Ahmedabad Crash: Transport Committee May Discuss Air Safety Concerns, Likely To Summon Airlines
Representatives from airlines, Airports Authority of India & CISF may be asked to depose before the panel, apart from companies running helicopter services in religious locations
Members of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Transport, Tourism and Culture are likely to raise broader concerns surrounding air safety in light of the Ahmedabad flight crash and the helicopter crash in Uttarakhand's Kedarnath.
Several members have already urged committee chairperson Sanjay Jha to prioritise the issue. It is learnt that the Jha-led panel will formally decide to take up this matter of urgent public concern and seek that the Ministry of Civil Aviation officials, BCAS and the DGCA appear before it.
The committee is aware of the ongoing investigation in the Air India crash case and therefore, would not think it wise to single out this case, the sources said.
Representatives from various airlines, Airports Authority of India (AAI), and CISF are expected to be asked to depose before the panel. The companies running helicopter services in various religious locations like Mata Vaishnav Devi and Kedarnath are also expected to be present before the committee.
'The recent crash has been very disturbing and with all kind of theories floating, we want to understand what the SOP really is in such cases and what are technicalities and technical challenges, role of the pilot etc," a source said.
The committee also has BJP MP Rajiv Pratap Rudy as its member. Rudy has been the former civil aviation minister in the Vajpayee government and is also a commercial pilot.
Even after the Ahmedabad crash, a series of technical snags was reported onboard the Boeing Dreamliner aircraft over the last 48 hours, leading to several questions about the safety of passengers.
Meanwhile, after the Kedarnath crash on Sunday, operations of Aryan Aviation for the Char Dham Yatra were suspended with immediate effect. Two helicopters belonging to M/s TransBharat Aviation—VT-TBC (PIC: Capt. Yogesh Grewal, CPL(H)-1453) and VT-TBF (PIC: Capt. Jitender Harjai, CPL(H)-1046)—were found to have been airborne under similar unsuitable weather conditions. Accordingly, the licenses of both pilots have been suspended for six months.
A high-level enquiry has also been ordered both in the case of the Ahmedabad crash and the Uttarakhand crash. Apart from this, the Centre also set up a high-level committee led by the home secretary on cases like the Ahmedabad crash.

The Bengaluru bench was deciding the petition of Vikash Kumar, who challenged his suspension by the Siddaramaiah-led Congress government in the wake of the stampede in Bengaluru that claimed at least 11 lives. New Delhi: Remarking that police personnel are also human beings, and neither god nor magicians who can ensure crowd control measures for lakhs of people at short notice, the Central Administrative Tribunal (CAT) Tuesday quashed Karnataka government's order suspending IPS officer Vikash Kumar Vikash for alleged dereliction of duty in connection with a stampede outside the Chinnaswamy Stadium on 4 June. A day after the incident, Karnataka government suspended senior IPS officers from the city, including then-police commissioner B. Dayananda and Vikash Kumar, who was the regional additional commissioner of police. Additionally, the government suspended Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Shekhar H. Tekkannavar, ACP (Cubbon Park) C. Balakrishna, and Inspector A.K. Girish, who was posted at Cubbon Park police station. 'In the aforesaid all circumstances, in view of this Tribunal the order Annexure – A3 has been passed in a mechanical manner and the order is not based upon the convincing materials. The Police officers have been suspended without any sufficient material or grounds. Hence, the aforesaid order is liable to be quashed,' the Bengaluru bench of CAT ordered Tuesday. Although only Vikash Kumar had challenged the suspension, CAT expressed that it expects the government to revoke suspension of all officers suspended in this matter. Before the tribunal, they argued that the officer was neither at fault because there was not enough time to prepare for such a huge event, nor did the state government issue any show cause notice to hear his perspective. Additionally, they argued that the state government had not conducted any primary inquiry and magisterial inquiry set up by the government had yet to submit its report on lapses that may have led to the stampede. On the other hand, the Karnataka government submitted to the tribunal that the suspended officers, prima facie, failed to maintain law and order, and that suspension was not a punishment. On its part, the tribunal rebuked the reason given in the suspension order by the government that these senior officials failed to provide a written rejection to the letter from RCB's CEO on 3 June about their plans to hold a victory parade. 