BJP leader Baijayant Panda express grief on Puri stampede, says incident
Condoling on the incident, Baijayant Panda said that it is a 'sad thing' as 10 to 15 lakh devotees gather for the Rath Yatra. He mentioned that the incident happened despite taking all the precautions.
'This is a sad thing. 10-15 lakh people gather for Rath Yatra, which is a huge crowd. This has happened after taking all precautions. All steps are being taken. I express my condolences', Baijayant Panda told ANI.
Earlier, the BJP leader shared a post on his official 'X' handle following the Puri stampede. Baijayant Panda expressed his sadness over the incident and prayed for the family members of the victims that they get the 'patience and courage' to bear the pain for their loss.
'Hearing the news of devotees being injured and killed in a stampede near the Puri Shri Gundicha Temple this morning, I am deeply saddened and heartbroken. I pray for the speedy recovery of the injured and extend my condolences to the grieving families. In this time of sorrow, may Lord Shri Jagannath grant them patience and courage', the 'X' post read.
Earlier, Biju Janata Dal chief and former Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on Sunday extended his condolences to the victims of the 'devastating incident' that took place early this morning during the Jagannath Rath Yatra near the Gundicha Temple in Puri. Talking to 'X', Patnaik prayed for the speedy recovery of those injured in the stampede.
Odisha law minister Prithviraj Harichandan earlier today told ANI that three people died and at least six people sustained injuries near the Gundicha Temple during the ongoing Lord Jagannath Rath Yatra in Puri.
Speaking to ANI over the phone, Odisha Minister said, 'It is an unfortunate incident. We are taking note of that. I spoke with the CM this morning. We are taking stringent action. DGP has been sent to the spot. Three people have passed away because of suffocation in the huge gathering. Six to seven people are injured. I am moving to Puri. I am monitoring the situation over the phone. We are trying our best to manage the crowd. Additional police have been deployed. The reasons for the incident are being investigated,' Harichandan said.
'The situation is now under control and the people are having darshan...', he said.
Meanwhile, Odisha DGP YB Khurania has reached the Gudicha Temple to assess the situation. (ANI)

Gurugram: In a move to position Haryana as a global tourism hub, Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini's government has announced plans to establish a Disneyland theme park in Delhi-NCR, specifically in Gurugram. Saini emphasised that the project would generate significant economic, cultural, and social benefits, not only for Haryana but for India as a whole. 'The Disneyland project will capitalise on Gurugram's market potential and connectivity to create a world-class amusement centre,' he said. 'It will create thousands of direct and indirect jobs, develop infrastructure, and transform the surrounding areas.' Gurugram, home to numerous Fortune 500 companies and the upcoming Global City project, was highlighted as the ideal location. The Chief Minister noted that the project would attract international tourists, boost tourism revenue, and establish Haryana as a prominent destination on the global map. Abhay Singh Chautala, national president of the INLD, alleged while talking to ThePrint that the BJP not just opposed the Disneyland move of his father's government in 1989, but the party also opposed Chautala's move to bring casinos in Gurugram in 2000. 'The BJP and the Congress have never believed in the development of the State. Had the INLD government's move not been blocked in 1989, Haryana would have been a tax-free state in the country and would have the capacity to offer loans to other states. The BJP was supporting the INLD government from outside in 1989 as well as in 2000. However, it sided with Congress when it came to these projects. The BJP should now explain to people what has changed in all these years,' Chautala said. He said that had Chautala not worked hard for development of Gurugram from 1999 to 2005, Gurugram wouldn't have been on the international map today. The 1989 plan envisioned a massive amusement park modelled on Florida's Disneyworld, requiring 28,341 acres of land, including 14,000 acres of prime agricultural land in Gurugram (then Gurgaon). The Haryana government, under Chautala, had even gone as far as to notify this vast area of land under the Land Acquisition Act for the amusement park. The idea was to create a major entertainment hub that, along with Gurugram's development, would significantly change the economic landscape of Haryana. The proposal faced massive public opposition. Farmers in Haryana vehemently protested against the acquisition of their agricultural land for the project. While the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) was not the primary force, it was part of the broader opposition, aligning with anti-INLD forces and supporting farmers' interests. Political analyst Yoginder Gupta noted, 'The 1989 protests were localised in Gurugram and NCR but gained traction due to the support of all opposition parties, including the BJP. It was not as widespread as the 1999 protests for free electricity, but it was significant.' When Bhajan Lal became Chief Minister in 1991, he scrapped the project, fulfilling an electoral promise to return the land to farmers. The decision was seen as a victory for the Opposition's collective efforts, though Congress led the charge. Accusations of Hypocrisy and Political Responses The revival of the Disneyland project has sparked criticism from opposition leaders, notably INLD MLA from Rania, Arjun Singh Chautala. Speaking to ThePrint on Thursday, Chautala accused the BJP of hypocrisy. 'The BJP has a habit of opposing projects launched by opponents, only to support them when in power,' he said. 'Had the 1989 project materialised, Haryana would have seen significant development and tourism revenue by now.' In response, a senior BJP leader, speaking anonymously, defended the party's earlier stance. 'Our opposition in 1989 was not against development but against the forced acquisition of farmers' land,' the leader said. 'The BJP stands with farmers, and our current project will ensure development without compromising their interests.' The current Disneyland proposal is significantly smaller in scale, requiring only 500 acres compared to the 28,341 acres proposed in 1989. Humiliated by CM Siddaramaiah, cop now has Karnataka ministers persuading him to take back resignation
