Upper Hutt At Heart: Local Volunteers And Not-For-Profits Celebrated At Airport Awards
Thirty-three volunteer groups and not-for-profit organisations were the local finalists, recognised across six categories for their countless hours of service to the Upper Hutt community.
Community spirit and local generosity lit up Whirinaki Whare Taonga as Upper Hutt celebrated its Wellington Airport Regional Community Awards finalists on Tuesday evening.
Thirty-three volunteer groups and not-for-profit organisations were the local finalists, recognised across six categories for their countless hours of service to the Upper Hutt community.
The represented initiatives were diverse and wide-reaching. They included scouts, sports clubs, animal welfare advocates, creative arts groups, and social service providers, amongst others.
'The energy and effort of volunteers and community groups make a real difference to locals every day,' said Jane Braun, Upper Hutt City Council's Community Partnerships Manager.
'All of the finalists contribute significantly to the social fabric of our local community.'
Dedication and commitment were not the only qualities in the spotlight at the annual awards. Mike Ryan, Group Manager Community Services at Upper Hutt City Council, commended the finalists for demonstrating innovation and a keen understanding of their community.
'Year on year, the Airport Awards show us how community-led initiatives address and adapt to local needs and service gaps. Such a breadth of delivery models and support structures is inspiring, and a huge asset to Upper Hutt,' he said.
Wellington Airport has hosted the awards in conjunction with the wider region's city councils since 2004.
Matt Clarke, Wellington Airport chief executive, emphasised that the airport is proud to celebrate the outstanding work of community groups in Upper Hutt.
'These groups deserve recognition for the amazing and selfless work they do in the community. Congratulations to all the Upper Hutt finalists and winners, and best of luck for the Regional Community Awards finals later this year,' he said.
Upper Hutt's winners have now progressed to the final stage of the awards, where they will be acknowledged alongside the winners from the other participating councils in the region, and will have the opportunity to become the overall winner in their respective award category.

Huge honour for WHS head girl
Young Queenstowner Manuella Sanches Pedrosa. PHOTO: SUPPLIED Wakatipu High's head girl's been nationally recognised for being a "local leader and climate change trailblazer". Manuella Sanches Pedrosa, 17, has made the 2025 YWCA Y25 list, celebrating 25 wahine and gender-diverse change-makers, aged 15 to 25, "doing incredible things for their people, communities and planet". From 100-plus nominees, she's the second youngest on the list and one of only five South Islanders. Manuella says she was encouraged to "give it a go" by Girls who Grow co-founder Cath van der Meulen, who last year mentored her and three other Wakatipu High students to come up with innovative solutions to agricultural challenges, especially relating to increased droughts caused by climate change. The students won the 'Rising Star' award at October's Spirit of the Wakatipu community awards. A few weeks after applying for the Y25 list, Manuella says "I had completely forgotten about it, so when I received a call from Mary-Lynn Huxford, the organiser at YWCA, I was genuinely surprised". As part of her honour, she was invited to the launch event and three-day wananga (learning retreat) in Auckland last weekend, which she was able to take her mum to. "It was inspiring to be surrounded by trailblazers and change-makers who, like me, are pushing through the same challenges and striving to make a difference." Manuella, who intends studying law next year, says "I want to leave behind a legacy of support, where young people everywhere feel empowered to take bold action and help shape a more sustainable world". "I hope to create spaces where youth are encouraged to lead initiatives, embrace learning and have the confidence to advocate for the issues they care about, all while spreading love and joy." She thanks her teachers, school, mentors, Wakatipu Wild women's ice hockey team and friends "for their constant support and for always encouraging me to aim higher". Wakatipu High principal Oded Nathan says he's "super-pleased" for her. "We've been commenting internally about how special all of our head students are, but that Manuella certainly seems to have resonated with the community." A New Zealand women's under-18 ice hockey rep, she's suiting up for the Wild in Dunedin this weekend for the NZ women's league's finals series — see page 19 for more.

New director for Wellington Airport
Infratil has appointed an Australian property executive, Bob Johnston, to the board of Wellington Airport. He will replace outgoing director Elizabeth Albergoni, who has served on the board since 2023. Johnston is already on the boards of Perth Airport and Australia's largest residential property developer, ASX-listed Stockland. Wellington Airport noted in a statement that Johnston had more than 30 years of international expertise in the property sector, including investment, development, project management and construction. He is currently the chief executive of ASX-listed property group GPT, and was previously the managing director of Frasers Property Australia (formerly the listed property group Australand). He has also held senior management positions with multinational construction and real estate company Lendlease, both in Australia and overseas. Dual-listed infrastructure investor Infratil owns 66% of Wellington Airport. The rest of the shares are owned by Wellington City Council. Infratil appoints four directors to the airport board and Wellington City Council two, including Wellington Mayor Tory Whanau. The latest appointment takes effect immediately.
