Ahmad Zahid Outlines Four Prerequisites To Retake Lumut

Barnama3 days ago
LUMUT, July 6 (Bernama) -- UMNO president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi outlined four preprequisites to enable the party to retake the Lumut parliamentary seat, along with the Pangkor and Pasir Panjang state seats in the upcoming 16th general election (GE16).
The prerequisites include unity and uniting the Lumut UMNO Division members and fostering ties with Barisan Nasional (BN) component members.
'Lumut UMNO and BN must be united, there's no room for discord. Our political enemy isn't strong, but internal weakness resulted in a lack of confidence in our own party that weakens our fight.

'The old culture of backstabbing, blaming leaders should stop immedately. The main prerequisite to winning is uniting Lumut UMNO Division,' he said during the officiation of the 2025 Lumut UMNO Division Delegates' meeting here today, in the presence of Perak UMNO liaison committee chairman Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad and Lumut UMNO Division chief Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abd Kadir.
Ahmad Zahid said that UMNO cannot retake the seats on their own but required help from compoment partners like MIC and MCA, and stressed that UMNO members have to abandon the old culture and prove to partners that the party has changed.
Ahmad Zahid also said that winning the social media battleground and approaching voters in more strategic ways were also prerequisites.

'Social media is the new battlefield. UMNO Youth and UMNO Puteri need to be champions in the digital narrative. Reach voters through relevant and convincing social media content is very important to rebuild public trust.
'This (GE16) is the last chance to retake all three seats in Lumut, don't waste it,' he added.

Zahid apologises for ‘angel' remark, says it was emotionally-driven

Ahmad Zahid Hamidi was seen in a viral video saying that even an angel would have fled if appointed Umno president during the party's most difficult times. (Facebook pic) PETALING JAYA : Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has apologised for a controversial remark he made in a recent speech, saying it was said in an emotional moment and might have caused confusion. In a video that has gone viral, Zahid is seen saying that even an angel would have fled if appointed Umno president during the party's most difficult times. 'The truth is, the statement came from a deeply emotional setting, as an attempt to describe how challenging the tests of leadership can be. 'However, I acknowledge that the comparison has created confusion and could be misinterpreted,' he said in a Facebook post. Zahid, who is also deputy prime minister, said he humbly sought forgiveness from Allah and apologised to everyone for what he said was a 'misstep' in his choice of words. 'As a Muslim and a leader of a party that upholds Islamic values, principles, and scholarly traditions, I sincerely seek forgiveness from Allah and apologise to all for this lapse. 'I accept all criticism with an open heart. I believe that a true leader is not only careful with his words, but also sincere in reflecting, improving, and learning from his mistakes,' he said. Earlier today, Harakahdaily quoted Kluang PAS chief Nor Mohamad as saying that Zahid's remark involving angels in the context of political leadership was 'excessive and inappropriate'. He said the statement should be examined seriously from the standpoint of Islamic creed and religious decorum. He also urged the relevant authorities, such as the Islamic development department and the National Fatwa Council, to review the remark and issue an official stance to prevent similar incidents in the future. Zahid made the original remarks while addressing delegates at the Sri Gading Umno division meeting in Batu Pahat over the weekend. Defending party loyalty, he said Umno had gone through immense trials in the past, including the seizure of party assets and the freezing of its accounts. 'I and many other leaders were tested. If an angel had been made Umno president at that time, perhaps even he would have fled in the night,' he had said.

