Time to hit the road: Karnataka Home Minister Dr G Parameshwara to traffic DCPs
BENGALURU: Traffic DCPs should come out of their office comforts and be on the streets for two hours in the morning and evening, Karnataka Home Minister Dr G Parameshwara has said. 'Specific DCPs have been appointed for the traffic division, but they are not functioning properly. This issue needs more attention,' the minister said at the annual conference of senior police officers in the State Police Headquarters in Bengaluru on Friday.
Dr Parameshwara also said that strict action is not being taken against those spreading hate speech and defamatory content on social media. 'Are you unaware of the dangers this has caused? Should we just remain silent while such incidents occur?' he questioned officials, saying that new laws are being introduced to take action against those spreading hate speech and inciting violence. These laws will empower the police to control such incidents more effectively, he added.
'Karnataka currently ranks 15th in the country in terms of crime rate. We must aim to move to the 20th position — the crime rate must come down. Ganja is easily available to college students. It is not enough to just arrest the peddlers — letting off the consumers in these drug cases is not right. If drug abuse is not completely controlled, we will face serious consequences in the future,' he warned.
'In Bengaluru, bike wheeling has become a growing menace. Should the High Court instruct the police to stop this? Youths perform wheelies at 3 am. If this is not controlled, it will become a serious issue,' he warned.
He also expressed concern over an increase in illegal Bangladeshi immigrants in Karnataka. 'If this is neglected and not brought under control, it will cause major problems. Illegal immigration must be taken seriously,' he said.
'The Communal Violence Control Force has been set up with a good intention. It must be made effective. Police must take keen interest and lead from the front. There must be fear among those inciting communal violence,' he added.

Ukraine's intelligence suggests that Russian entities are blending grain from occupied Ukrainian territories with Russian wheat before export, prompting Ukraine to further investigate the matter. Ukrainian Ambassador to India, Oleksandr Polishchuk, stated that Dhaka has not responded to a confidential diplomatic communication regarding grain shipments. Ukraine will now further investigate, as its intelligence indicates that Russian entities are blending grain from occupied Ukrainian territories with Russian wheat before export. Ukrainian Ambassador Termed It A Crime 'This is a crime,' Polishchuk said in an interview at the Ukrainian embassy in New Delhi. 'We will share our investigation with our EU colleagues, and we will request them to take appropriate measures,' he said. Bangladesh Food Ministry Issued Statement A Bangladeshi food ministry official stated that Bangladesh would have prohibited Russian grain imports had they originated from occupied Ukrainian land. he said that the country does not import stolen wheat. It is to be noted that, amid the ongoing war with Russia, the agriculture sector remains one of the main sources of income for Ukraine, which supplies grain, vegetable oil and oilseeds to foreign markets. In April this year, Ukraine detained a foreign ship and alleged that the vessel was involved in illegal trade. EU Imposes Sanctions On 32 Ships The European Union has sanctioned 342 vessels involved in Russia's 'shadow fleet,' alleging these ships help Russia evade Western sanctions on oil, weapons, and grain exports. Russia maintains that these sanctions are unlawful.

237 foreign nationals deported since 2022: TN in HC
Madurai: The state govt on Friday informed Madras high court that 237 foreign nationals were deported to their countries from 2022 to May 25, 2025. As many as 66 cases were registered against 188 foreign nationals who were found to be overstaying in Tamil Nadu. The court was hearing a public interest litigation filed by K K Ramesh of Madurai who said no steps were taken by govts to deport foreign nationals, particularly from Pakistan, Bangladesh, Myanmar, and the African continent, who were overstaying. Pursuant to the earlier order of the court, the SP, security branch CID, Chennai, N Stephen Jesubatham, on behalf of the director general of police, filed a counter. He said that according to the Bureau of Immigration, ministry of home affairs, 17,770 foreigners were overstaying in Tamil Nadu from 2011 to May 25, 2025. Several of them travelled to other states after landing in Tamil Nadu. Police and the Bureau of Immigration are making efforts to trace them. In the last four years, 14 cases were registered against 31 African nationals for transporting drugs. As many as 65 cases were registered against 280 foreign nationals for other offences since 2022. At present, 151 foreigners have been accommodated in the special camp in Trichy district. The govt has re-notified the Cheyyar special camp in Thiruvannamalai to accommodate all foreign nationals to restrict their movement until disposal of their cases. Following the Pahalgam attack, the under secretary in the home ministry issued orders regarding revocation of visas of Pakistani nationals. In Tamil Nadu, 40 of them were staying as of April 25 under long-term visa. Out of these, 16 were granted long-term visas, and 24 applied for long-term visa extensions and are on valid stay as per the ministry's order. A total of 95 Rohingyas were staying in Tamil Nadu. Bangladeshi nationals who stayed illegally were arrested across the state and lodged in Puzhal central prison. The commissioner of police in cities and SPs in districts, who are Foreigners Registration Officers (FROs), are being instructed regularly to locate, identify, and physically verify overstaying foreigners and regularise their stay or exit India. All FROs in cities/districts have nominated a DSP-level officer as nodal officer for the Foreigners Identification Portal (FIP) to monitor foreigners. If the foreigners are arrested, proposals are initiated by the respective FROs for their deportation. The state govt would issue deportation orders after arranging travel documents for the foreigner (if required) in consultation with the Union external affairs and home ministries. A division bench of Justice S M Subramaniam and Justice A D Maria Clete directed the Centre to file the counter affidavit and adjourned the hearing in the case by three weeks.

Five Nigerian nationals held for illegal stay in Tirupur
Tirupur: The Mangalam police on Saturday arrested five Nigerian nationals for illegal stay in India. The arrested foreign nationals were staying in rental houses in Tirupur city. A police officer identified the arrested five as Vincent, 35, Chikezie Innocent, 43, Chinweubalinus, 52, Andrew Ugochukwu, 25, and Anthony, 41. Preliminary inquiry revealed that they had been staying in Tirupur city since 2021, buying banian clothes and exporting them to their home country. The officer said the five were nabbed based on a specific tip that they were staying at Sulthanpet Neelipirivu on Mangalam Road without any valid documents. "They did not have passports and valid visas to stay in the country." While Bangladeshi nationals illegally staying in Tirupur and working in garment units is common, Nigerian nationals often visit Tirupur to buy apparel and export the same to their hometowns, the officer said. He said some Nigerian nationals were staying at Rayapuram in Tirupur city with proper documents. "We arrested the five after they confessed that they were staying in the country without any valid documents. They were later produced before a judicial magistrate, who remanded them in judicial custody. They will now be taken to the Puzhal Central Prison in Chennai," the officer said.