'After mentioning the name of five officers, it is mentioned in the order that the CEO of RCB had intimated Commissioner of Police, Bengaluru City on 03.06.2025 about holding the victory parade and celebration on 04.06.2025. The aforesaid portion of the order is not correct because the respondents (state) did not submit the copy of any intimation submitted to the Commissioner of Police, Bengaluru on 03.06.2025,' the tribunal noted. Instead, the tribunal said it was the Karnataka State Cricket Association that informed the Cubbon Park police inspector on 3 June that if RCB went on to win the tournament, their event management firm, DNA Entertainment Networks Private Limited, would plan a victory parade around the M Chinnaswamy stadium. 'It appears from the aforesaid letter that the letter was submitted to the inspector of police, Cubbon Park police station, Bengaluru. Any copy of this letter was not given to any superior officer. It is not shown that the copy was also given to the present applicant Shri Vikash Kumar Vikash or other officers, Shri B. Dayananda or Shri Shekhar H. Tekkannavar,' the tribunal noted. It further noted that permission for assemblies and processions should be obtained from an officer of the rank of additional commissioner of police at least a week before the scheduled event. Hence, the tribunal documented that the answer to the question about whether the police had 'sufficient time' to make sufficient arrangements is 'negative'. The tribunal noted that RCB shared two social media posts early in the morning on 4 June, inviting its fans to the victory parade, but only the third post, at 3.14 PM, mentioned the availability of limited passes. 'As a result of aforesaid media post of RCB, the crowd gathered near the stadium about three lakhs and around the Chinnaswamy Stadium a significant number of people gathered upon the roads and other places in an approximately 14 km area. The capacity of the stadium was 35,000 while around 3 lakh people gathered around the stadium. At that moment it was not possible for the Police to make the arrangements,' the tribunal noted. It also said RCB was responsible for the huge gathering of fans, and the police were unable to make proper arrangements to manage such a huge gathering. Police personnel were already deployed on the streets of Bengaluru as fans celebrated throughout the intervening night of 3 and 4 June. The police personnel were also deployed at the Vidhan Soudha, where another event to felicitate the players was organised that morning, said the tribunal. Adding, 'It cannot expected from the police that within a short time of about 12 hours the police will make all arrangements required in the Police Act or in the other rules, etc.' The order went on to add, 'Police personnel are also human beings. They are neither 'God' (Bhagwan) nor magician and also not having the magic powers like 'Alladdin (sic) ka chirag (lamp)' which was able to fulfil any wish only by rubbing a finger. To control the aforesaid type of gathering and for making the proper arrangements sufficient time should be given to the police. But neither the information was given to the police for making the arrangements nor the permission was applied or granted by the police.' 'The KSCA submitted a letter which also did not contain any request for granting the permission or for making the arrangements. The letter shows only the information regarding the intention. Therefore, it was not expected from the police that upon the basis of letter submitted before the station in charge of one police station, the police will make all arrangements all of a sudden,' it said. Congress alleges Centre & CPIM ‘compromise' as RA Chandrasekhar takes charge as Kerala DGP
As Chandrasekhar assumed office, opposition Congress alleged his appointment was a 'political compromise' between the ruling CPI(M) in the state and the BJP-led Centre. Chandrasekhar, a 1991-batch IPS officer of the Kerala cadre and a native of Andhra Pradesh, was appointed Kerala's police chief Monday, succeeding Shaik Darvesh Saheb, who retired the same day. Chandrasekhar was on central deputation as special director in the Intelligence Bureau and took charge as DGP in Thiruvananthapuram Tuesday. Thiruvananthapuram: The appointment of Ravada A. Chandrasekhar as Kerala's new Director General of Police (DGP) has sparked a political controversy in the state, with the opposition Congress raking up the 1994 Koothuparamba police firing case in which five Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) activists were killed. All India Congress Committee (AICC) general secretary and Alappuzha MP K.C. Venugopal alleged that Chandrasekhar was only recently posted in the Prime Minister's security team. Venugopal claimed that another officer, Nitin Agarwal, was also shortlisted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) but was overlooked due to disagreements with the central government. 