Volvo celebrates 30 years of the S40, the compact sedan that redefined its image

Volvo is marking 30 years since the launch of the acclaimed S40, which was its first proper attempt at building a compact executive sedan.

Debuting at the 1995 Frankfurt Motor Show, the S40 took Volvo's trademark focus on safety and comfort and packed it into a smaller, more affordable package. At the time, it was a big move for Volvo since the brand was mostly known for big family wagons like the 850, but the S40 was aimed at a different market of people who wanted a more manageable size without giving up on quality. Under the bonnet, it offered a mix of petrol and diesel engines, but the standout was the T4. That version came with a 2l turbocharged four-cylinder making 147kW and 300N.m. It wasn't just quick for a Volvo, it was quick, full stop. Zero to 100km/h in 7.3 seconds put it ahead of many hot hatches of the era. It proved itself in motorsport, particularly in the BTCC, where Richard Rydell took the title in 1998. It also competed in touring car series in Australia, Sweden and Norway.

Styling came from the late Peter Horbury, who gave the S40 a clean, no-nonsense look that still holds up surprisingly well today. It was unmistakably a Volvo but had a more refined, modern edge compared with the boxy shapes of the past. But what really made the S40 stand out was its safety. It was the first car to earn a four-star rating from Euro NCAP, at a time when most rivals managed two or three. Volvo loaded it with side-impact protection, multiple airbags and a reinforced structure. That reputation carried through to the second-gen model, which scored a full five stars in 2004.
The S40 was eventually dropped in 2012, but Volvo claim its spirit lives on in models like the XC40 and the electric C40 Recharge. As Felipe Yagi, Volvo Car South Africa's marketing boss, puts it: 'The S40 brought a new dimension to the Volvo line-up… Today, the 40 badge continues to represent that same balance of practicality and refinement, now reimagined for a new generation.

XC60 takes the lead in Volvo's sales history

The Volvo XC60 has officially taken the crown as the best-selling model in the company's history, passing the long-reigning Volvo 240 with more than 2.7 million units sold since 2008. Looking for a new or used Volvo? Find it here with CARmag! That milestone marks a major shift in how customers define a family car. Where the boxy 240 estates once ruled the suburbs, the XC60, a mid-size SUV introduced at a time when Volvo was leaning into premium territory, now carries the torch. Since its launch, the XC60 has appealed to a wide range of drivers, thanks to its safety credentials and a design that strikes a balance between practicality and Scandinavian restraint. Originally produced in Europe, the SUV later became the first Volvo model also built in China, a move that supported its international success. The current-generation XC60 added plug-in hybrid options to the range, which helped it become the best-selling PHEV in Europe last year. Now, with the 2026 model year update, Volvo has introduced a series of changes aimed at keeping it competitive. These include a cleaner exterior design, a more comfortable cabin, and a faster, more responsive infotainment system. Related: Volvo's S40 Turns 30 Years Old in 2025 Reflecting on the milestone, Susanne Hägglund, the head of Global Offer at Volvo Cars, said: 'Growing up in Sweden in the 1980s, the Volvo 240 was the iconic family car, you could spot one in almost every driveway. Today the XC60 has taken over that position, becoming our all-time top-seller, which in itself is the ultimate proof point of a successful car.' The popularity of the XC60 also reflects how much the family car has evolved. Buyers who grew up in the back seats of Volvo 240s are now choosing the XC60 for their kids, favouring SUVs over estates. While the 240 was known for introducing crash safety innovations in the 1970s, like reinforced passenger compartments and side-impact protection, the XC60 has built on that legacy with systems like City Safety (automatic braking at speeds up to 30km/h) and Oncoming Lane Mitigation, which can steer the car away from a head-on collision. Volvo hasn't reinvented the XC60 with this update, but that's likely the point. After all, you don't mess with a formula that's already made history. Volkswagen unveils most powerful Golf GTI yet in 50th anniversary tribute

Volkswagen is marking 50 years of the Golf GTI with a special edition that also happens to be the most powerful production GTI yet. The new Golf GTI Edition 50 was revealed during the Nürburgring 24 Hours and is set to go into production at the end of 2025, with deliveries expected in early 2026. Looking for a new or used Volkswagen? Find it here with CARmag! Power comes from a 2l turbocharged four-cylinder engine producing 239kW and 420N.m. That's a 44kW jump over the standard GTI, and it edges past the Golf GTI Clubsport, which makes 221kW. Power is sent through a seven-speed DSG transmission. Chassis changes include a 15mm drop compared with the standard GTI, with further tweaks available through an optional Performance Package. That setup lowers the car by an additional 5mm, stiffens the springs, and adds revised suspension mounts. Volkswagen says the adjustments improve turn-in and stability under load. Sebastian Willmann, head of chassis development at VW, says the Edition 50 builds on lessons from the Golf VII GTI Clubsport. 'We managed to further increase front axle grip while maintaining neutral, agile handling,' he says. Related: Say Hello to Tengo – Volkswagen's Next Kariega-Made Model Fitted with the optional package, the car gets 19-inch forged wheels weighing 8kg each, wrapped in Bridgestone Potenza Race semi-slicks. A lightweight Akrapovič titanium exhaust saves another 11kg over the standard system. Volkswagen development driver Benjamin Leuchter drove the Edition 50 around the Nürburgring Nordschleife in 7:46.13, the fastest recorded lap for a production Golf. 'It's the most precise and sporty Volkswagen I've ever driven,' he says. Visual cues include GTI 50 badging on the mirrors and spoiler, a black roof, and a gradient side stripe in Tornado Red, a colour with GTI heritage. Inside, the cabin gets the usual GTI plaid seats with red belts, a GTI 50-branded steering wheel, and green contrast stitching. Five colours will be available: Pure White, Moonstone Grey, Grenadilla Black, Tornado Red, and a model-exclusive Dark Moss Green Metallic. Production will take place in Wolfsburg, where the GTI story began nearly five decades ago. Click here and browse thousands of new and used vehicles here with CARmag!
