Billy Connolly scarecrow destroyed after being stolen

Glasgow Timesa day ago
The life-sized figure, created by Louise Haggerty for the Drymen Gala Day scarecrow competition, was snatched from her garden on Saturday night.
The property is just a few hundred yards from where the legendary comedian once lived in the late 1970s.

(Image: Louise Haggerty) This year's competition had a Hawaiian theme, prompting Louise and her partner John to recreate Connolly with his signature 'banana feet' — a nod to his famous stage persona.
She said: 'Every year for the Gala Day, there's a scarecrow competition and this time we decided to make Billy with his banana feet.
'It brought so much joy and pleasure to the community. You've no idea how many people stopped to take pictures — some even climbed our fence to pose beside him.'
The scarecrow quickly became a local talking point, drawing admiration from passers-by throughout the village.
But that admiration turned to outrage when the figure was stolen in the dead of night.
She made a public appeal on Facebook following the theft and urging for Billy to be returned. The appeal read: "Well, it was only a scarecrow, but we were amazed at the amount of attention it was getting, which gave us pleasure, given the amount of time and effort to create 'Billy'.
"However, about 10 minutes ago, some youngsters in a car pulled up and stole him.
"Just in case anyone was wondering why he had disappeared from our fence across from the Winnock car park!"

Though initially angry, Louise said she began to see the funny side — until the scarecrow's fate was discovered.
Although the Gala Day had taken place the previous month, Louise had planned to keep Billy on display until the end of August due to the overwhelming interest.
But the situation worsened just hours after she made a public appeal. Billy was found later that night, brutally destroyed and discarded.
Louise revealed: 'He was found less than a mile away, completely dismembered.
'His wooden banjo had been flung about 100 yards from the body. His leggings were ripped, and his torso was torn in half.
'I can't help but wonder what the point was. It almost felt like a vendetta, but I think it was probably just some spur-of-the-moment stupidity.'
The damage has left Louise feeling genuinely hurt.
She shared: 'I just can't understand the mentality behind it. What kind of fun is that? It's just plain stupidity.'

Locals were quick to leap to Louise's defence on social media, expressing their anger and disappointment in the vandalism.
One commenter wrote: 'Some people just make me sick. What benefit is there in stealing something like this?'
Another added: 'Unbelievable… It was brilliant seeing him standing there.'
A third said: 'That's ridiculous. Such a great scarecrow!'

