68 U.S. Bridges Lack Risk Assessment

Yahoo31-03-2025
When the Dali containership struck the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore, the deadly collapse triggered an NTSB investigation into U.S. infrastructure. The safety agency wanted to see if other bridges could be susceptible to similar strikes.
About two weeks ago, the NTSB identified 68 bridges across 19 states that should conduct a vulnerability assessment.

After the Key Bridge collapsed, an NTSB investigation found that it was nearly 30 times above the acceptable risk threshold for critical or essential bridges, a metric set by the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO).
The 68 bridges NTSB flagged were designed before AASHTO guidance was established and don't have a current vulnerability assessment.
The NTSB isn't saying that these bridges will collapse; it merely wants the 30 bridge owners to evaluate whether they are above acceptable risk levels. If the risk level is high, the NTSB asks the owners to develop and implement a comprehensive risk reduction plan.
AASHTO created the vulnerability assessment calculation for new bridges in 1991 in response to the Sunshine Skyway Bridge collapse in Florida.
Since 1994, the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) has required new bridges to minimize the risk of a catastrophic bridge collapse from a vessel collision.
The NTSB found that if the Maryland Transportation Authority had conducted a vulnerability assessment on the Key Bridge, it could have been proactive in reducing the bridge's risk of collapse.
Neither the FHWA nor AASHTO can require a bridge owner to complete a vulnerability assessment for a bridge designed before the release of the 1991 guidelines.
The list (included below) has some pretty notable structures, including the Golden Gate Bridge in California, built in 1937; the Sunshine Skyway Bridge in Florida, built in 1986; the Talmadge Bridge in Georgia, built in 1991; Leo Frigo Bridge in Green Bay, Wisconsin built 1979 and Chicago's Skyway bridge built in 1958.
New York topped the list with 13 bridges, including the Brooklyn Bridge, which was built in 1883, as well as the Manhattan and Williamsburg bridges. Louisiana had the second most bridges with eight and seven bridges were flagged in California.
The NTSB has recommended that an interdisciplinary team of experts be established to provide guidance and help bridge owners evaluate and reduce risk, which could mean infrastructure improvements or operational changes.

Canada would suffer the most economic damage under Trump's tariffs, new Yale report shows

The US's second-largest trading partner may be bearing the brunt of President Donald Trump's tariffs. A new report by The Budget Lab at Yale University shows that the Trump administration's tariffs would shrink Canada 's long-run economy by 2.1% after taking inflation into account, more than the impacts on other countries in the world. This figure is up from the previous estimate of a 1.9% long-term damage to Canada, and doesn't take into account Trump's threats to impose a 35% tariff on Canada from August 1. On Truth Social, Trump published a letter to Canada on Thursday, accusing the northern neighbour of having "financially retaliated against the United States." Though Canada is not subjected to the 10% base tariffs, the northern neighbour already faces a 10% tariff on potash and energy, a 50% tariff on steel and aluminum, and a 25% tariff on automobiles. Canada also exports around three-quarters of its goods to the US. The US-Canada relationship has also suffered due to the tariffs and Trump's repeated comments that Canada should become the 51st state of America. Many Canadian retailers and consumers are turning to locally sources goods over US imports. In response to Trump, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney wrote on X that he remains willing to collaborate with Washington, DC, and said he is "building Canada strong." "The federal government, provinces, and territories are making significant progress in building one Canadian economy," wrote Carney. "We are poised to build a series of major new projects in the national interest. We are strengthening our trading partnerships throughout the world." After Canada, the Bugest Lab report shows that the US ranks second in terms of estimated GDP loss due to Trump's tariffs. While China's economy is expected to contract by 0.2%, the US economy is expected to be 0.4% smaller in the long run and 0.8% smaller in 2025 alone. US households, the report says, will also see an income loss of $2,500 due to tariffs. Clothes and footwear would become disproportionately more expensive by as much as 39% in the short run, and prices are expected to stay up in the future.

The steep rate is a step above Canada's reciprocal tariff of 26% announced on April 2. 'If Canada works with me to stop the flow of Fentanyl, we will, perhaps, consider an adjustment to this letter,' said Trump. In an X post, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said that Canada would continue its efforts to stop the spread of the deadly drug. Additionally, Trump is considering imposing a blanket tariff of 15% or 20%, up from 10%. He reiterated his belief that the tariffs won't increase inflation and cited all-time highs in the stock market. U.S. yearly tariff revenue has surpassed $100 billion for the first time, with three months still remaining in fiscal year 2025. Tariff revenue was $27.2 billion in June, bringing the yearly total to $113 billion. The monthly average tariff revenue in 2024 was $7.2 billion. On top of that, the U.S. recorded a $27 billion surplus in June compared to $71 billion deficit a year ago. Meanwhile, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio met with Chinese Minister of Foreign Affairs Wang Yi on Friday at the 58th ASEAN Foreign Ministers' Meeting in Kuala Lumpur. Both parties concluded that the meeting was 'positive, pragmatic, and constructive.' They also agreed that a meeting between Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping would be beneficial for both countries. The U.S. and India are also making trade progress with the U.S. considering a less than 20% baseline tariff on imported Indian goods, according to Bloomberg. India doesn't expect to receive a tariff notification letter and believes that the U.S. will announce the deal, said people close to the situation. The timing of the announcement remains unclear. Finally, Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA) Director Bill Pulte issued an eye-catching statement near the market close. 'I'm encouraged by reports that Jerome Powell is considering resigning. I think this will be the right decision for America, and the economy will boom,' said Pulte. However, there are no confirmed reports that Powell intends to resign.

Elon Musk's xAI Plans to Raise Money at a $200B Valuation

Elon Musk 's artificial intelligence company, xAI, is preparing to raise more funds from investors in a new deal that could value the startup between $170 billion and $200 billion, according to the Financial Times. This is more than ten times its valuation from early last year and would be xAI's third major funding move in less than two months, following a $10 billion raise in July through loans and cash, and a $300 million secondary stock sale in June. For starters, xAI launched the fourth version of its Grok chatbot, which operates on Musk's social media platform, X. However, the rollout faced backlash after Grok posted comments praising Adolf Hitler and spreading antisemitic content. Unsurprisingly, xAI responded by promising to remove hate speech. Furthermore, X CEO Linda Yaccarino stepped down from her role in a move that took many by surprise. Nevertheless, Musk's private companies continue to rise sharply in value even as Tesla shares have dropped nearly 20% this year. Indeed, xAI acquired X in an all-stock deal in March that valued the combined firm at $113 billion, and this could grow to $245 billion if the latest fundraising succeeds. At the same time, SpaceX is planning to sell about $1 billion in shares at a $400 billion valuation, which would be a jump from the recent valuation of $350 billion. Interestingly, insiders suggest that Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund is expected to play a major role in the upcoming deal. What Is the Prediction for Tesla Stock? When it comes to Elon Musk's companies, most of them are privately held. However, retail investors can invest in his most popular company, Tesla (TSLA). Turning to Wall Street, analysts have a Hold consensus rating on TSLA stock based on 14 Buys, 13 Holds, and nine Sells assigned in the past three months, as indicated by the graphic below. Furthermore, the average TSLA price target of $295.80 per share implies 5.7% downside risk.