As the issue started to escalate into a political controversy, Siddaramaiah and his colleagues made desperate calls to the senior police officer to withdraw his resignation. In his resignation letter, Dharwad additional superintendent of police Narayana.V. Baramani had sought to be relieved from active duties, saying he was unable to continue in his post after being humiliated by the chief minister at the public meeting on 28 April. Bengaluru: A police officer who was 'humiliated' by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah at an event in April is 'now reporting for' routine duties after the senior Congress leader, his Cabinet colleagues and government officials persuaded him to withdraw his resignation. 'I have always been part of a disciplined department. I have conveyed my feelings to my superiors. My senior officers, the chief minister and the home minister have spoken about this matter. I am now reporting for my routine duties,' Baramani said in a video statement Thursday, circulated to the media. He added it was up to the government to decide on the next course of action. People aware of the developments said the officer had tried to resign the same day but the state government persuaded him to reconsider his decision. Though Baramani held off then, sources said he wrote an official resignation letter on 12 June but the state government did not forward it. He wrote another letter just about a week ago. This snowballed into another challenge for Siddaramaiah, already dealing with a strained relation between his government and the police force who have nursed a feeling of being scapegoated after the Chinnaswamy Stadium stampede last month. Five senior police officers, including Bengaluru city police commissioner B. Dayananda, were suspended as the government held them responsible for the deaths of 11 people in the stadium stampede that ensued during a surge of crowd at the stadium to celebrate the Royal Challengers Bengaluru;'s maiden IPL trophy win. The Central Administrative Tribunal (CAT) has quashed the Karnataka government's order suspending IPS officer Vikash Kumar Vikash, one of the suspended officers. The state government challenged the CAT order Wednesday. But some people, purportedly affiliated to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), managed to sneak into the event and raise slogans and wave black flags against Siddaramaiah as he made a speech. In a video of the incident, Siddaramaiah was seen summoning the senior police officer in a singular tone. 'Hey come here…who is the SP (superintendent of police). What are you doing,' Siddaramaiah is heard saying. The Additional SP of the district who rushed towards the CM, leaned forward. Following that, Siddaramaiah gestured in a manner that suggested he intended to slap the official, who withdrew quickly to avoid the contact. In his resignation letter, Baramani said he responded to the CM's call on stage since the senior most officials in the district were not present. 'I was humiliated for a mistake I did not make,' he wrote, adding the insult was played on loop by TV channels. He said his family also broke down and there was a 'deathly silence' at their home when he returned from the event that day. He added his colleagues or anyone from the government did not protest the CM's actions or even attempted to console him, adding to his mental agony. He added this was not just his grievance or those who perform their duties in a uniform 'but of all government employees.' 'Issue public apology' Opposition parties in Karnataka have used the incident to corner Siddaramaiah, already facing a fair share of challenges including the speculation of being replaced later this year, mounting charges of corruption, his legislators calling out administrative lapses in their own government and a growing fund crunch that has crippled development activities among other problems. 'This incident stands as a stark reminder of what happens when sincere, honest, and committed officers are insulted in public instead of being appreciated for their service. We demand that Siddaramaiah set aside his ego, issue a public apology to Narayana Baramani, and urge the officer to reconsider his decision,' Amit Malviya, the BJP's IT cell chief, said in a post. This was not the first instance of Siddaramaiah losing his cool. That the video of the incident was, and is being, played on loop on TV, has not helped the CM either. The BJP's R. Ashoka, the leader of the opposition, said Siddaramaiah raising hand at a public servant was due to his 'arrogance of power, intoxication, haughtiness, the frustration of leading a failed government, or the anxiety of having to relinquish power soon?'. 'Due to your blunders, every day, in one way or another, your government and you are earning a bad name. At least now, abandon this reckless way of life. Let go of the obsession with power, resign, and preserve whatever little dignity remains. Rather than being remembered as a villain in the pages of history at the twilight of your career, stepping down from the chair with honor is better for you and for the state,' Ashoka said. Bengaluru civic body suspends official after CCTV shows lapses in SC survey
The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has suspended a Revenue Collector in the East Zone after CCTV footage revealed serious lapses in the ongoing door-to-door survey of Scheduled Caste (SC) households in Collector for Ward No. 24 (HBR Layout), Peddaraju, was suspended on Wednesday for dereliction of duty as supervisor of the survey in his ward. The BBMP said he was suspended for 'carelessness, irresponsibility, and lack of interest in executing assigned duties.'advertisementAccording to the suspension order issued by the East Zone Commissioner, enumerators under his supervision were seen 'randomly affixing stickers without confirming with household members,' which is a 'clear breach of procedure.' The incident, captured on CCTV on June 27 and widely circulated on social media, prompted disciplinary action.