Kneecap slam John Swinney during Glasgow gig after being axed by TRNSMT

Kneecap has bashed John Swinney during their Glasgow O2 Academy gig where police and sniffer dogs scoured their dressing room. Kneecap has hit out at First Minister John Swinney during their sold-out performance in Glasgow after being axed from TRNSMT. Kneecap, formed of Mo Chara - who was recently charged with a terror offence - Móglaí Bap, and DJ Próvaí, were originally billed to headline the King Tut's stage on Friday at the TRNSMT Festival, however they were dropped from the lineup at the end of May over safety concerns by Police Scotland. ‌ Instead, they headlined the city's O2 Academy tonight - with the show selling out in 80 seconds. ‌ In May, Scotland's First Minister John Swinney called for TRNSMT to cancel the performance on July 11, saying that 'organisers of TRNSMT have got to consider that issue.' Swinney also said: "It would be unacceptable to perform on such a stage given the fact their comments are so beyond the pale." It only took Kneecap 10 minutes into the show to address the issue, reports the BBC. Liam Óg Ó hAnnaidh, who goes by the stage name Mo Chara, asked the crowd "What's your first minister's name?" before swearing and saying: "They stopped us playing TRNSMT but they can't stop us playing Glasgow." DF Concerts took the decision to remove the rappers from the TRNSMT line-up after police raised safety concerns. ‌ Kneecap noted that they did not believe the TRNSMT cancellation was the festival's fault, before leading a chant against Prime Minister Keir Starmer, after he called for the band to be dropped from Glastonbury. Fans came to the gig daunting Celtic tops and waving the Irish Tricolour. Mr Ó hAnnaidh later criticised Israel but noted he meant "the government, not the people." ‌ Police and sniffer dogs have also been caught scouring Kneecap's dressing room before the Irish rap trio's sold-out Glasgow gig. Prior to the gig, officers and sniffer dogs were recorded and posted on Kneecap's Instagram story searching their dressing room. The caption of the video said: "Your sniffer dogs are..." ‌ The band arrived at the venue amidst a sea of Palestine flags from Scottish Palestine Solidarity Campaigners. Pictures showed Naoise Ó Cairealláin, also known as Móglaí Bap, entering the building wearing a retro-remake version of Celtic's iconic 1996 bumblebee shirt. While being ushered into the venue, Naoise Ó Cairealláin could be seen carrying a leaflet calling for the charges against his bandmate to be dropped and for Prime Minister Keir Starmer to be arrested. ‌ Mo Chara was charged with brandishing a flag backing banned militant group Hezbollah at a gig in November 2024. He appeared in Westminster Magistrates' Court last month as a result and was released on an unconditional bail. The charge related to an incident after the band's O2 Forum show in Kentish Town, London. However, the band has branded the case against the musician as a "witch hunt". ‌ Police also said they are investigating Kneecap's Sunday performance at Glastonbury, after their set was filled with expletives and calls to "free Palestine" and "f*** Keir Starmer". However, the band pointed out that they did not call for a riot to take place. Kneecap previously took legal action against the then UK Conservative government after they blocked them from receiving a £15,000 funding award to support UK-registered artists in global markets. ‌ However, a court hearing sided with the group and awarded them £14,250. There are three other artists - Billie Eilish, Kendrick Lamar and SZA - who are also set to perform at various locations across Glasgow tonight, and Police Scotland intend to keep everyone safe throughout all three gigs, including Kneecap's performance. Superintendent Paul Douglas stated: "We are aware of a number of events and concerts due to take place in the Greater Glasgow area in the week beginning Monday, 7 July, 2025." 'A proportionate and considered policing plan is in place within the city and we are working with a number of stakeholders to ensure the safety of all those attending these events and where possible minimise disruption to the people of Glasgow," he continued. THIS is the moment police and sniffer dogs scour Kneecap's dressing room ahead of the band's sold-out Glasgow gig. It follows a row over an investigation by counter-terror police into rapper Mo Chara, who is accused of terrorism offences related to a Hezbollah flag he allegedly held up on stage. They apologised to fans following the TRNSMT decision, and in a bid to "try to make up for it", the band decided to put on a show at the O2 Academy. And ahead of their show, police and sniffer dogs were scouring their dressing room. A video which was shared on the band's Instagram shows an officer leading a dog around the room while members sit on some sofas. Another snap on the group's Facebook shows a van with a 'search dogs' sticker on the side. Billie Eilish and Kendrick Lamar are also performing in the city today, with Police Scotland "aiming to minimise disruption". Cops also stated that a "proportionate and considered policing plan" is currently in place during the gigs. Superintendent Paul Douglas said: "We are aware of a number of events and concerts due to take place in the Greater Glasgow area in the week beginning Monday July 7 2025. "A proportionate and considered policing plan is in place within the city and we are working with a number of stakeholders to ensure the safety of all those attending these events and where possible minimise disruption to the people of Glasgow." Crowds gather as Kneecap play Glasgow gig after TRNSMT axe Pictures from the venue earlier showed the group arriving and waving to fans, with member Móglaí Bap wearing a classic Celtic Bumblee away shirt. Meanwhile, Mo Chara greeted fans with a peace sign as security led the pair into the venue. Police were also standing by outside the O2 with pro-Palestine demonstrators gathered nearby. Door staff were ordering fans to remove tricolour-style balaclavas, like that worn by Kneecap member DJ Próvaí.