'The serious matter here is that the new DGP is a political compromise between the central government and the CPI(M). There's no doubt about it,' he said. Chandrasekhar was posted as assistant superintendent of police (ASP) in Thalassery, Kannur, just two days before the Koothuparamba incident in November 1994. On the day of the incident, activists of DYFI, CPI(M) youth wing, were protesting against the then UDF government's education policy, which allowed government quota seats to be given to management. They blocked the car of then minister M.V. Raghavan who had arrived to inaugurate a cooperative bank's evening branch in Koothuparamba. Police opened fire on the protestors, killing five DYFI members and injuring several others, including a youth named Pushpan, who remained bedridden until his death in 2024. The incident remains etched in public memory and is often referenced by CPI(M) leaders and on campuses across Kerala as a symbol of police brutality against party activists. Pushpan, often referred to as a 'living martyr', continues to be commemorated in party songs. A judicial inquiry in 1997 found the police action unwarranted. Subsequently, Chandrasekhar, then deputy SP Abdul Hakkim Bathery, then sub-divisional magistrate T.T. Antony, and others were charged with murder and criminal conspiracy by a Kannur court. In 2012, the Kerala High Court quashed the charges against all the accused, citing the absence of government sanction for prosecution. Venugopal said he has no personal issue against Chandrasekhar, but the CPI(M) should clarify whether its earlier stand against the officer was wrong. 'I have no personal disrespect for the officer. He might have acted as part of his responsibility, but the allegations made by the CPM back then are all in the public domain. The CPM convinced their cadres, the martyred cadres, and the families of the martyrs about many things. If you look closely, there's a great mystery as to why they're changing their stance now.' However, CPI(M) state secretary M.V. Govindan defended Chandrasekhar, saying the officer was new to the district at the time of the incident. 'He was appointed there just two days before the incident. He's from Andhra Pradesh and didn't even know the geography or politics of Thalassery or Kannur. We all know the firing and lathi-charge were led by T.T. Antony and Abdul Hakkim Bathery. The court itself acquitted all of them. He is not guilty until the court says so,' he said. Union Law Minister Kiran Rijiju made the formal announcement amidst thunderous applause. Addressing the gathering, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said, 'Ravindra Chavan's unwavering commitment and loyalty to the organisation earned him the highest post. He is a karyakarta who thinks and works for the organisation 24×7,' adding 'for the BJP the welfare of Maharashtra is supreme'. On the controversy over the three-language policy, he said, 'We are not one to work under anybody' pressure. We have constituted a committee that will take an appropriate decision. Students' interest will be kept in sight and mind.' 'We have always accorded Marathi highest priority. And made Marathi language mandatory,' Fadnavis reiterated. 'We are not against Hindi language. We take pride in all Indian languages. Unfortunately, our opponents distorted facts for politics,' he said. They will now start shouting how the government is out to divide Mumbai from Maharashtra. But by now, people have seen the Opposition's gimmicks,' he added. Attacking opposition parties, Fadnavis said, 'During their tenure, sons of the soil were forced to relocate outside Mumbai. Whereas, after the BJP-led government came to power, we provided them homes within Mumbai. We have undertaken projects to transform the face of Mumbai and provide much needed relief to Mumbaikars.' Addressing the gathering, Rijiju said, 'In the 2024 Lok Sabha polls, the opposition misled people on the threat to the Constitution. But in the Assembly polls, the Maharashtra BJP came back with absolute mandate. The Congress, which talks of the Constitution, is the one which ensured Dr B R Ambedkar defeat in the Lok Sabha polls from Maharashtra.' Chavan expressed his gratitude to the party for the responsibility bestowed on him. 'We will devote our entire energy for organisational expansion keeping the 2029 Assembly polls in sight. Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari said, 'Fadnavis and Chavan should work together to make Maharashtra leader in every sector.'
