Rare 2009 Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren 722S Roadster With Under 1,500 Miles Hits PCarMarket
Read the full story on Modern Car Collector A 2009 Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren 722S Roadster, one of only 150 ever produced and among just 24 delivered to the United States, has surfaced for auction on PCarMarket. Showing just 1,471 miles, this track-focused, open-top supercar represents one of the rarest and most desirable collaborations between Mercedes-Benz and McLaren. Unveiled at the 2007 Frankfurt Motor Show, the 722S Roadster pays tribute to Sir Stirling Moss's 1955 Mille Miglia victory in a Mercedes 300 SLR, famously starting at 7:22 AM, which inspired the '722' designation. This hand-built machine features extensive use of carbon fiber, including a CFRP body, carbon monocoque chassis, and aerodynamic upgrades like a carbon splitter, rear diffuser, and integrated air brake. Finished in model-specific Crystal Antimony Gray Metallic, it retains its Michelin Pilot Sport tires on exclusive 19-inch lightweight forged wheels and has been partially wrapped in clear paint protection film. Inside, the SLR blends motorsport engineering with luxury, featuring black semi-aniline leather and Alcantara, red contrast stitching and seatbelts, and carbon fiber trim. Details like blue McLaren dials, an etched wind deflector, and a 722S badge on the shifter underscore its limited-production exclusivity. Comfort and convenience are not forgotten, with dual-zone climate control and a Bose premium sound system included. Under the hood, the 722S is powered by a 5.5-liter supercharged V8, delivering 641 horsepower and 605 lb-ft of torque through a 5-speed AMG Speedshift R transmission. With a 0-60 mph time of 3.7 seconds and a top speed of 207 mph, it remains one of the fastest roadsters ever built. Regularly maintained at authorized Mercedes-Benz dealerships, this two-owner SLR comes with a clean title and is now offered out of Stony Brook, New York. Rare Porsche 911 Speedster fetches R3.3m at Creative Rides auction
Forty classic and collectible cars went under the hammer this past Saturday at Creative Rides' Main Road showroom in Bryanston, Johannesburg. With more than 200 enthusiasts in attendance and many more tuning in online, the event delivered an exciting atmosphere and some standout results. Top billing went to a 1989 Porsche 911 Speedster, which fetched R3.3m under the gavel of veteran auctioneer Joff van Reenen. Built for just one year, the 911 Speedster was revealed at the 1989 Frankfurt Motor Show and drew inspiration from the original 1955 Porsche 356 Speedster. Only 2,104 were made and the example sold on Saturday is one of just 139 units built in right-hand drive, making it more of a rarity. German engineering continued to lead the day's big sales. A 2017 BMW M4 GTS (F82) hammered for R1.8m, followed by a 2021 BMW M2 CS, which achieved R1.7m. But it wasn't all Teutonic muscle. One of the auction's surprise results came from the US: a 1969 Dodge Charger 440 RT, packing an 8.5 l Chrysler Hemi V8 and a list of mechanical upgrades, roared its way to R2m. Image: Supplied South African classics also made a showing. A well-preserved 1972 Ford Fairmont GT sold for R900,000, while a matching-numbers Ford Capri Perana V8 went for R700,000. One of the more curious entries was a South Africa-only Volkswagen Golf Mk I GT LTD, number 003 of just 1,000 made. With only 29km on the clock, it reached R550,000 under the hammer but didn't meet its reserve.

