum. ISEA, founded in 1988 and currently managed by the University for the Creative Arts in the UK, is a leading international platform where artists, technologists, and academics converge to explore the intersection of art, science, and technology.