Zahid: Mara will adopt girl who lost family in Sg Korok tragedy

JITRA: Majlis Amanah Rakyat (Mara) will adopt the 12-year-old girl who lost her family in the Sungai Korok tragedy and support her until she reaches university. Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said the government, through Mara, would ensure Putri Qisya Nur Izzat Mohamad Azim Izat's welfare. Her parents and four siblings died after the family car plunged into Sungai Korok. Their bodies were retrieved yesterday. "I advised her to be a pious girl as the prayers of a pious child for their parents are always accepted. "I encouraged her to recite Surah Al-Fatihah and Yasin often for her late parents and siblings," Zahid said after visiting the girl and her extended family in Jerlun today. He said arrangements have been made for the girl to attend Maktab Rendah Sains Mara (MRSM) next year. "I told her to study hard and get good grades. Insya-Allah, MRSM is waiting. "She has agreed and so have her grandparents, Insya-Allah. We will make every effort to ensure she gets the opportunities and support she needs." He said Mara would ensure her welfare and academic future are taken care of. On safety concerns at the site of the tragedy, Zahid, who is rural and regional development minister, said his ministry would consider installing guardrails and streetlights along the dark stretch of road there and nearby. He said he would bring the matter to the attention of relevant parties to expedite action. Six members of a family were reported missing on Saturday. The bodies of Mohamad Azim Izat Ishak, 32, his wife Nurul Hidayah Khadijah Razman Efendi, 31, and their four children, Putra Rayyan Nur, 9, Hawa Adriana Nur, 8, Annayla Humaira Nur, 7, and six-month-old Tuah Haydar, were found inside a Proton Iswara that sank in Sungai Korok. Initial investigations suggest the vehicle might have skidded off the road and into the river while the family was on the way home to Jerlun from a relative's house in Taman Seri Aman, Jitra.

Ex-Umno man Isham Jalil acquitted of contempt

Former Umno leader Isham Jalil (left) with his counsel Azhar Harun after the Kuala Lumpur High Court delivered its verdict today. KUALA LUMPUR : The High Court here has acquitted former Umno Supreme Council member Isham Jalil of contempt over remarks on Najib Razak's 1MDB-related cases. Justice K Muniandy said the prosecution failed to prove that Isham's statements, made in late 2023, posed a real risk of interference in the administration of justice. 'The claim that the administration of justice was derailed or sullied by the statements does not hold water,' he said. Muniandy also said the allegation that Isham's statements had scandalised the judiciary appeared untrue. Filed on Dec 28, 2023, the application to cite Isham for contempt concerned statements he allegedly made during an interview titled 'Townhall for Justice: Keadilan Sebenarnya Untuk Siapa' published on Sept 30 through a Facebook account known as Malaya Post. In an affidavit filed in support of the leave application, deputy public prosecutor Mustapha Kunyalam claimed that Isham had commented on Najib's 1MDB and SRC International trials, and on the Federal Court's conduct of the final appeal in the latter case. Isham allegedly accused Justices Collin Lawrence Sequerah and Nazlan Ghazali of bias and said they should have withdrawn from hearing the cases. Sequerah is presiding over Najib's 1MDB trial in the High Court while Nazlan was the judge who convicted the former prime minister in the SRC case. Both Sequerah and Nazlan now sit in the Court of Appeal. Mustapha also said Isham had claimed that the panel of five judges, led by former chief justice Tengku Maimun Tuan Mat, who heard Najib's final appeal from his conviction and sentence in the SRC case, had judged the case unfairly. According to the affidavit, the statements made by Isham could undermine the public's confidence in the judiciary and could be considered as interference with the administration of justice. Muniandy ruled that the attorney-general had not discharged the burden of proof in the case before him, adding that criticism levelled by Isham against the courts' various decisions were within reasonable limits. He said the law of contempt was not designed to protect judges or their dignity but to ensure that the administration of justice was not obstructed. 'As judges, we must stand resilient in the face of adversity and criticism, for the scales of justice must never be swayed by external pressures,' he said. He said that when delivering judgments, judges not only decide cases but also reinforce public trust in the judiciary, proving that even in the most emotionally charged circumstances, the pursuit of truth and application of law can, and must, prevail. 'The most effective way for the judiciary to dispel unwarranted criticism and defend its integrity against scurrilous attacks is through the delivery of judgments that are undeniably fair, just and deeply rooted in the principles of law,' he said. Muniandy said while Article 10 of the Federal Constitution allowed for free speech, the right was not absolute and came with inherent limitations, including contempt of court. 'While freedom of speech is the cornerstone of democracy, its exercise must respect the vital function of the judiciary. However, (the contempt process) should be reserved for where there is real risk of undermining the administration of justice,' he added.