Volvo celebrates 30 years of the S40, the compact sedan that redefined its image
Volvo is marking 30 years since the launch of the acclaimed S40, which was its first proper attempt at building a compact executive sedan. Looking for a new or used Volvo? Find it here with CARmag! Debuting at the 1995 Frankfurt Motor Show, the S40 took Volvo's trademark focus on safety and comfort and packed it into a smaller, more affordable package. At the time, it was a big move for Volvo since the brand was mostly known for big family wagons like the 850, but the S40 was aimed at a different market of people who wanted a more manageable size without giving up on quality. Under the bonnet, it offered a mix of petrol and diesel engines, but the standout was the T4. That version came with a 2l turbocharged four-cylinder making 147kW and 300N.m. It wasn't just quick for a Volvo, it was quick, full stop. Zero to 100km/h in 7.3 seconds put it ahead of many hot hatches of the era. It proved itself in motorsport, particularly in the BTCC, where Richard Rydell took the title in 1998. It also competed in touring car series in Australia, Sweden and Norway. Related: Volvo's Electric EX30 Cross Country Confirmed for SA Roads Styling came from the late Peter Horbury, who gave the S40 a clean, no-nonsense look that still holds up surprisingly well today. It was unmistakably a Volvo but had a more refined, modern edge compared with the boxy shapes of the past. But what really made the S40 stand out was its safety. It was the first car to earn a four-star rating from Euro NCAP, at a time when most rivals managed two or three. Volvo loaded it with side-impact protection, multiple airbags and a reinforced structure. That reputation carried through to the second-gen model, which scored a full five stars in 2004. The S40 was eventually dropped in 2012, but Volvo claim its spirit lives on in models like the XC40 and the electric C40 Recharge. As Felipe Yagi, Volvo Car South Africa's marketing boss, puts it: 'The S40 brought a new dimension to the Volvo line-up… Today, the 40 badge continues to represent that same balance of practicality and refinement, now reimagined for a new generation. BMW E1: The unlikely 1991 concept that quietly shaped the future of EVs
Looking at the pictures of this dumpy, rust-coloured city car, you're no doubt wondering how such a creation could find its way onto our Cool Concepts page, but BMW's E1 was more cutting-edge and influential than its pedestrian appearance would suggest. Looking for a new or used vehicle? Find it here with CARmag! Unveiled at the 1991 Frankfurt Motor Show in response to tightening emissions laws coming out of the United States (remember, in the 80s, between 70 and 80% of cars there were V8-engined), the E1 was a product of BMW Technik GmbH: the same engineering division that brought us such novelties as the Z1 and the zany Z18, which placed a Z3 roadster-style body on a high-riding SUV chassis. BMW was all too aware of the limitations of battery technology at the time, especially with regard to operating range and charging, so it chose to develop E1 as an urban mobility solution. Related: All-New Honda Amaze Lands in SA – Pricing and Spec Unlike many concepts, which are little more than an eye-catching shell on a chassis, powered by a golf cart motor, the E1 was built as a fully roadworthy prototype. This meant that in addition to accommodating the practical considerations and high-quality cabin materials typical of BMWs, the E1 also had to conform to the crash-safety standards of the day. To achieve this, the car was not only fitted with dual front airbags, but also utilised an innovative construction comprising an aluminium frame clad with plastic panels that was both tough and lightweight. A rear axle-mounted electric motor fed by sodium-sulphur batteries mounted under the rear seat (another nod to production-viable crash safety) developed a modest 37kW but was good for a top speed of 120km/h and a very respectable range of 200km. Charging was achieved via a standard electrical socket, using a plug stashed in one of the E1's kidney grille panels, and took six hours. Related: Toyota Celebrates 40 Years at Le Mans With Throwback Liveries These features may not seem that significant by current standards, but they were cutting-edge at a time when EVs were little more than an automotive pipe dream. Unfortunately, the E1 was perhaps a little too far ahead of its time in some regards. Deficiencies in the cooling systems needed for the sodium-sulphur batteries, which had the double-threat disadvantages of high optimal operating temperature and highly combustible innards, were revealed when the original prototype caught fire while charging, destroying the car and part of an adjacent building. Consequently, BMW utilised more stable sodium-nickel chloride batteries for its successor, the 1993 Z15 concept. The E1 may have looked bizarre and been limited by the battery technology of the time (not to mention sadly combustible) but its design and architecture would go on to form the blueprint for BMW's first production-series EV, the i3, as well as casting the die for the growing range of impressive i EV models to come. It last hit the market in 2022 after its Swiss owners decided to offload it after nabbing it in 2019. The listing states: 'With their attention-grabbing design and rarity, these Reventón showstoppers set a template among supercar manufacturers. "This example was delivered to its first owner in Switzerland in July 2010 via Lamborghini Porrentruy. "The Roadster was finished in the model-specific satin shade of Grigio Reventón over similarly stealthy Grey Alcantara trim. "The interior is also notable for the trio of TFT liquid crystal screens that make up the instrument panel and mimic aircraft head-up displays. "Stamps in the service book reflect that the Reventón Roadster returned to the Lamborghini Porrentruy dealership in August 2012, 2,371 kilometres, August 2013, 3,187 kilometres and January 2018, 3,778 kilometres for routine maintenance."
